irq_domain_create_simple() takes fwnode as the first argument. It can be
extracted from the struct device using dev_fwnode() helper instead of
using of_node with of_fwnode_handle().
So use the dev_fwnode() helper where applicable.

Currently for CONFIG_GPIO_GENERIC=y each struct gpio_chip object
contains the fields relevant only for gpio-mmio users. It's not an
insignificant number either as it's several pointers and integers.
It makes sense to remove these fields from struct gpio_chip into a
dedicated structure but this is not trivial due to how the bgpio_init()
function is implemented.
Add a task for tracking this rework.

It is reported that on Acer Nitro V15 suspend only works properly if the
keyboard backlight is turned off. In looking through the issue Acer Nitro
V15 has a GPIO (#8) specified in _AEI but it has no matching notify device
in _EVT. The values for GPIO #8 change as keyboard backlight is turned on
and off.
This makes it seem that GPIO #8 is actually supposed to be solely for
keyboard backlight. Turning off the interrupt for this GPIO fixes the issue.
Add a quirk that does just that.

and that's how the lot of the code got eliminated. Restore those pieces

On Qualcomm platforms if the board uses GPIO hogs msm_pinmux_request()
calls gpiochip_line_is_valid(). After commit 8015443e24 ("gpio: Hide
valid_mask from direct assignments") gpiochip_line_is_valid() uses
gc->gpiodev, which is NULL when GPIO hog pins are being processed.
Thus after this commit using GPIO hogs causes the following crash. In
order to fix this, verify that gc->gpiodev is not NULL.
Note: it is not possible to reorder calls (e.g. by calling
msm_gpio_init() before pinctrl registration or by splitting
pinctrl_register() into _and_init() and pinctrl_enable() and calling the
latter function after msm_gpio_init()) because GPIO chip registration
would fail with EPROBE_DEFER if pinctrl is not enabled at the time of
registration.

irq_domain_add_*() interfaces are going away as being obsolete now.
Switch to the preferred irq_domain_create_*() ones. Those differ in the
node parameter: They take more generic struct fwnode_handle instead of
struct device_node. Therefore, of_fwnode_handle() is added around the
original parameter.
Note some of the users can likely use dev->fwnode directly instead of
indirect of_fwnode_handle(dev->of_node). But dev->fwnode is not
guaranteed to be set for all, so this has to be investigated on case to
case basis (by people who can actually test with the HW).

The bcm_gpio_irq_chip already has irq hooks configured correctly,
bcm_kona_gpio_irq_mask/bcm_kona_gpio_irq_unmask calls gpiochip_disable_irq/
gpiochip_enable_irq, and bcm_kona_gpio_irq_reqres/irq_release_resources
calls gpiochip_reqres_irq/gpiochip_relres_irq.
So just need to flag it as IRQCHIP_IMMUTABLE.

drivers/pinctrl/pinctrl-at91.c uses struct gpio_chip::base to find out
which bit to set in a register:

This adds a non-obvious dependency on the global numberspace from the
GPIO driver itself, even if all consumers use the descriptor API.

i.MX GPIO numbering has been deterministic since commit 7e6086d9e5
("gpio/mxc: specify gpio base for device tree probe"), a year after
device tree support was first added back in 2011.
Reverting to dynamically allocated GPIO base now would break most
systems making use of the sysfs API. These systems will be eventually
broken by the removal of the sysfs API, but that would result in GPIO
scripts not working instead of essentially toggling at random according
to probe order, which would happen if we unconditionally set base to -1.
Yet, the warning is annoying and has resulted in many rejected attempts
to remove it over the years[1][2][3].
As the i.MX GPIO driver is device tree only, GPIO_SYSFS is the only
consumer of the deterministic GPIO numbering. Let's therefore restrict the
static base and the warning that comes with it to configurations
with CONFIG_GPIO_SYSFS enabled.

