4f31c532ad net: phy: corrected the return value for genphy_check_and_restart_aneg and genphy_c45_check_and_restart_aneg
When auto-negotiation is not required, return value should be zero.

503ba7c696 net: phy: Avoid multiple suspends
It is currently possible for a PHY device to be suspended as part of a
network device driver's suspend call while it is still being attached to
that net_device, either via phy_suspend() or implicitly via phy_stop().

Later on, when the MDIO bus controller get suspended, we would attempt
to suspend again the PHY because it is still attached to a network
device.

This is both a waste of time and creates an opportunity for improper
clock/power management bugs to creep in.

e96bd2d3b1 phy: avoid unnecessary link-up delay in polling mode
commit 93c0970493 ("net: phy: consider latched link-down status in
polling mode") removed double-read of latched link-state register for
polling mode from genphy_update_link(). This added extra ~1s delay into
sequence link down->up.
Following scenario:
 - After boot link goes up
 - phy_start() is called triggering an aneg restart, hence link goes
   down and link-down info is latched.
 - After aneg has finished link goes up. In phy_state_machine is checked
   link state but it is latched "link is down". The state machine is
   scheduled after one second and there is detected "link is up". This
   extra delay can be avoided when we keep link-state register double read
   in case when link was down previously.

With this solution we don't miss a link-down event in polling mode and
link-up is faster.

Details about this quirky behavior on Realtek phy:
Without patch:
T0:    aneg is started, link goes down, link-down status is latched
T0+3s: state machine runs, up-to-date link-down is read
T0+4s: state machine runs, aneg is finished (BMSR_ANEGCOMPLETE==1),
       here i read link-down (BMSR_LSTATUS==0),
T0+5s: state machine runs, aneg is finished (BMSR_ANEGCOMPLETE==1),
       up-to-date link-up is read (BMSR_LSTATUS==1),
       phydev->link goes up, state change PHY_NOLINK to PHY_RUNNING

With patch:
T0:    aneg is started, link goes down, link-down status is latched
T0+3s: state machine runs, up-to-date link-down is read
T0+4s: state machine runs, aneg is finished (BMSR_ANEGCOMPLETE==1),
       first BMSR read: BMSR_ANEGCOMPLETE==1 and BMSR_LSTATUS==0,
       second BMSR read: BMSR_ANEGCOMPLETE==1 and BMSR_LSTATUS==1,
       phydev->link goes up, state change PHY_NOLINK to PHY_RUNNING

Add a linkmode helper to set the flow control advertisement in an
ethtool linkmode mask according to the tx/rx capabilities. This
implementation is moved from phylib, and documented with an
analysis of its shortcomings.

a87ae8a963 net: add helpers to resolve negotiated flow control
Add a couple of helpers to resolve negotiated flow control. Two helpers
are provided:

- linkmode_resolve_pause() which takes the link partner and local
  advertisements, and decodes whether we should enable TX or RX pause
  at the MAC. This is useful outside of phylib, e.g. in phylink.
- phy_get_pause(), which returns the TX/RX enablement status for the
  current negotiation results of the PHY.

This allows us to centralise the flow control resolution, rather than
spreading it around.

e27f178793 net: phy: Added IRQ print to phylink_bringup_phy()
The information about the PHY attached to the PHYLINK instance is useful
but is missing the IRQ prints that phy_attached_info() adds.
phy_attached_info() is a bit long and it would not be possible to use
phylink_info() anyway.

4715f65ffa net: Introduce a new MII time stamping interface.
Currently the stack supports time stamping in PHY devices.  However,
there are newer, non-PHY devices that can snoop an MII bus and provide
time stamps.  In order to support such devices, this patch introduces
a new interface to be used by both PHY and non-PHY devices.

In addition, the one and only user of the old PHY time stamping API is
converted to the new interface.

a5d66f8100 net: phy: initialise phydev speed and duplex sanely
When a phydev is created, the speed and duplex are set to zero and
-1 respectively, rather than using the predefined SPEED_UNKNOWN and
DUPLEX_UNKNOWN constants.

There is a window at initialisation time where we may report link
down using the 0/-1 values.  Tidy this up and use the predefined
constants, so debug doesn't complain with:

"Unsupported (update phy-core.c)/Unsupported (update phy-core.c)"

when the speed and duplex settings are printed.

b95e86d846 net: phy: avoid matching all-ones clause 45 PHY IDs
We currently match clause 45 PHYs using any ID read from a MMD marked
as present in the "Devices in package" registers 5 and 6.  However,
this is incorrect.  45.2 says:

  "The definition of the term package is vendor specific and could be
   a chip, module, or other similar entity."

so a package could be more or less than the whole PHY - a PHY could be
made up of several modules instantiated onto a single chip such as the
Marvell 88x3310, or some of the MMDs could be disabled according to
chip configuration, such as the Broadcom 84881.

In the case of Broadcom 84881, the "Devices in package" registers
contain 0xc000009b, meaning that there is a PHYXS present in the
package, but all registers in MMD 4 return 0xffff.  This leads to our
matching code incorrectly binding this PHY to one of our generic PHY
drivers.

This patch changes the way we determine whether to attempt to match a
MMD identifier, or use it to request a module - if the identifier is
all-ones, then we skip over it. When reading the identifiers, we
initialise phydev->c45_ids.device_ids to all-ones, only reading the
device ID if the "Devices in package" registers indicates we should.

This avoids the generic drivers incorrectly matching on a PHY ID of
0xffffffff.

3de5ae5471 net: phy: Fix "link partner" information disappear issue
Some drivers just call phy_ethtool_ksettings_set() to set the
links, for those phy drivers that use genphy_read_status(), if
autoneg is on, and the link is up, than execute "ethtool -s
ethx autoneg on" will cause "link partner" information disappear.

The call trace is phy_ethtool_ksettings_set()->phy_start_aneg()
->linkmode_zero(phydev->lp_advertising)->genphy_read_status(),
the link didn't change, so genphy_read_status() just return, and
phydev->lp_advertising is zero now.

