06cc1a470a perf hists browser: Add parameter to disable lost event warning
For overwrite mode, the ringbuffer will be paused. The event lost is
expected. It needs a way to notify the browser not print the warning.

It will be used later for perf top to disable lost event warning in
overwrite mode. There is no behavior change for now.

b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier.  The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne.  Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed.  Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
   considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

   For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files

   and resulted in the first patch in this series.

   If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
   Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0".  Results of that was:

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one

   and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
   license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
   licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
   resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
   which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
   confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
   the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights.  The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
   files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
   was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction.  This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg.  Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected.  This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.)  Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

c4ee06251d perf report: Calculate the average cycles of iterations
The branch history code has a loop detection function. With this, we can
get the number of iterations by calculating the removed loops.

While it would be nice for knowing the average cycles of iterations.
This patch adds up the cycles in branch entries of removed loops and
save the result to the next branch entry (e.g. branch entry A).

Finally it will display the iteration number and average cycles at the
"from" of branch entry A.

8b8ef2d74d perf report: Enable finding kernel inline functions
Currently perf supports a mode to query inline stack. It works well for
finding user space inline functions but it doesn't work for kernel ones,
due to some unnecessary check.

This patch removes these unnecessary checks. Now kernel inline functions
can be reported.

For example:

  perf report --inline -g func --stdio

5dfa210e40 perf report: Enable sorting by srcline as key
Often it is interesting to know how costly a given source line is in
total. Previously, one had to build these sums manually based on all
addresses that pointed to the same source line. This patch introduces
srcline as a sort key, which will do the aggregation for us.

Paired with the recent addition of showing inline frames, this makes
perf report much more useful for many C++ work loads.

The following shows the new feature in action. First, let's show the
status quo output when we sort by address. The result contains many hist
entries that generate the same output:

If the branch is 100% predicted then the "predicted" is hidden.
Similarly, if there is no branch tsx abort, the "abort" is hidden.
There is only cycles shown (cycle is supported on skylake platform,

If no iterations, the "iterations" is hidden.

21e8c81095 perf hists browser: Dynamically change verbosity level
Here is a small patch which tries to fulfill a point in the perf todo
list:

* Make pressing 'V' multiple times to go on cycling thru various
  verbosity levels in 'perf top', so that info that is present in
  'perf top -v' can be obtained without having to restart the tool
  (acme).

After a small grep in the code, the max verbosity level seems 3; so,
we cycle at 4; I did not dare define a MAX_VERBOSE_LEVEL constant.

c611152373 perf top: Fix refreshing hierarchy entries on TUI
Markus reported that 'perf top --hierarchy' cannot scroll down after
refresh.  This was because the number of entries are not updated when
hierarchy is enabled.

Unlike normal report view, hierarchy mode needs to keep its own entry
count since it can have non-leaf entries which can expand/collapse.

d9ea48bc4e perf hists browser: Fix event group display
Milian reported that the event group on TUI shows duplicated overhead.
This was due to a bug on calculating hpp->buf position.  The
hpp_advance() was called from __hpp__slsmg_color_printf() on TUI but
it's already called from the hpp__call_print_fn macro in __hpp__fmt().
The end result is that the print function returns number of bytes it
printed but the buffer advanced twice of the length.

This is generally not a problem since it doesn't need to access the
buffer again.  But with event group, overhead needs to be printed
multiple times and hist_entry__snprintf_alignment() tries to fill the
space with buffer after it printed.  So it (brokenly) showed the last
overhead again.

The bug was there from the beginning, but I think it's only revealed
when the alignment function was added.

c8b5f2c96d tools: Introduce str_error_r()
The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that
returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else.

But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the
function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided
buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that
instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine
Linux, where musl libc is used.

So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU
interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that
users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is
returned.

9098903555 perf hists: Fix determination of a callchain node's childlessness
The 4b3a321223 ("perf hists browser: Support flat callchains") commit
over-aggressively tried to optimize callchain_node__init_have_children().

That lead to --tui mode not allowing to expand call chain elements if a
call chain element had only one parent. That's why --inverted callgraphs
looked halfway sane, but plain ones didn't.

