When calculating max_physmem, we've already factored in the space
used by iomem. We don't need to subtract it again.

It was added to support highmem. But since the highmem support has
been removed by commit a98a6d864d ("um: Remove broken highmem
support"), it is no longer needed. Remove it to simplify the code.

BLK_MQ_F_SHOULD_MERGE is set for all tag_sets except those that purely
process passthrough commands (bsg-lib, ufs tmf, various nvme admin
queues) and thus don't even check the flag. Remove it to simplify the
driver interface.

The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and
is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member
function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a
comment to that effect:

* New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are
* converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped.

This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with
'.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs
to make things line up.
I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used
spaces to line things up.
Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this
is the end result. No more unnecessary conversion noise.

This selects the THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK option for UM and changes the way
that the current task is discovered. This is trivial though, as UML
already tracks the current task in cpu_tasks[] and this can be used to
retrieve it.
Also remove the signal handler code that copies the thread information
into the IRQ stack. It is obsolete now, which also means that the
mentioned race condition cannot happen anymore.

When module text memory will be allocated with ROX permissions, the memory
at the actual address where the module will live will contain invalid
instructions and there will be a writable copy that contains the actual
module code.
Update relocations and alternatives patching to deal with it.

Several architectures support text patching, but they name the header
files that declare patching functions differently.
Make all such headers consistently named text-patching.h and add an empty
header in asm-generic for architectures that do not support text patching.

Currently, show_stack() always dumps the trace of the current task.
However, it should dump the trace of the specified task if one is
provided. Otherwise, things like running "echo t > sysrq-trigger"
won't work as expected.

When the VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_MQ protocol feature flag is set, we can
query the maximum number of virtual queues. Do so when supported and
extend the check to verify that we are not trying to allocate more
queues.

If the device does not support slave requests, then the IRQ will not yet
be allocated. So initialize the IRQ to UM_IRQ_ALLOC so that it will be
allocated if none has been assigned yet and store it slightly later when
we know that it will not be immediately unregistered again.

The show_stack function had some code to detect double faults. However,
the logic is wrong and it would e.g. trigger if a WARNING happened
inside an IRQ.
Remove it without trying to add a new logic. The current behaviour,
which will just fault repeatedly until the IRQ stack is used up and the
host kills UML, seems to be good enough.

__pa() is only intended to be used for linear map addresses and using
it for initial_boot_params which is in fixmap for arm64 will give an
incorrect value. Hence save the physical address when it is known at
boot time when calling early_init_dt_scan for arm64 and use it at kexec
time instead of converting the virtual address using __pa().
Note that arm64 doesn't need the FDT region reserved in the DT as the
kernel explicitly reserves the passed in FDT. Therefore, only a debug
warning is fixed with this change.

page_to_phys is duplicated by all architectures, and from some strange
reason placed in <asm/io.h> where it doesn't fit at all.
phys_to_page is only provided by a few architectures despite having a lot
of open coded users.
Provide generic versions in <asm-generic/memory_model.h> to make these
helpers more easily usable.
Note with this patch powerpc loses the CONFIG_DEBUG_VIRTUAL pfn_valid
check. It will be added back in a generic version later.

CONFIG_GCOV is special and only in UML since it builds the
kernel with a "userspace" option. This is fine, but the stub
is even more special and not really a full userspace process,
so it then fails to link as reported.
Remove the GCOV options from the stub build.
For good measure, also remove the GPROF options, even though
they don't seem to cause build failures now.
To be able to do this, export the specific options (GCOV_OPT
and GPROF_OPT) but rename them so there's less chance of any
conflicts.

Evidently, PATH_MAX isn't always defined, at least not via <limits.h>.
Simply remove the use and replace it by a constant 4k. As stat::st_size
is zero for /proc/self/exe we can't even size it automatically, and it
seems unlikely someone's going to try to run UML with such a path.