This patch moves the clear operation of lp_advertising from
phy_start_aneg() to genphy_read_lpa()/genphy_c45_read_lpa(), and
if autoneg on and autoneg not complete, just clear what the
generic functions care about.

c36757eb9d net: phy: consider AN_RESTART status when reading link status
After configuring and restarting aneg we immediately try to read the
link status. On some systems the PHY may not yet have cleared the
"aneg complete" and "link up" bits, resulting in a false link-up
signal. See [0] for a report.
Clause 22 and 45 both require the PHY to keep the AN_RESTART
bit set until the PHY actually starts auto-negotiation.
Let's consider this in the generic functions for reading link status.
The commit marked as fixed is the first one where the patch applies
cleanly.

f4069cd7fa net: phy: prepare phylib to deal with PHY's extending Clause 22
The integrated PHY in 2.5Gbps chip RTL8125 is the first (known to me)
PHY that uses standard Clause 22 for all modes up to 1Gbps and adds
2.5Gbps control using vendor-specific registers. To use phylib for
the standard part little extensions are needed:
- Move most of genphy_config_aneg to a new function
  __genphy_config_aneg that takes a parameter whether restarting
  auto-negotiation is needed (depending on whether content of
  vendor-specific advertisement register changed).
- Don't clear phydev->lp_advertising in genphy_read_status so that
  we can set non-C22 mode flags before.

Basically both changes mimic the behavior of the equivalent Clause 45
functions.

Using linkmode_adv_to_mii_adv_t and linkmode_adv_to_mii_ctrl1000_t
allows to simplify the code. In addition avoiding the conversion to
the legacy u32 advertisement format allows to remove the warning.

aa6b195615 net: phy: fix race in genphy_update_link
In phy_start_aneg() autoneg is started, and immediately after that
link and autoneg status are read. As reported in [0] it can happen that
at time of this read the PHY has reset the "aneg complete" bit but not
yet the "link up" bit, what can result in a false link-up detection.
To fix this don't report link as up if we're in aneg mode and PHY
doesn't signal "aneg complete".

54638c6eaf net: phy: make exported variables non-static
The variables phy_basic_ports_array, phy_fibre_port_array and
phy_all_ports_features_array are declared static and marked
EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL(), which is at best an odd combination.
Because the variables were decided to be a part of API, this commit
removes the static attributes and adds the declarations to the header.

f30e33bcda net: phy: Add more 1000BaseX support detection
Commit "net: phy: Add detection of 1000BaseX link mode support" added
support for not filtering out 1000BaseX mode from the PHY's supported
modes in genphy_config_init, but we have to make a similar change in
genphy_read_abilities in order to actually detect it as a supported mode
in the first place. Add this in.

ca72efb6bd net: phy: Add detection of 1000BaseX link mode support
Add 1000BaseX to the link modes which are detected based on the
MII_ESTATUS register as per 802.3 Clause 22. This allows PHYs which
support 1000BaseX to work properly with drivers using phylink.

Previously 1000BaseX support was not detected, and if that was the only
mode the PHY indicated support for, phylink would refuse to attach it
due to the list of supported modes being empty.

07b0928918 net: phy: enable interrupts when PHY is attached already
This patch is a step towards allowing PHY drivers to handle more
interrupt sources than just link change. E.g. several PHY's have
built-in temperature monitoring and can raise an interrupt if a
temperature threshold is exceeded. We may be interested in such
interrupts also if the phylib state machine isn't started.
Therefore move enabling interrupts to phy_request_interrupt().

Export a phy_standalone device attribute that is meant to give the

2db2d9d1ac net: phy: Guard against the presence of a netdev
A prerequisite for PHYLIB to work in the absence of a struct net_device
is to not access pointers to it.

Changes are needed in the following areas:

 - Printing: In some places netdev_err was replaced with phydev_err.

 - Incrementing reference count to the parent MDIO bus driver: If there
   is no net device, then the reference count should definitely be
   incremented since there is no chance that it was an Ethernet driver
   who registered the MDIO bus.

 - Sysfs links are not created in case there is no attached_dev.

 - No netif_carrier_off is done if there is no attached_dev.

for rx_pause being set.

The fixed commit isn't wrong, it's just the one that introduced the
linkmode bitmaps.

22c0ef6b14 net: phy: improve pause handling
When probing the phy device we set sym and asym pause in the "supported"
bitmap (unless the PHY tells us otherwise). However we don't know yet
whether the MAC supports pause. Simply copying phy->supported to
phy->advertising will trigger advertising pause, and that's not
what we want. Therefore add phy_advertise_supported() that copies all
modes but doesn't touch the pause bits.

In phy_support_(a)sym_pause we shouldn't set any bits in the supported
bitmap because we may set a bit the PHY intentionally disabled.
Effective pause support should be the AND-combined PHY and MAC pause
capabilities. If the MAC supports everything, then it's only relevant
what the PHY supports. If MAC supports sym pause only, then we have to
clear the asym bit in phydev->supported.
Copy the pause flags only and don't touch the modes, because a driver
may have intentionally removed a mode from phydev->advertising.

8c90b795e9 net: phy: improve genphy_soft_reset
PHY's behave differently when being reset. Some reset registers to
defaults, some don't. Some trigger an autoneg restart, some don't.

So let's also set the autoneg restart bit when resetting. Then PHY
behavior should be more consistent. Clearing BMCR_ISOLATE serves the
same purpose and is borrowed from genphy_restart_aneg.

BMCR holds the speed / duplex settings in fixed mode. Therefore
we may have an issue if a soft reset resets BMCR to its default.
So better call genphy_setup_forced() afterwards in fixed mode.
We've seen no related complaint in the last >10 yrs, so let's
treat it as an improvement.

In phy_device_create() we set phydev->autoneg = 1. This isn't changed
even if the PHY doesn't support autoneg. This seems to affect very
few PHY's, and they disable phydev->autoneg in their config_init
callback. So it's more of an improvement, therefore net-next.
The patch also wouldn't apply to older kernel versions because the
link mode bitmaps have been introduced recently.

Recently a number of generic functions for Clause 45 PHY's has been
added. So let's replace the old very limited genphy_10g_driver with a
genphy_c45_driver. This driver isn't limited to 10G, however it's worth
to be noted that Clause 45 doesn't cover 1000Base-T. For using
1000Base-T with a Clause 45 PHY a dedicated PHY driver using vendor
registers is needed.

genphy_read_status() so far checks phydev->supported, not the actual
PHY capabilities. This can make a difference if the supported speeds
have been limited by of_set_phy_supported() or phy_set_max_speed().