Revert that individual optimization, it wasn't really related to the
rest of the commit.

The context menu in TUI hists browser checks corresponding sort keys
when creating the menu item.  But hotkey actions lacks these checks so
it can filter using incorrect info.

For example, default sort key of 'perf top' doesn't contain 'comm' or
'pid' sort key so each hist entry's thread info is not reliable.  Thus
it should prohibit using thread filter on 't' key.

The commit 2eafd410e6 ("perf hists browser: Only 'Zoom into thread'
only when sort order has 'pid'") disabled thread filtering in hist
browser for the default sort key.  However the he->thread is still valid
even if 'pid' sort key is not given.  Only thing it should not use is
the pid (or tid) of the thread.  So allow to filter by thread when
'comm' sort key is given and show pid only if 'pid' sort key is given.

The hist_browser__fprintf_hierarchy_entry() if to dump current output
into a file so it needs to be sync-ed with the corresponding function
hist_browser__show_hierarchy_entry().  So use hists->nr_hpp_node to
indent width and use first fmt_node to print overhead columns instead of
checking whether it's a sort entry (or dynamic entry).

d3a72fd818 perf report: Fix indentation of dynamic entries in hierarchy
When dynamic entries are used in the hierarchy mode with multiple
events, the output might not be aligned properly.  In the hierarchy
mode, the each sort column is indented using total number of sort keys.
So it keeps track of number of sort keys when adding them.  However
a dynamic sort key can be added more than once when multiple events have
same field names.  This results in unnecessarily long indentation in the
output.

For example perf kmem records following events:

'ptr' dynamic sort key alone will set nr_sort_keys to 6.  And this adds

f5b763feeb perf hists browser: Count number of hierarchy entries
Add nr_hierarchy_entries field to keep current number of (unfolded) hist
entries.  And the hist_entry->nr_rows carries number of direct children.
But in the hierarchy mode, entry can have grand children and callchains.
So update the number properly using hierarchy_count_rows() when toggling
the folded state (by pressing ENTER key).

89fee70943 perf hists: Do column alignment on the format iterator
We were doing column alignment in the format function for each cell,
returning a string padded with spaces so that when the next column is
printed the cursor is at its column alignment.

This ends up needlessly printing trailing spaces, do it at the format
iterator, that is where we know if it is needed, i.e. if there is more
columns to be printed.

This eliminates the need for triming lines when doing a dump using 'P'
in the TUI browser and also produces far saner results with things like
piping 'perf report' to 'less'.

Right now only the formatters for sym->name and the 'locked' column
(perf mem report), that are the ones that end up at the end of lines
in the default 'perf report', 'perf top' and 'perf mem report' tools,
the others will be done in a subsequent patch.

In the end the 'width' parameter for the formatters now mean, in
'printf' terms, the 'precision', where before it was the field 'width'.

59c624e239 perf hists browser: Fix percent display in callchains
When there's only a single callchain, perf doesn't print its percentage
in front of the symbols.  This is because it assumes that the percentage
is same as parents.  But if a percent limit is applied, it's possible
that there are actually a couple of child nodes but only one of them is
shown.  In this case it should display the percent to prevent
misunderstanding of its percentage is same as the parent's.

For example, let's see the following callchain.

  $ perf report --no-children --percent-limit 0.01 --tui
  ...
  -    0.06%  sleep    [kernel.vmlinux]    [k] kmem_cache_alloc_trace
       kmem_cache_alloc_trace
     - perf_event_mmap
        - 0.04% mmap_region
             do_mmap_pgoff
           - vm_mmap_pgoff
              + 0.02% sys_mmap_pgoff
              + 0.02% vm_mmap
           + 0.02% mprotect_fixup

Current code omits the percent if 'mmap_region' becomes the only node
when percent limit is set to 0.03%, its percent is not 0.06% but users
will assume it incorrectly.