The PTRACE_GETREGSET API has now existed since Linux 2.6.33. The XSAVE
CPU feature should also be sufficiently common to be able to rely on it.
With this, define our internal FP state to be the hosts XSAVE data. Add
discovery for the hosts XSAVE size and place the FP registers at the end
of task_struct so that we can adjust the size at runtime.
Next we can implement the regset API on top and update the signal
handling as well as ptrace APIs to use them. Also switch coredump
creation to use the regset API and finally set HAVE_ARCH_TRACEHOOK.
This considerably improves the signal frames. Previously they might not
have contained all the registers (i386) and also did not have the
sizes and magic values set to the correct values to permit userspace to
decode the frame.
As a side effect, this will permit UML to run on hosts with newer CPU
extensions (such as AMX) that need even more register state.

In time-travel mode userspace can do a lot of work without any time
passing. Unfortunately, this can result in OOM situations as the RCU
core code will never be run.
Work around this by keeping track of userspace processes that do not
yield for a lot of operations. When this happens, insert a jiffie into
the sched_clock clock to account time against the process and cause the
bookkeeping to run.
As sched_clock is used for tracing, it is useful to keep it in sync
between the different VMs. As such, try to remove added ticks again when
the actual clock ticks.

When a PTE is updated in the page table, the _PAGE_NEWPAGE bit will
always be set. And the corresponding page will always be mapped or
unmapped depending on whether the PTE is present or not. The check
on the _PAGE_NEWPROT bit is not really reachable. Abandoning it will
allow us to simplify the code and remove the unreachable code.

This was perhaps intended to do _nofault copies, but the
real reason is lost to history. Remove this, it's not
needed, and using longjmp() out of the middle of the
signal handler with all the state it has modified is
not going to be a good idea anyway.

After the execve() to disable ASLR, comm is now "exe",
which is a bit confusing. Use readlink() to get this
to the right name again.
Disable stack frame size warnings on main.o since it's
part of the initial userspace and can use larger stack.

Since __attribute__((naked)) cannot be used with functions
containing C statements, just generate the few instructions
it needs in assembly directly.
While at it, fix the stack usage ("1 + 2*x - 1" is odd) and
document what it must do, and why it must adjust the stack.

The stub_exe could segfault when built with some compilers (e.g. gcc
13.2.0), as SSE instructions which relied on stack alignment could be
generated, but the stack was misaligned.
This seems to be due to the __start entry point being run with a 16-byte
aligned stack, but the x86_64 SYSV ABI wanting the stack to be so
aligned _before_ a function call (so it is misaligned when the function
is entered due to the return address being pushed). The function
prologue then realigns it. Because the entry point is never _called_,
and hence there is no return address, the prologue is therefore actually
misaligning it, and causing the generated movaps instructions to
SIGSEGV. This results in the following error:
start_userspace : expected SIGSTOP, got status = 139
Don't generate this prologue for __start by using
__attribute__((naked)), which resolves the issue.

When automatic variable initialization is enabled via
CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL_{PATTERN,ZERO}, clang will insert a call to
memset() to initialize an object created with __builtin_alloca(). This
ultimately breaks the build when linking stub_exe because it is a
standalone executable that does not include or link against memset().

Disable automatic variable initialization for stub_exe.c by passing the
default value of 'uninitialized' to '-ftrivial-auto-var-init', which
avoids generating the call to memset(). This code is small and runs
quickly as it is just designed to set up an environment, so stack
variable initialization is unnecessary overhead for little gain.

When building stub_exe with clang, there is an error because '-n' is not
a recognized flag by the clang driver (which is being used to invoke the
linker):
clang: error: unknown argument: '-n'
'-n' should be passed along to the linker, as it is the short flag for
'--nmagic', so prefix it with '-Wl,'.

UML. One example for this is ASAN instrumentation of userspace
applications which requires addresses that would otherwise not be

With the change to use execve() we can now safely clear the memory up to
STUB_START as rseq will not be trying to use memory in that region. Also,
on 64 bit the previous changes should mean that there is no usable
memory range above the stub.
Make the change and remove the comment as it is not needed anymore.