It seems that this issue only affects the link partner advertisements
as displayed by ethtool. Also this patch wouldn't apply to older
kernels because linkmode bitmaps have been introduced recently.

The original patch didn't consider the case that autoneg process
finishes successfully but both link partners have no mode in common.
In this case there's no link, nevertheless we may be interested in
what the link partner advertised.

Like phydev->link we set phydev->autoneg_complete in
genphy_update_link() and use the stored value in genphy_read_status().
This way we don't have to read register BMSR again.

d29f5aa0bc net: phy: don't clear BMCR in genphy_soft_reset
So far we effectively clear the BMCR register. Some PHY's can deal
with this (e.g. because they reset BMCR to a default as part of a
soft-reset) whilst on others this causes issues because e.g. the
autoneg bit is cleared. Marvell is an example, see also thread [0].
So let's be a little bit more gentle and leave all bits we're not
interested in as-is. This change is needed for PHY drivers to
properly deal with the original patch.

efbdfdc29b net: phy: Add support for asking the PHY its abilities
Add support for runtime determination of what the PHY supports, by
adding a new function to the phy driver. The get_features call should
set the phydev->supported member with the features the PHY supports.
It is only called if phydrv->features is NULL.

This requires minor changes to pause. The PHY driver should not set
pause abilities, except for when it has odd cause capabilities, e.g.
pause cannot be disabled. With this change, phydev->supported already
contains the drivers abilities, including pause. So rather than
considering phydrv->features, look at the phydev->supported, and
enable pause if neither of the pause bits are already set.

Bit 0 in register 1.5 doesn't represent a device but is a flag that
Clause 22 registers are present. Therefore disregard this bit when
populating the device list. If code needs this information it
should read register 1.5 directly instead of accessing the device
list.
Because this bit doesn't represent a device don't define a
MDIO_MMD_XYZ constant, just define a MDIO_DEVS_XYZ constant for
the flag in the device list bitmap.

93c0970493 net: phy: consider latched link-down status in polling mode
The link status value latches link-down events. To get the current
status we read the register twice in genphy_update_link(). There's
a potential risk that we miss a link-down event in polling mode.
This may cause issues if the user e.g. connects his machine to a
different network.

On the other hand reading the latched value may cause issues in
interrupt mode. Following scenario:

- After boot link goes up
- phy_start() is called triggering an aneg restart, hence link goes
  down and link-down info is latched.
- After aneg has finished link goes up and triggers an interrupt.
  Interrupt handler reads link status, means it reads the latched
  "link is down" info. But there won't be another interrupt as long
  as link stays up, therefore phylib will never recognize that link
  is up.

Deal with both scenarios by reading the register twice in interrupt
mode only.

It was reported that on a system with nfsboot and w/o initramfs network

8742beb50f net: phy: Fix the issue that netif always links up after resuming
Even though the link is down before entering hibernation,
there is an issue that the network interface always links up after resuming
from hibernation.

If the link is still down before enabling the network interface,
and after resuming from hibernation, the phydev->state is forcibly set
to PHY_UP in mdio_bus_phy_restore(), and the link becomes up.

In suspend sequence, only if the PHY is attached, mdio_bus_phy_suspend()
calls phy_stop_machine(), and mdio_bus_phy_resume() calls
phy_start_machine().
In resume sequence, it's enough to do the same as mdio_bus_phy_resume()
because the state has been preserved.

This patch fixes the issue by calling phy_start_machine() in
mdio_bus_phy_restore() in the same way as mdio_bus_phy_resume().

c85ddecae6 net: phy: add workaround for issue where PHY driver doesn't bind to the device
After switching the r8169 driver to use phylib some user reported that
their network is broken. This was caused by the genphy PHY driver being
used instead of the dedicated PHY driver for the RTL8211B. Users
reported that loading the Realtek PHY driver module upfront fixes the
issue. See also this mail thread:

The issue is quite weird and the root cause seems to be somewhere in
the base driver core. The patch works around the issue and may be
removed once the actual issue is fixed.

The Fixes tag refers to the first reported occurrence of the issue.
The issue itself may have been existing much longer and it may affect
users of other network chips as well. Users typically will recognize
this issue only if their PHY stops working when being used with the
genphy driver.

There are a few MAC/PHYs combinations which now support > 1Gbps. These
may need to make use of link modes with bits > 31. Thus their
supported PHY features or advertised features cannot be implemented
using the current bitmap in a u32. Convert to using a linkmode bitmap,
which can support all the currently devices link modes, and is future
proof as more modes are added.

d73a2156bd net: phy: simplify phy_mac_interrupt and related functions
When using phy_mac_interrupt() the irq number is set to
PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT, therefore phy_interrupt_is_valid() returns false.
As a result phy_change() effectively just calls phy_trigger_machine()
when called from phy_mac_interrupt() via phy_change_work(). So we can
call phy_trigger_machine() from phy_mac_interrupt() directly and
remove some now unneeded code.

719655a149 net: phy: Replace phy driver features u32 with link_mode bitmap
This is one step in allowing phylib to make use of link_mode bitmaps,
instead of u32 for supported and advertised features. Convert the phy
drivers to use bitmaps to indicates the features they support.

Build bitmap equivalents of the u32 values at runtime, and have the
drivers point to the appropriate bitmap. These bitmaps are shared, and
we don't want a driver to modify them. So mark them __ro_after_init.

Within phylib, the features bitmap is currently turned back into a
u32. This will be removed once the whole of phylib, and the drivers
are converted to use bitmaps.

should not because of WoL. phy_suspend() checks for WoL already, but
this works only if the PHY driver handles WoL (what is rarely the case).
Typically WoL is handled by the MAC driver.

This patch uses new member wol_enabled of struct net_device as
additional criteria in the check when not to suspend the PHY because
of WoL.

Last but not least change phy_detach() to call phy_suspend() before
attached_dev is set to NULL. phy_suspend() accesses attached_dev
when checking whether the MAC driver activated WoL.

Actually there's nothing wrong with the two changes marked as "Fixes",
they just revealed a problem which has been existing before.
After having switched r8169 to phylib it was reported that WoL from
shutdown doesn't work any longer (WoL from suspend isn't affected).
Reason is that during shutdown phy_disconnect()->phy_detach()->
phy_suspend() is called.
A similar issue occurs when the phylib state machine calls
phy_suspend() when handling state PHY_HALTED.