Before:

  $ perf report --no-children --percent-limit 0.03 --tui
  ...
     0.06%  sleep    [kernel.vmlinux]    [k] kmem_cache_alloc_trace
       kmem_cache_alloc_trace

4056132e10 perf hists browser: Offer non-symbol specific menu options for --sort without 'sym'
Now that we check more strictly what each of the menu entries need, we
can stop bailing out when 'sym' is not in the --sort order, instead we
let each option be added if what it needs is present.

This way, for instance, we can run scripts on all samples, see DSO map
details when 'dso' is in the --sort provided, etc.

With the following steps:

 Step 2: Use UP/DOWN to select an entry, don't press 'ENTER'

 Step 3: Use '/' to filter symbols, use a filter which returns
         empty result

 Step 4: Press 'ENTER'

We see that, even if we have filtered all the symbols (and the main
interface is empty), pressing 'ENTER' still selects one symbol. This
behavior surprises the user.

This patch resets browser->{he_,}selection in hist_browser__refresh()
and lets it choose default selection. In this case
browser->{he_,}selection keeps NULL so user won't see annotation item in
menu.

0390504825 perf hists browser: Update nr entries regardless of min percent
When perf report on TUI was called with -S symbol filter, it should
update nr entries even if min_pcnt is 0.  IIRC the reason was to update
nr entries after applying minimum percent threshold.  But if symbol
filter was given on command line (with -S option), it should use
hists->nr_non_filtered_entries instead of hists->nr_entries.

So this patch fixes a bug of navigating hists browser that the cursor
goes beyond the number of entries when -S (or similar) option is used.

The folded callchain mode prints all chains in a single line.

Currently perf report --tui doesn't support folded callchains.  Like
flat callchains, only leaf nodes are added to the final rbtree so it
should show entries in parent nodes.  To do that, add flat_val list to
struct callchain_node and show them along with the (normal) val list.

For example, folded callchain looks like below:

hierarchy so make it easy to see.

With horizontal scrolling, the left/right arrow keys are used to scroll
columns and ENTER/ESC keys are used to enter/exit menu.  However if
callchain is recorded, the ENTER key is used to toggle callchain
expansion so there's no way to display menu.  Use 'm' key to display the
menu for this case.

c6c3c02dea perf hists browser: Implement horizontal scrolling
Do it using the recently introduced ui_brower scrolling mode, setting
ui_browser.columns to the number of sort columns and then, when
rendering each line, skipping as many initial columns as the user
pressed the right arrow.

As the user presses the left arrow, the ui_browser code will remove the
scrolling counter and the left scrolling takes place.

The right arrow key was an alias for ENTER, so people used to press it
may get a bit annoyed at first, sorry! Ditto for ESC and the left key.

Callchains can be left as is or we can, when rendering the Symbol
column, store the at what position on the screen it is and then
using ui_browser__gotorc() to print it from there, i.e. the callchain
would move around with the symbol.

Leaving it as is, i.e. at a fixed position, close to the left, saves
precious screen real state for it, so I'm inclined to leave it as is
now.

--symbols, etc, i.e. things marked as filtered in the symbol resolution
routines (thread__find_addr_map(), perf_event__preprocess_sample(),
etc).

But then, in:

We don't take into account entries that were filtered in
perf_event__preprocess_sample() and friends, which leads to
inconsistency in the browser seek routines, that expects the number of
hist_entry->filtered entries to match what it thinks is the number of
unfiltered, browsable entries.

So, for instance, when we do:

  perf top --symbols ___non_existent_symbol___

the hist_browser__nr_entries() routine thinks there are no filters in
place, uses the hists->nr_entries but all entries are filtered, leading
to a segfault.

Tested with:

   perf top --symbols malloc,free --percentage=relative

Freezing, by pressing 'f', at any time and doing the math on the
percentages ends up with 100%, ditto for:

   perf top --dsos libpthread-2.20.so,libxul.so --percentage=relative

Both were segfaulting, all fixed now.

More work needed to do away with checking if filters are in place, we
should just use the nr_non_filtered_samples counter, no need to
conditionally use it or hists.nr_filter, as what the browser does is
just show unfiltered stuff. An audit of how it is being accounted is
needed, this is the minimal fix.