When loading the UML binary, the host kernel will place the stack at the
highest possible address. It will then map the program name and
environment variables onto the start of the stack.
As such, an easy way to figure out the host_task_size is to use the
highest pointer to an environment variable as a reference.
Ensure that this works by disabling address layout randomization and
re-executing UML in case it was enabled.
This increases the available TASK_SIZE for 64 bit UML considerably.

We may have a TASK_SIZE from the host that is bigger than UML is able to
address with a three-level pagetable on 64-bit. Guard against that by
clipping the maximum TASK_SIZE to the maximum addressable area.

Instead of using the current stack pointer, we can also use the current
instruction to calculate where the stub data is. With this the stub data
only needs to be aligned to a full page boundary.
Changing this has the advantage that we do not have a hole in the memory
space above the stub data (which would need to be explicitly cleared).
Another motivation to do this is that with the planned addition of a
SECCOMP based userspace the stack pointer may not be fully trustworthy.

The winch "thread" is really a separate process. Using prctl to set
PR_SET_PDEATHSIG ensures that this separate thread will be killed if the
UML kernel itself dies unexpectedly and does not perform proper cleanup.

Using clone will not undo features that have been enabled by libc. An
example of this already happening is rseq, which could cause the kernel
to read/write memory of the userspace process. In the future the
standard library might also use mseal by default to protect itself,
which would also thwart our attempts at unmapping everything.
Solve all this by taking a step back and doing an execve into a tiny
static binary that sets up the minimal environment required for the
stub without using any standard library. That way we have a clean
execution environment that is fully under the control of UML.
Note that this changes things a bit as the FDs are not anymore shared
with the kernel. Instead, we explicitly share the FDs for the physical
memory and all existing iomem regions. Doing this is fine, as iomem
regions cannot be added at runtime.

We do not need the extra save/restore of the FP registers when getting
the fault information. This was originally added in commit 2f56debd77
("uml: fix FP register corruption") but at that time the code was not
saving/restoring the FP registers when switching to userspace. This was
fixed in commit fbfe9c847e ("um: Save FPU registers between task
switches") and since then the auxiliary registers have not been useful.

In the submitted patch set [1], the first patch "um/kconfig: introduce
CC_CAN_LINK_STATIC_NO_RUNTIME_DEPS" was not applied.
Only 2/3 and 3/3 were applied, which are now:

- 5e1121cd43 ("um: Some fixes to build UML with musl")
Given that nobody has noticed the missing first patch for many years,
it seems it was unnecessary.

When switching from userspace to the kernel, all registers including the
FP registers are copied into the kernel and restored later on. As such,
the true source for the FP register state is actually already in the
kernel and they should never be grabbed from the userspace process.
Change the various places to simply copy the data from the internal FP
register storage area. Note that on i386 the format of PTRACE_GETFPREGS
and PTRACE_GETFPXREGS is different enough that conversion would be
needed. With this patch, -EINVAL is returned if the non-native format is
requested.
The upside is, that this patchset fixes setting registers via ptrace
(which simply did not work before) as well as fixing setting floating
point registers using the mcontext on signal return on i386.

Currently physmem_size is defined as long long but declared locally
as unsigned long long before using it in separate .c files. Make them
match by defining physmem_size as unsigned long long and also move
the declaration to a common header to allow the compiler to check it.

The schedule() call there really never did anything at
least since the introduction of the EEVDF scheduler,
but now I found a case where we permanently hang in a
loop of -ERESTARTNOINTR (due to locking.) Work around
it by making any syscalls with error return take time
(and then schedule after) so we cannot hang in such a
loop forever.

UML vector drivers use ring buffer structures which map
preallocated skbs onto mmsg vectors for use with sendmmsg
and recvmmsg. They are designed around a single consumer,
single producer pattern allowing simultaneous enqueue and
dequeue.
Lock debugging with preemption showed possible races when
locking the queue depth. This patch addresses this by
removing extra locks, adding barriers and making queue
depth inc/dec and access atomic.