Core of the problem is that phy_suspend() suspends the PHY when it
should not due to WoL. phy_suspend() checks for WoL already, but this
works only if the PHY driver handles WoL (what is rarely the case).
Typically WoL is handled by the MAC driver.

phylib knows about this and handles it in mdio_bus_phy_may_suspend(),
but that's used only when suspending the system, not in other cases
like shutdown.

Therefore factor out the relevant check from
mdio_bus_phy_may_suspend() to a new function phy_may_suspend() and
use it in phy_suspend().

Last but not least change phy_detach() to call phy_suspend() before
attached_dev is set to NULL. phy_suspend() accesses attached_dev
when checking whether the MAC driver activated WoL.

6e2d85ec05 net: phy: Stop with excessive soft reset
While consolidating the PHY reset in phy_init_hw() an unconditionaly
BMCR soft-reset I became quite trigger happy with those. This was later
on deactivated for the Generic PHY driver on the premise that a prior
software entity (e.g: bootloader) might have applied workarounds in
commit 0878fff1f4 ("net: phy: Do not perform software reset for
Generic PHY").

Since we have a hook to wire-up a soft_reset callback, just use that and
get rid of the call to genphy_soft_reset() entirely. This speeds up
initialization and link establishment for most PHYs out there that do
not require a reset.

b8f8c8eb40 net: phy: add GBit master / slave error detection
Certain PHY's have issues when operating in GBit slave mode and can
be forced to master mode. Examples are RTL8211C, also the Micrel PHY
driver has a DT setting to force master mode.
If two such chips are link partners the autonegotiation will fail.
Standard defines a self-clearing on read, latched-high bit to
indicate this error. Check this bit to inform the user.

Currently also the pause flags are removed from phydev->supported because
they're not included in PHY_DEFAULT_FEATURES. I don't think this is
intended, especially when considering that this function can be called
via phy_set_max_speed() anywhere in a driver. Change the masking to mask
out only the values we're going to change. In addition remove the
misleading comment, job of this small function is just to adjust the
supported and advertised speeds.

02a6efcab6 net: phy: allow scanning busses with missing phys
Some MDIO busses will error out when trying to read a phy address with no
phy present at that address. In that case, probing the bus will fail
because __mdiobus_register() is scanning the bus for all possible phys
addresses.

In case MII_PHYSID1 returns -EIO or -ENODEV, consider there is no phy at
this address and set the phy ID to 0xffffffff which is then properly
handled in get_phy_device().

For the mac80211 stuff, these were fortunately just parallel
adds.  Trivially resolved.

In drivers/net/phy/phy.c we had a bug fix in 'net' that moved the
function phy_disable_interrupts() earlier in the file, whilst in
'net-next' the phy_error() call from this function was removed.

In net/ipv4/xfrm4_policy.c, David Ahern's changes to remove the
'rt_table_id' member of rtable collided with a bug fix in 'net' that
added a new struct member "rt_mtu_locked" which needs to be copied
over here.

The mlxsw driver conflict consisted of net-next separating
the span code and definitions into separate files, whilst
a 'net' bug fix made some changes to that moved code.

The mlx5 infiniband conflict resolution was quite non-trivial,
the RDMA tree's merge commit was used as a guide here, and
here are their notes:

    Due to bug fixes found by the syzkaller bot and taken into the for-rc
    branch after development for the 4.17 merge window had already started
    being taken into the for-next branch, there were fairly non-trivial
    merge issues that would need to be resolved between the for-rc branch
    and the for-next branch.  This merge resolves those conflicts and

Some ethernet drivers (like TI CPSW) may connect and manage >1 Net PHYs per
one netdevice, as result such drivers will produce warning during system
boot and fail to connect second phy to netdevice when PHYLIB framework
will try to create sysfs link netdev->phydev for second PHY
in phy_attach_direct(), because sysfs link with the same name has been
created already for the first PHY. As result, second CPSW external
port will became unusable.

Fix it by relaxing error checking when PHYLIB framework is creating sysfs
link netdev->phydev in phy_attach_direct(), suppressing warning by using
sysfs_create_link_nowarn() and adding error message instead.
After this change links (phy->netdev and netdev->phy) creation failure is not
fatal any more and system can continue working, which fixes TI CPSW issue.

c69851e940 net: phy: set link state to down when creating the phy_device
Currently the link state is initialized to "up" when the phy_device is
being created. This is not consistent with the phy state being
initialized to PHY_DOWN.

Usually this doen't do any harm because the link state is updated
once the PHY reaches state PHY_AN. However e.g. if a LAN port isn't
used and the PHY remains down this inconsistency remains and calls
to functions like phy_print_status() give false results.
Therefore change the initialization to link being down.

commit f5e64032a7 ("net: phy: fix resume handling") changes the
locking semantics for phy_resume() such that the caller now needs to
hold the phy mutex. Not all call sites were adopted to this new
semantic, resulting in warnings from the added
WARN_ON(!mutex_is_locked(&phydev->lock)).  Rather than change the
semantics, add a __phy_resume() and restore the old behavior of
phy_resume().

f5e64032a7 net: phy: fix resume handling
When a PHY has the BMCR_PDOWN bit set, it may decide to ignore writes
to other registers, or reset the registers to power-on defaults.
Micrel PHYs do this for their interrupt registers.

The current structure of phylib tries to enable interrupts before
resuming (and releasing) the BMCR_PDOWN bit.  This fails, causing
Micrel PHYs to stop working after a suspend/resume sequence if they
are using interrupts.

Fix this by ensuring that the PHY driver resume methods do not take
the phydev->lock mutex themselves, but the callers of phy_resume()
take that lock.  This then allows us to move the call to phy_resume()
before we enable interrupts in phy_start().

a96684914a phylib: add reset after clk enable support
Some PHYs need the refclk to be a continuous clock. Therefore they don't
allow turning it off and on again during operation. Nonetheless such a
clock switching is performed by some ETH drivers (namely FEC [1]) for
power saving reasons. An example for an affected PHY is the
SMSC/Microchip LAN8720 in "REF_CLK In Mode".