Immutable branch between MFD, GPIO and NVMEM due for the v6.16 merge window
If an input changes state during wake-up and is used as an interrupt
source, the IRQ handler reads the volatile input register to clear the
interrupt mask and deassert the IRQ line. However, the IRQ handler is
triggered before access to the register is granted, causing the read
operation to fail.
As a result, the IRQ handler enters a loop, repeatedly printing the
"failed reading register" message, until `pca953x_resume()` is eventually
called, which restores the driver context and enables access to
registers.
Fix by disabling the IRQ line before entering suspend mode, and
re-enabling it after the driver context is restored in `pca953x_resume()`.
An IRQ can be disabled with disable_irq() and still wake the system as
long as the IRQ has wake enabled, so the wake-up functionality is
preserved.

Adds support for level-triggered interrupts in the PCA953x GPIO
expander driver. Previously, the driver only supported edge-triggered
interrupts, which could lead to missed events in scenarios where an
interrupt condition persists until it is explicitly cleared.
By enabling level-triggered interrupts, the driver can now detect and
respond to sustained interrupt conditions more reliably.

access like s390, there are several errors due to the use of inl() and

The Blaize BLZP1600 GPIO controller is only present on BLaize BLZP1600
SoCs. Hence add a dependency on ARCH_BLAIZE, to prevent asking the user

For aggregators initialized via configfs, write 1 to 'live' waits for
probe completion and returns an error if the probe fails, unlike the
legacy sysfs interface, which is asynchronous.
Since users control the liveness of the aggregator device and might be
editing configurations while 'live' is 0, deferred probing is both
unnatural and unsafe.
Cancel deferred probe for purely configfs-based aggregators when probe
fails.

Expose settings for aggregators created using the sysfs 'new_device'
interface to configfs. Once written to 'new_device', an "_sysfs.<N>" path
appears in the configfs regardless of whether the probe succeeds.
Consequently, users can no longer use that prefix for custom GPIO
aggregator names. The 'live' attribute changes to 1 when the probe
succeeds and the GPIO forwarder is instantiated.
Note that the aggregator device created via sysfs is asynchronous, i.e.
writing into 'new_device' returns without waiting for probe completion,
and the probe may succeed, fail, or eventually succeed via deferred
probe. Thus, the 'live' attribute may change from 0 to 1 asynchronously
without notice. So, editing key/offset/name while it's waiting for
deferred probe is prohibited.
The configfs auto-generation relies on create_default_group(), which
inherently prohibits rmdir(2). To align with the limitation, this commit
also prohibits mkdir(2) for them. When users want to change the number
of lines for an aggregator initialized via 'new_device', they need to
tear down the device using 'delete_device' and reconfigure it from
scratch. This does not break previous behavior; users of legacy sysfs
interface simply gain additional almost read-only configfs exposure.
Still, users can write to the 'live' attribute to toggle the device
unless it's waiting for deferred probe. So once probe succeeds, they can
deactivate it in the same manner as the devices initialized via
configfs.

Rename the local variable 'name' in gpio_aggregator_parse() to 'key'
because struct gpio_aggregator_line now uses the 'name' field for the
custom line name and the local variable actually represents a 'key'.

The existing sysfs 'new_device' interface has several limitations:
* No way to determine when GPIO aggregator creation is complete.
* No way to retrieve errors when creating a GPIO aggregator.
* No way to trace a GPIO line of an aggregator back to its
corresponding physical device.
* The 'new_device' echo does not indicate which virtual gpiochip<N>
was created.
* No way to assign names to GPIO lines exported through an aggregator.
Introduce the new configfs interface for gpio-aggregator to address
these limitations. It provides a more streamlined, modern, and
extensible configuration method. For backward compatibility, the
'new_device' interface and its behavior is retained for now.
This commit implements basic functionalities:

Basic setup flow is:
1. Create a directory for a GPIO aggregator.
2. Create subdirectories for each line you want to instantiate.
3. In each line directory, configure the key and offset.
The key/offset semantics are as follows:
* If offset is >= 0:
- key specifies the name of the chip this GPIO belongs to
- offset specifies the line offset within that chip.
* If offset is <0:
- key needs to specify the GPIO line name.
4. Return to the aggregator's root directory and write '1' to the live
attribute.
For example, the command in the existing kernel doc:

Unify function names to use gpio_aggregator_ prefix (except GPIO
forwarder implementations, which remain unchanged in subsequent
commits). While at it, rename the pre-existing gpio_aggregator_free() to
gpio_aggregator_destory(), since that name will be used by new
alloc/free functions introduced in the next commit, for which the name
is more appropriate.