13d1e536b1 perf top: Move toggling event logic into hists browser
Current 'f' key action to enable/disable events won't work if there're
more than one event since perf_evsel_menu__run() doesn't return the key.
So move it to the hists browser loop so that it can be processed as like
other key action, and it's more natural to handle it there IMHO.

5f00b0f45b perf hists browser: Honour the help line provided by builtin-{top,report}.c
The hists_browser was replacing whatever helpline provided by 'top' or
'report' with a static "Press '?' for help on key bindings", fix it.

Now the message passed by top appears at the bottom of the screen:

"For a higher level overview, try: perf top --sort comm,dso"

As well the message that will be added when the user presses 'f' to
disable the events, something along the lines of "press f again to
re-enable...".

The 'f' hotkey is only used when in 'top', dynamic mode, to
enable/disable events, currently not making sense in the 'report',
static mode, where we can't go from showing the histogram entries
created from a perf.data file to adding more events after recreating the
evlist created from the perf.data file, albeit possible, this is not
implemented right now.

5d484f99ae perf top: Allow disabling/enabling events dynamicly
Now it is possible to press CTRL+z at anytime and that will disable the
events being monitored, essentially turning 'top' into 'report', with
pressing CTRL+z again making it enable the events again, returning to
the 'top' behaviour, i.e. dynamic + decaying of older samples.

One may want, for instance, play with:

    -d, --delay <n>       number of seconds to delay between refreshes

and:

    -z, --zero            zero history across updates

Plus CTRL+z to see only the events since last zeroing, etc.

ed42691590 perf tools: Make Ctrl-C stop processing on TUI
It was inconvenient that perf cannot be quit with SIGINT during
processing samples on TUI especially for large data files.

This was because the first argument of SLang_init_tty(), abort_char,
being 0.  The manual says it's the ascii value of the control character
that will be used to generate the interrupt signal [1].  Passing -1
means to use the default value (Ctrl-C).

However, after processing samples, Ctrl-C was used to in other cases as
well - like stepping back from annotate.  So recover the original
behavior after processing.

ea7cd59233 perf hists browser: Split popup menu actions - part 2
Currently perf_evsel__hists_browse() function spins on a huge loop and
handles many key actions.  Since it's hard to read and modify, let's
split it out into small helper functions.

The add_XXX_opt() functions are to register popup menu item on the
selected entry.  When it adds an item, it also saves related data into
struct popup_action and returns 1 so that it can increase the number of
items (nr_options).

With this change, we can simplify the code just to call selected
callback function without considering various conditions.  A callback
function named do_XXX is called with saved data when the item is
selected by user.

No functional change intended.

f3b623b849 perf tools: Reference count struct thread
We need to do that to stop accumulating entries in the dead_threads
linked list, i.e. we were keeping references to threads in struct hists
that continue to exist even after a thread exited and was removed from
the machine threads rbtree.

We still keep the dead_threads list, but just for debugging, allowing us
to iterate at any given point over the threads that still are referenced
by things like struct hist_entry.

e641f696eb perf hists browser: Change print format from %lu to %PRIu64
The nr_events variable in tools/perf/ui/browsers/hists.c is of type u64,
so the print format (%lu) causes 'perf report' to show 0 event count
when running with 32-bit userspace without redirection.

This patch fixes that problem by printing nr_events as PRIu64.

Currently perf report on TUI doesn't print percent for first-level
callchain entry.

I guess it (wrongly) assumes that there's only a single callchain in the
first level.

This patch fixes it by handling the first level callchains same as
others - if it's not 100% it should print the percent value.

Also it'll affect other callchains in the other way around - if it's
100% (single callchain) it should not print the percentage.

c09a7e755c perf hists browser: Cleanup callchain print functions
The hist_browser__show_callchain() and friends don't need to be that
complex.  They're splitted in 3 pieces - one for traversing top-level
tree, other one for special casing first chains in the top-level
entries, and last one for recursive traversing inner trees.  It led to
code duplication and unnecessary complexity IMHO.

Simplify the function and consolidate the logic into a single function
- it can recursively call itself.  A little difference in printing
  callchains in top-level tree can be handled with a small change.

It should have no functional change.