In order to provide a uniform method to overcome this problem this patch
adds a new phy_driver flag (PHY_RST_AFTER_CLK_EN) and corresponding
function phy_reset_after_clk_enable() to the phylib. These should be
used to trigger reset of the PHY after the refclk is switched on again.

bafbdd527d phylib: Add device reset GPIO support
The PHY devices sometimes do have their reset signal (maybe even power
supply?) tied to some GPIO and sometimes it also does happen that a boot
loader does not leave it deasserted. So far this issue has been attacked
from (as I believe) a wrong angle: by teaching the MAC driver to manipulate
the GPIO in question; that solution, when applied to the device trees, led
to adding the PHY reset GPIO properties to the MAC device node, with one
exception: Cadence MACB driver which could handle the "reset-gpios" prop
in a PHY device subnode. I believe that the correct approach is to teach
the 'phylib' to get the MDIO device reset GPIO from the device tree node
corresponding to this device -- which this patch is doing...

Note that I had to modify the AT803x PHY driver as it would stop working
otherwise -- it made use of the reset GPIO for its own purposes...

Given NR_IRQS is 2048 on sparc64, and even 32784 on alpha, 3 digits is
not enough to represent interrupt numbers on all architectures.  Hence
PHY interrupt numbers may be truncated during printing.

Increase the buffer size from 4 to 8 bytes to fix this.

9525ae8395 phylink: add phylink infrastructure
The link between the ethernet MAC and its PHY has become more complex
as the interface evolves.  This is especially true with serdes links,
where the part of the PHY is effectively integrated into the MAC.

Serdes links can be connected to a variety of devices, including SFF
modules soldered down onto the board with the MAC, a SFP cage with
a hotpluggable SFP module which may contain a PHY or directly modulate
the serdes signals onto optical media with or without a PHY, or even
a classical PHY connection.

Moreover, the negotiation information on serdes links comes in two
varieties - SGMII mode, where the PHY provides its speed/duplex/flow
control information to the MAC, and 1000base-X mode where both ends
exchange their abilities and each resolve the link capabilities.

This means we need a more flexible means to support these arrangements,
particularly with the hotpluggable nature of SFP, where the PHY can
be attached or detached after the network device has been brought up.

Ethtool information can come from multiple sources:
- we may have a PHY operating in either SGMII or 1000base-X mode, in
  which case we take ethtool/mii data directly from the PHY.
- we may have a optical SFP module without a PHY, with the MAC
  operating in 1000base-X mode - the ethtool/mii data needs to come
  from the MAC.
- we may have a copper SFP module with a PHY whic can't be accessed,
  which means we need to take ethtool/mii data from the MAC.

Phylink aims to solve this by providing an intermediary between the
MAC and PHY, providing a safe way for PHYs to be hotplugged, and
allowing a SFP driver to reconfigure the serdes connection.

Phylink also takes over support of fixed link connections, where the
speed/duplex/flow control are fixed, but link status may be controlled
by a GPIO signal.  By avoiding the fixed-phy implementation, phylink
can provide a faster response to link events: fixed-phy has to wait for
phylib to operate its state machine, which can take several seconds.
In comparison, phylink takes milliseconds.

a81497bee7 net: phy: provide a hook for link up/link down events
Sometimes, we need to do additional work between the PHY coming up and
marking the carrier present - for example, we may need to wait for the
PHY to MAC link to finish negotiation.  This changes phylib to provide
a notification function pointer which avoids the built-in
netif_carrier_on() and netif_carrier_off() functions.

Standard ->adjust_link functionality is provided by hooking a helper
into the new ->phy_link_change method.

Some Ethernet drivers will attach/connect to a PHY device before calling
register_netdevice() which is responsible for calling netdev_register_kobject()
which would do the network device's kobject initialization. In such a case,
sysfs_create_link() would return -ENOENT because the network device's kobject
is not ready yet, and we would fail to connect to the PHY device.

In order to keep things simple and symetrical, we just take the success path as
indicative of the ability to access the network device's kobject, and create
the second link if that's the case.

5568363f0c net: phy: Create sysfs reciprocal links for attached_dev/phydev
There is currently no way for a program scanning /sys to know whether a
network device is attached to a particular PHY device, just like the PHY
device is not pointed back to its attached network device.

Create a symbolic link in the network device's namespace named "phydev"
which points to the PHY device and create a symbolic link in the PHY
device's namespace named "attached_dev" that points back to the network
device. These links are set up during phy_attach_direct() and removed
during phy_detach() for symetry.

0878fff1f4 net: phy: Do not perform software reset for Generic PHY
The Generic PHY driver is a catch-all PHY driver and it should preserve
whatever prior initialization has been done by boot loader or firmware
agents. For specific PHY device configuration it is expected that a
specialized PHY driver would take over that role.

Resetting the generic PHY was a bad idea that has lead to several
complaints and downstream workarounds e.g: in OpenWrt/LEDE so restore
the behavior prior to 87aa9f9c61 ("net: phy: consolidate PHY
reset in phy_init_hw()").

25149ef9d2 net: phy: Check phydev->drv
There are number of function calls, originating from user-space,
typically through the Ethernet driver that can make us crash by
dereferencing phydev->drv which will be NULL once we unbind the driver
from the PHY.

There are still functional issues that prevent an unbind then rebind to
work, but these will be addressed separately.

thing we would see is that we were not properly canceling the PHY state machine

6d9f66ac7f net: phy: Fix PHY module checks and NULL deref in phy_attach_direct()
The Generic PHY drivers gets assigned after we checked that the current
PHY driver is NULL, so we need to check a few things before we can
safely dereference d->driver. This would be causing a NULL deference to
occur when a system binds to the Generic PHY driver. Update
phy_attach_direct() to do the following:

- grab the driver module reference after we have assigned the Generic
  PHY drivers accordingly, and remember we came from the generic PHY
  path

- update the error path to clean up the module reference in case the
  Generic PHY probe function fails

- split the error path involving phy_detacht() to avoid double free/put
  since phy_detach() does all the clean up

- finally, have phy_detach() drop the module reference count before we
  call device_release_driver() for the Generic PHY driver case

57f3986231 net: phy: use boolean dt properties for eee broken modes
The patches regarding eee-broken-modes was merged before all people
involved could find an agreement on the best way to move forward.