Reorder functions in drivers/gpio/gpio-aggregator.c to prepare for the
configfs-based interface additions in subsequent commits. Arrange the
code so that the configfs implementations will appear above the existing
sysfs-specific code, since the latter will partly depend on the configfs
interface implementations when it starts to expose the settings to
configfs.
The order in drivers/gpio/gpio-aggregator.c will be as follows:
* Basic gpio_aggregator/gpio_aggregator_line representations
* Common utility functions
* GPIO Forwarder implementations
* Configfs interface implementations
* Sysfs interface implementations
* Platform device implementations

The GPIOD_FLAGS_BIT_NONEXCLUSIVE flag and devm_gpiod_unhinge() function
should be replaced with a better solution. The pwrseq subsystem is a good
candidate. GPIOs themselves should remain a unique resource. Add a task
for tracking the removal of these deprecated symbols.

This function was introduced as a workaround for an issue with resource
ownership in the regulator subsystem. Rather than passing the ownership
of a GPIO, we should make the regulator core be able to deal with
resources it didn't request. Deprecate this function so that we don't
get more users in the tree.

Blaize BLZP1600 GPIO controller is provided by VeriSilicon
Microelectronics based on the GPIO APB v0.2 design. It has 32
input/output ports which can be configured as edge or level
triggered interrupts. It also provides a de-bounce feature.
This controller is used on the Blaize BLZP1600 SoC.

This is prepare patch for switching s5m8767 regulator driver to
use GPIO descriptor. DTS for exynos5250 spring incorrectly specifies
"active low" polarity for the DVS and DS line. But per datasheet,
they are actually active high. So add polarity quirk for it.

Some drivers as well as the character device and sysfs code check
whether the line actually is in output mode before allowing the user to
set a value.
However, GPIO value setters now return integer values and can indicate
failures. This allows us to move these checks into the core code.

When the Tegra186 GPIO controller is probed through ACPI matching,

It seems there really exists the need for a simple sysfs interface that
can be easily used from minimal initramfs images that don't contain much
more than busybox. However the current interface poses a challenge to
the removal of global GPIO numberspace. Add an item that tracks
extending the existing ABI with a per-chip export/unexport attribute
pair.

While there are surely some arguments in favor of integrating the GPIO
and pinctrl subsystems into one, I believe this is not the right
approach.
The GPIO subsystem uses intricate locking with SRCU to handle the fact
that both consumers and providers may run in different contexts.
Pin-controller drivers are always meant to run in process context. This
alone is a huge obstacle to any attempt at integration as evident by
many problems we already encountered during the hotplug rework.
The current glue code is pretty minimal and for most part already allows
GPIO controllers to query pinctrl about the information they need.
I suggest to drop this task and keep the subsystems separate even if
many pin-controllers implement GPIO functionality in addition to pin
functions.

We use a notifier to implement the mechanism of informing the user-space
about changes in GPIO line status. We register with the notifier when
the GPIO character device file is opened and unregister when the last
reference to the associated file descriptor is dropped.
Since commit fcc8b637c5 ("gpiolib: switch the line state notifier to
atomic") we use the atomic notifier variant. Atomic notifiers call
rcu_synchronize in atomic_notifier_chain_unregister() which caused a
significant performance regression in some circumstances, observed by
user-space when calling close() on the GPIO device file descriptor.
Replace the atomic notifier with the raw variant and provide
synchronization with a read-write spinlock.