When generalizing this, I was in the mindset of this being
"userspace" code, but even there we should not use variable
arrays as the kernel is moving away from allowing that.
Simply reserve (but not use) enough space for the maximum
two descriptors we might need now, and return an error if
attempting to receive more than that.

This just standardizes the use of MIN() and MAX() macros, with the very
traditional semantics. The goal is to use these for C constant
expressions and for top-level / static initializers, and so be able to
simplify the min()/max() macros.
These macro names were used by various kernel code - they are very
traditional, after all - and all such users have been fixed up, with a
few different approaches:
- trivial duplicated macro definitions have been removed
Note that 'trivial' here means that it's obviously kernel code that
already included all the major kernel headers, and thus gets the new
generic MIN/MAX macros automatically.
- non-trivial duplicated macro definitions are guarded with #ifndef
This is the "yes, they define their own versions, but no, the include
situation is not entirely obvious, and maybe they don't get the
generic version automatically" case.
- strange use case #1
A couple of drivers decided that the way they want to describe their
versioning is with
#define MAJ 1
#define MIN 2
#define DRV_VERSION __stringify(MAJ) "." __stringify(MIN)
which adds zero value and I just did my Alexander the Great
impersonation, and rewrote that pointless Gordian knot as
#define DRV_VERSION "1.2"
instead.
- strange use case #2
A couple of drivers thought that it's a good idea to have a random
'MIN' or 'MAX' define for a value or index into a table, rather than
the traditional macro that takes arguments.
These values were re-written as C enum's instead. The new
function-line macros only expand when followed by an open
parenthesis, and thus don't clash with enum use.
Happily, there weren't really all that many of these cases, and a lot of
users already had the pattern of using '#ifndef' guarding (or in one
case just using '#undef MIN') before defining their own private version
that does the same thing. I left such cases alone.

kmsg_dump doesn't forward the panic reason string to the kmsg_dumper
callback.
This patch adds a new struct kmsg_dump_detail, that will hold the
reason and description, and pass it to the dump() callback.
To avoid updating all kmsg_dump() call, it adds a kmsg_dump_desc()
function and a macro for backward compatibility.
I've written this for drm_panic, but it can be useful for other
kmsg_dumper.
It allows to see the panic reason, like "sysrq triggered crash"
or "VFS: Unable to mount root fs on xxxx" on the drm panic screen.

UML should not be using the architecture native runtime constants, since
that requires also having the appropriate instruction fixups (and all
the linker script details).
Not that using that code would be impossible, but it's not worth it.
Just point UML at the generic version.

If we start validating the existence of the asm-generic side of
generated headers, this one causes a warning:

The problem is that the asm-generic header only exists for the uapi
variant, but arch/um has no uapi headers and instead uses the x86
userspace API.
Add a custom file with an explicit redirect to avoid this.

If open fails, we have already set vp->opened, but it's
not reset so that any further attempts will just return
-ENXIO. Reset vp->opened even if close has nothing to do.
This helps e.g. with slirp4netns handling only a single
connection, you can then restart it and open the device
again.

Since userspace state is saved in the MM process, kernel using
FPU still doesn't really need to do anything, so this really
is as simple as enabling preemption. The irq critical section
in sigio_handler() needs preempt_disable()/preempt_enable().

Conceptually, we want the memory mappings to always be up to date and
represent whatever is in the TLB. To ensure that, we need to sync them
over in the userspace case and for the kernel we need to process the
mappings.
The kernel will call flush_tlb_* if page table entries that were valid
before become invalid. Unfortunately, this is not the case if entries
are added.
As such, change both flush_tlb_* and set_ptes to track the memory range
that has to be synchronized. For the kernel, we need to execute a
flush_tlb_kern_* immediately but we can wait for the first page fault in
case of set_ptes. For userspace in contrast we only store that a range
of memory needs to be synced and do so whenever we switch to that
process.