While we agreed on having a DT property to mark particular modes as broken,
the value used for eee-broken-modes mapped the phy register in very direct
way. Because of this, the concern is that it could be used to implement
configuration policies instead of describing a broken HW.

In the end, having a boolean property for each mode seems to be preferred
over one bit field value mapping the register (too) directly.

529ed12752 net: phy: phy drivers should not set SUPPORTED_[Asym_]Pause
Instead of having individual PHY drivers set the SUPPORTED_Pause and
SUPPORTED_Asym_Pause flags, phylib itself should set those flags,
unless there is a hardware erratum or other special case.  During
autonegotiation, the PHYs will determine whether to enable pause
frame support.

Pause frames are a feature that is supported by the MAC.  It is the MAC
that generates the frames and that processes them.  The PHY can only be
configured to allow them to pass through.

This commit also effectively reverts the recently applied c7a61319
("net: phy: dp83848: Support ethernet pause frames").

So the new process is:

1) Unless the PHY driver overrides it, phylib sets the SUPPORTED_Pause
and SUPPORTED_AsymPause bits in phydev->supported.  This indicates that
the PHY supports pause frames.

2) The MAC driver checks phydev->supported before it calls phy_start().
If (SUPPORTED_Pause | SUPPORTED_AsymPause) is set, then the MAC driver
sets those bits in phydev->advertising, if it wants to enable pause
frame support.

3) When the link state changes, the MAC driver checks phydev->pause and
phydev->asym_pause,  If the bits are set, then it enables the corresponding
features in the MAC.  The algorithm is:

	if (phydev->pause)
		The MAC should be programmed to receive and honor
                pause frames it receives, i.e. enable receive flow control.

	if (phydev->pause != phydev->asym_pause)
		The MAC should be programmed to transmit pause
		frames when needed, i.e. enable transmit flow control.

ec988ad78e phy: Don't increment MDIO bus refcount unless it's a different owner
Commit 3e3aaf6494 ("phy: fix mdiobus module safety") fixed the way we
dealt with MDIO bus module reference count, but sort of introduced a
regression in that, if an Ethernet driver registers its own MDIO bus
driver, as is common, we will end up with the Ethernet driver's
module->refnct set to 1, thus preventing this driver from any removal.

Fix this by comparing the network device's device driver owner against
the MDIO bus driver owner, and only if they are different, increment the
MDIO bus module refcount.

If device_release_driver(&phydev->mdio.dev) is called, it releases all
resources belonging to the PHY device. Hence the subsequent call to

to device_release_driver() to fix this.

d853d145ea net: phy: add an option to disable EEE advertisement
This patch adds an option to disable EEE advertisement in the generic PHY
by providing a mask of prohibited modes corresponding to the value found in
the MDIO_AN_EEE_ADV register.

On some platforms, PHY Low power idle seems to be causing issues, even
breaking the link some cases. The patch provides a convenient way for these
platforms to disable EEE advertisement and work around the issue.

2e0bc452f4 net: phy: leds: add support for led triggers on phy link state change
Create an option CONFIG_LED_TRIGGER_PHY (default n), which will create a
set of led triggers for each instantiated PHY device. There is one LED
trigger per link-speed, per-phy.
The triggers are registered during phy_attach and unregistered during
phy_detach.

This allows for a user to configure their system to allow a set of LEDs
not controlled by the phy to represent link state changes on the phy.
LEDS controlled by the phy are unaffected.

For example, we have a board where some of the leds in the
RJ45 socket are controlled by the phy, but others are not. Using the
triggers provided by this patch the leds not controlled by the phy can
be configured to show the current speed of the ethernet connection. The
leds controlled by the phy are unaffected.

664fcf123a net: phy: Threaded interrupts allow some simplification
The PHY interrupts are now handled in a threaded interrupt handler,
which can sleep. The work queue is no longer needed, phy_change() can
be called directly. phy_mac_interrupt() still needs to be safe to call
in interrupt context, so keep the work queue, and use a helper to call
phy_change().

f48256efed phy: make some bits preserved while setup forced mode
When tested the PHY SGMII Loopback:
1.set the LOOPBACK bit,
2.set the autoneg to AUTONEG_DISABLE, it calls the
genphy_setup_forced which will clear the bit.

The BMCR_LOOPBACK bit should be preserved.

As Florian pointed out that other bits should be preserved too.
So I make the BMCR_ISOLATE and BMCR_PDOWN as well.

113c74d83e net: phy: turn carrier off on phy attach
The operstate of a networking device initially IF_OPER_UNKNOWN aka
"unknown", updated on carrier state changes (with carrier state being on
by default). This means it will stay unknown unless the carrier state
goes to off at some point, which is not the case if the phy is already
up/connected at startup.

Explicitly turn off the carrier on phy attach, leaving the phy state
machine to turn the carrier on when it has done the initial negotiation.

5cf11beef2 phy_device: Move phy attributes into phy_device
The mdio_bus exports three attributes:

- PHY ID is the unique 32-bits identifier for a MDIO device implementing
  standard MII registers MII_PHYSID1/2, which is not guaranteed to be the
  case for non-standard compliant devices (e.g: Ethernet switches)

- PHY interface describes the data-path of the PHY/MDIO device, which is
  not strictly a PHY thing, but is required and needed for PHY devices to
  function, a MDIO device could be a control device exclusively

- PHY has fixups describes what the PHY driver may have done, so
  completely PHY specific

These are all phy attributes, not generic mdio attributes. So move the
attributes into the phy device code.

When probing devices-in-package for a c45 phy, device zero is the last
device to probe, however, if driver reads 0 from device zero,
c45_ids->devices_in_package is set to '0', the loop condition of probing
will be matched again, see codes below:

for (i = 1;i < num_ids && c45_ids->devices_in_package == 0;i++)

driver will run in a dead loop.

This patch restructures the bug and confusing loop, it provides a helper
function get_phy_c45_devs_in_pkg which to read devices-in-package registers
of a MMD, and rewrites the loop with using the helper function.

Add a helper to allow ethernet drivers to limit the speed of a phy
(that they are attached to).

This mainly involves factoring out the business-end of
of_set_phy_supported() and exporting a new symbol.

This code seems to be open coded in several places, in several different
variants.

It is is envisaged that this will be used in situations where setting the
"max-speed" property in DT is not appropriate, e.g. because the maximum
speed is not a property of the phy hardware.