During chip registration we should neither check the return value of
gc->get_direction() nor hold the SRCU lock when calling it. The former
is because pin controllers may have pins set to alternate functions and
return errors from their get_direction() callbacks. That's alright - we
should default to the safe INPUT state and not bail-out. The latter is
not needed because we haven't registered the chip yet so there's nothing
to protect against dynamic removal. In fact: we currently hit a lockdep
splat. Revert to calling the gc->get_direction() callback directly and
*not* checking its value.

The valid_mask member of the struct gpio_chip is unconditionally written
by the GPIO core at driver registration. Current documentation does not
mention this but just says the valid_mask is used if it's not NULL. This
lured me to try populating it directly in the GPIO driver probe instead
of using the init_valid_mask() callback. It took some retries with
different bitmaps and eventually a bit of code-reading to understand why
the valid_mask was not obeyed. I could've avoided this trial and error if
the valid_mask was hidden in the struct gpio_device instead of being a
visible member of the struct gpio_chip.
Help the next developer who decides to directly populate the valid_mask
in struct gpio_chip by hiding the valid_mask in struct gpio_device and
keep it internal to the GPIO core.

The valid_mask member of the struct gpio_chip is unconditionally written
by the GPIO core at driver registration. It should not be directly
populated by the drivers. Hiding the valid_mask in struct gpio_device
makes it clear it is not meant to be directly populated by drivers. This
means drivers should not access it directly from the struct gpio_chip.
The gpio-rcar checks the valid mask in set/get_multiple() operations.
This is no longer needed [1]. Drop these checks.
Additionally, the valid_mask is needed for enabling the GPIO inputs at
probe time. Use the new valid_mask -getter function instead of accessing
it directly from the struct gpio_chip.

When GPIOs were requested the validity of GPIOs were checked only when
the GPIO-chip had the request -callback populated. This made using
masked GPIOs possible.
The GPIO chip driver authors may find it difficult to understand the
relation of enforsing the GPIO validity and the 'request' -callback
because the current documentation for the 'request' callback does not
mention this. It only states:
* @request: optional hook for chip-specific activation, such as
* enabling module power and clock; may sleep
The validity of the GPIO line should be checked whether the driver
provides the 'request' callback or not.
Unconditionally check the GPIO validity when GPIO is being requested.

Both new_device_store and delete_device_store touch module global
resources (e.g. gpio_aggregator_lock). To prevent race conditions with
module unload, a reference needs to be held.
Add try_module_get() in these handlers.
For new_device_store, this eliminates what appears to be the most dangerous
scenario: if an id is allocated from gpio_aggregator_idr but
platform_device_register has not yet been called or completed, a concurrent
module unload could fail to unregister/delete the device, leaving behind a
dangling platform device/GPIO forwarder. This can result in various issues.
The following simple reproducer demonstrates these problems:

When describing GPIO controllers in the device tree, the ambition
of device tree to describe the hardware may require a three-cell
scheme:
gpios = <&gpio instance offset flags>;
This implements support for this scheme in the gpiolib OF core.
Drivers that want to handle multiple gpiochip instances from one
OF node need to implement a callback similar to this to
determine if a certain gpio chip is a pointer to the right
instance (pseudo-code):

Rename the "simple" of_xlate function to "twocell" which is closer
to what it actually does.
In the device tree bindings, the provide node needs
to specify #gpio-cells = <3>; where the first cell is the instance
number:

Conversely ranges need to have four cells:

GPIO drivers are not required to support set_multiple() - the core will
fallback to calling set() for each line if it's missing. Remove the
offending check from gpiochip_set_multiple().

The gpiod_direction_input_nonotify() function is supposed to return zero
if the direction for the pin is input. But instead it accidentally
returns GPIO_LINE_DIRECTION_IN (1) which will be cast into an ERR_PTR()
in gpiochip_request_own_desc(). The callers dereference it and it leads
to a crash.
I changed gpiod_direction_output_raw_commit() just for consistency but
returning GPIO_LINE_DIRECTION_OUT (0) is fine.