3e3aaf6494 phy: fix mdiobus module safety
Re-implement the mdiobus module refcounting to ensure that we actually
ensure that the mdiobus module code does not go away while we might call
into it.

The old scheme using bus->dev.driver was buggy, because bus->dev is a
class device which never has a struct device_driver associated with it,
and hence the associated code trying to obtain a refcount did nothing
useful.

Instead, take the approach that other subsystems do: pass the module
when calling mdiobus_register(), and record that in the mii_bus struct.
When we need to increment the module use count in the phy code, use
this stored pointer.  When the phy is deteched, drop the module
refcount, remembering that the phy device might go away at that point.

This doesn't stop the mii_bus going away while there are in-use phys -
it merely stops the underlying code vanishing.

8b63ec1837 phylib: Make PHYs children of their MDIO bus, not the bus' parent.
commit 18ee49ddb0 ("phylib: rename mii_bus::dev to mii_bus::parent")
changed the parent of PHY devices from the bus to the bus parent.

Then, commit 4dea547fef ("phylib: rework to prepare for OF
registration of PHYs") moved the code into phy_device.c

At this point, it is somewhat unclear why the change was seen as
necessary.  But, when we look at the device model tree in
/sys/devices, it is clearly incorrect.  The PHYs should be children of
their MDIO bus.

Change the PHY's parent device to be the MDIO bus device.

eb686231fc net: phy: fix phy link up when limiting speed via device tree
When limiting phy link speed using "max-speed" to 100mbps or less on a
giga bit phy, phy never completes auto negotiation and phy state
machine is held in PHY_AN. Fixing this issue by comparing the giga
bit advertise though phydev->supported doesn't have it but phy has
BMSR_ESTATEN set. So that auto negotiation is restarted as old and
new advertise are different and link comes up fine.

d92f5dec63 net: phy: re-apply PHY fixups during phy_register_device
Commit 87aa9f9c61 ("net: phy: consolidate PHY reset in phy_init_hw()")
moved the call to phy_scan_fixups() in phy_init_hw() after a software
reset is performed.

By the time phy_init_hw() is called in phy_device_register(), no driver
has been bound to this PHY yet, so all the checks in phy_init_hw()
against the PHY driver and the PHY driver's config_init function will
return 0. We will therefore never call phy_scan_fixups() as we should.

Fix this by calling phy_scan_fixups() and check for its return value to
restore the intended functionality.

This broke PHY drivers which do register an early PHY fixup callback to
intercept the PHY probing and do things like changing the 32-bits unique
PHY identifier when a pseudo-PHY address has been used, as well as
board-specific PHY fixups that need to be applied during driver probe
time.

of_set_phy_supported allows overwiting hardware capabilities of
a phy with values from the devicetree. of_set_phy_supported is
called right after phy_device_register in the assumption that
phy_probe is called from phy_device_register and the features
of the phy are already initialized. For the genphy driver this
is not true, here phy_probe is called later during phy_connect
time. phy_probe will then overwrite all settings done from
of_set_phy_supported
Fix this by moving of_set_phy_supported to the core phy code
and calling it from phy_probe.

of_set_phy_supported allows overwiting hardware capabilities of
a phy with values from the devicetree. This does not work with
the genphy driver though because the genphys config_init function
will overwrite all values adjusted by of_set_phy_supported. Fix
this by initialising the genphy features in the phy_driver struct
and in config_init just limit the features to the ones the hardware
can actually support. The resulting features are a subset of the
devicetree specified features and the hardware features.

As pointed out by Shaohui, most 10G PHYs out there have a non-standard
compliant software reset sequence, eventually something much more
complex than just toggling the BMCR_RESET bit. Allow PHY driver to
implement their own soft_reset() callback to deal with that. If no
callback is provided, call into genphy_soft_reset() which makes sure the
existing behavior is kept intact.

5273e3a5ca net: phy: ensure Gigabit features are masked off if requested
When a Gigabit PHY device is connected to a 10/100Mbits capable Ethernet
MAC, the driver will restrict the phydev->supported modes to mask off
Gigabit. If the Gigabit PHY comes out of reset with the Gigabit features
set by default in MII_CTRL1000, it will keep advertising these feature,
so by the time we call genphy_config_advert(), the condition on
phydev->supported having the Gigabit features on is false, and we do not
update MII_CTRL1000 with updated values, and we keep advertising Gigabit
features, eventually configuring the PHY for Gigabit whilst the Ethernet
MAC does not support that.

This patches fixes the problem by ensuring that the Gigabit feature bits
are always cleared in MII_CTRL1000, if the PHY happens to be a Gigabit
PHY, and then, if Gigabit features are supported, setting those and
updating MII_CTRL1000 accordingly.

phy_attach_direct() may now attach to a generic 10G driver. It can
also be used exactly as phy_connect_direct(), which will be useful
when using of_mdio, as phy_connect (and therefore of_phy_connect)

PHYs.

2f53e9047e phy: coding style fixes
The recent patch from Florian Fainelli fixed all 'checkpatch.pl' errors but left
the numerous warnings:

- including <asm/io.h> instead of <linux/io.h>;

- including <asm/uaccess.h> instead of <linux/uaccess.h>;

- *extern* declaration in .c file;

- block comments using empty /* line;

- block comments not starting with * on the middle lines;

- block comments not having trailing */ on a separate line;

- EXPORT_SYMBOL() not immediately following its function;

- unnecessary {} for signle statement block;

- spaces before tabs.

While fixing these, also fix the following style issues (some of which were
found running 'checkpatch.pl --strict'):

- alignment not matching open paren;

- missing {} on one of the *if* arms where another has them;

- use of sizeof(struct structure) instead of sizeof(*variable);

- multiple assignments on one line;

- empty line before };

- file names in the heading comments;

- missing spaces around operators;

- no {} around multi-line *if* operator's arm;

- unneeded () around subexpressions;

- incomplete kernel-doc comment style;

- comment line exceeding 80 characters;

- missing empty line after declarations.

87aa9f9c61 net: phy: consolidate PHY reset in phy_init_hw()
There are quite a lot of drivers touching a PHY device MII_BMCR
register to reset the PHY without taking care of:

1) ensuring that BMCR_RESET is cleared after a given timeout
2) the PHY state machine resuming to the proper state and re-applying
potentially changed settings such as auto-negotiation

Introduce phy_poll_reset() which will take care of polling the MII_BMCR
for the BMCR_RESET bit to be cleared after a given timeout or return a
timeout error code.

In order to make sure the PHY is in a correct state, phy_init_hw() first
issues a software reset through MII_BMCR and then applies any fixups.

4284b6a535 phy: allow drivers to flag a PHY device as internal
libphy currently always reports a PHY as an external transceiver from
the ethtool output. This is inaccurate, because some drivers should be
able to tell that a PHY device is an internal transceiver of an Ethernet
MAC. Add a new flag (PHY_IS_INTERNAL) which can be set by PHY drivers
just like other flags, and a corresponding helper: phy_is_internal()
which can be used by networking drivers to query if a given
PHY device is internal.

5ea94e7686 phy: add phy_mac_interrupt() to use with PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT
There is currently no way for an Ethernet MAC driver servicing PHY link
interrupts to notify this to the PHY state machine without defining its
own state machine. Since most drivers are not so special, introduce a
helper: phy_mac_interrupt() which can be called from a link up/down
interrupt routine to update the PHY state machine. To avoid code
duplication some refactoring has been done to expose the workqueue and
its corresponding callback internally.

2c7b49212a phy: fix the use of PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT
When a PHY device is registered with the special IRQ value
PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT (-2) it will not properly be handled by the PHY
library:

- it continues to poll its register, while we do not want this
  because such PHY link events or register changes are serviced by an
  Ethernet MAC
- it will still try to configure PHY interrupts at the PHY level, such
  interrupts do not exist at the PHY but at the MAC level
- the state machine only handles PHY_POLL, but should also handle
  PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT similarly

This patch updates the PHY state machine and initialization paths to
account for the specific PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT. Based on an earlier patch
by Thomas Petazzoni, and reworked to add the missing bits. Add a helper
phy_interrupt_is_valid() which specifically tests for a PHY interrupt
not to be PHY_POLL or PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT and use it throughout the
code.

b2a431915d phy: Fix phy_device_free memory leak
Fix memory leak in phy_device_free() for the case when phy_device*
returned by phy_device_create() is not registered in the system.

Bug description:
phy_device_create() sets name of kobject using dev_set_name(), which
allocates memory using kvasprintf(), but this memory isn't freed if
the underlying device isn't registered properly, because kobject_cleanup()
is not called in that case. This can happen (and actually is happening on
our machines) if phy_device_register(), called by mdiobus_scan(), fails.

Patch description:
Embedded struct device is initialized in phy_device_create() and it
counterpart phy_device_free() just drops one reference to the device,
which leads to proper deinitialization including releasing the kobject
name memory.

f9a8f83b04 net: phy: remove flags argument from phy_{attach, connect, connect_direct}
The flags argument of the phy_{attach,connect,connect_direct} functions
is then used to assign a struct phy_device dev_flags with its value.
All callers but the tg3 driver pass the flag 0, which results in the
underlying PHY drivers in drivers/net/phy/ not being able to actually
use any of the flags they would set in dev_flags. This patch gets rid of
the flags argument, and passes phydev->dev_flags to the internal PHY
library call phy_attach_direct() such that drivers which actually modify
a phy device dev_flags get the value preserved for use by the underlying
phy driver.

ac28b9f8cd netdev/phy: Handle IEEE802.3 clause 45 Ethernet PHYs
The IEEE802.3 clause 45 MDIO bus protocol allows for directly
addressing PHY registers using a 21 bit address, and is used by many
10G Ethernet PHYS.  Already existing is the ability of MDIO bus
drivers to use clause 45, with the MII_ADDR_C45 flag.  Here we add
struct phy_c45_device_ids to hold the device identifier registers
present in clause 45. struct phy_device gets a couple of new fields:
c45_ids to hold the identifiers and is_c45 to signal that it is clause
45.

get_phy_device() gets a new parameter is_c45 to indicate that the PHY
device should use the clause 45 protocol, and its callers are adjusted
to pass false.  The follow-on patch to of_mdio.c will pass true where
appropriate.

EXPORT phy_device_create() so that the follow-on patch to of_mdio.c
can use it to create phy devices for PHYs, that have non-standard
device identifier registers, based on the device tree bindings.

Here is why. Drivers store phydev in their private structures, e.g.
gianfar driver:

If the device has been opened before, then phydev->state is set to
PHY_HALTED (or undefined if the driver didn't call phy_stop()).

Now, phy_connect starts the PHY state machine before returning phydev to
the driver:

		phy_start_interrupts(phydev);

	return phydev;

The time between 'phy_start_machine()' and 'return phydev' is undefined.
The start machine routine delays execution for 1 second, which is enough
for most cases. But under heavy load, or if you're unlucky, it is quite
possible that PHY state machine will execute before phy_connect()
returns, and so adjust_link callback will try to dereference phydev,
which is not yet ready.

To fix the issue, simply initialize the PHY's state to PHY_READY during
phy_attach(). This will ensure that phylib won't call adjust_link before
phy_start().

c1f19b51d1 net: support time stamping in phy devices.
This patch adds a new networking option to allow hardware time stamps
from PHY devices. When enabled, likely candidates among incoming and
outgoing network packets are offered to the PHY driver for possible
time stamping. When accepted by the PHY driver, incoming packets are
deferred for later delivery by the driver.

The patch also adds phylib driver methods for the SIOCSHWTSTAMP ioctl
and callbacks for transmit and receive time stamping. Drivers may
optionally implement these functions.

We don't use the normal hotplug mechanism because it doesn't work. It will
load the module some time after the device appears, but that's not good
enough for us -- we need the driver loaded _immediately_ because otherwise
the NIC driver may just abort and then the phy 'device' goes away.

The oops pops up because TI DaVinci EMAC driver detaches PHY on
suspend and attaches it back on resume. Attaching makes phylib call
phy_start_machine() that initializes a workqueue. On the other hand,
PHY's resume routine will call phy_start_machine() again, and that
will cause the oops since we just destroyed the already scheduled
workqueue.

This patch fixes the issue by moving workqueue initialization to
phy_device_create().

p.s. We don't see this oops with ucc_geth and gianfar drivers because
they perform a fine-grained suspend, i.e. they just stop the PHYs
without detaching.