The HVC update was mostly used to compress consecutive calls into one.
This is mostly relevant for userspace where it is already handled by the
syscall stub code.
Simplify the whole logic and consolidate it for both kernel and
userspace. This does remove the sequential syscall compression for the
kernel, however that shouldn't be the main factor in most runs.

There should be no need to flush the memory in flush_thread. Doing this
likely worked around some issue where memory was still incorrectly
mapped when creating or cloning an MM.
With the removal of the special clone path, that isn't relevant anymore.
However, add the flush into MM initialization so that any new userspace
MM is guaranteed to be clean.

As running the syscalls is expensive due to context switches, we should
do so as late as possible in case more syscalls need to be queued later
on. This will also benefit a later move to a SECCOMP enabled userspace
as in that case the need for extra context switches is removed entirely.

The current LDT code has a few issues that mean it should be redone in a
different way once we always start with a fresh MM even when cloning.
In a new and better world, the kernel would just ensure its own LDT is
clear at startup. At that point, all that is needed is a simple function
to populate the LDT from another MM in arch_dup_mmap combined with some
tracking of the installed LDT entries for each MM.
Note that the old implementation was even incorrect with regard to
reading, as it copied out the LDT entries in the internal format rather
than converting them to the userspace structure.
Removal should be fine as the LDT is not used for thread-local storage
anymore.

Rework syscall handling to be platform independent. Also create a clean
split between queueing of syscalls and flushing them out, removing the
need to keep state in the code that triggers the syscalls.
The code adds syscall_data_len to the global mm_id structure. This will
be used later to allow surrounding code to track whether syscalls still
need to run and if errors occurred.

When we switch to use seccomp, we need both the signal stack and other
data (i.e. syscall information) to co-exist in the stub data. To
facilitate this, start by defining separate memory areas for the stack
and syscall data.
This moves the signal stack onto a new page as the memory area is not
sufficient to hold both signal stack and syscall information.
Only change the signal stack setup for now, as the syscall code will be
reworked later.

When signals are hard-blocked in order to do time-travel
socket processing, we set signals_blocked and then handle
SIGIO signals by setting the SIGIO bit in signals_pending.
When unblocking, we first set signals_blocked to 0, and
then handle all pending signals. We have to set it first,
so that we can again properly block/unblock inside the
unblock, if the time-travel handlers need to be processed.

Conceptually, to fix this, we need to ensure that the
signal handler cannot run while we hard-unblock signals.
The thing that makes this more complex is that we can be
doing hard-block/unblock while unblocking. Introduce a
new signals_blocked_pending variable that we can keep at
non-zero as long as pending signals are being processed,
then we only need to ensure it's decremented safely and
the signal handler will only increment it if it's already
non-zero (or signals_blocked is set, of course.)
Note also that only the outermost call to hard-unblock is
allowed to decrement signals_blocked_pending, since it
could otherwise reach zero in an inner call, and leave
the same race happening if the timetravel_handler loops,
but that's basically required of it.

With external time travel, a LOT of message can end up
being exchanged on the socket, taking a significant
amount of time just to do that.
Add a new shared memory optimisation to that, where a
number of changes are made:
- the controller sends a client ID and a shared memory FD
(and a logging FD we don't use) in the ACK message to
the initial START
- the shared memory holds the current time and the
free_until value, so that there's no need to exchange
messages for that
- if the client that's running has shared memory support,
any client (the running one included) can request the
next time it wants to run inside the shared memory,
rather than sending a message, by also updating the
free_until value
- when shared memory is enabled, RUN/WAIT messages no
longer have an ACK, further cutting down on messages
Together, this can reduce the number of messages very
significantly, and reduce overall test/simulation run time.

Add a message type to the time-travel protocol to broadcast
a small (64-bit) value to all participants in a simulation.
The main use case is to have an identical message come to
all participants in a simulation, e.g. to separate out logs
for different tests running in a single simulation.
Down in the guts of time_travel_handle_message() we can't
use printk() and not even printk_deferred(), so just store
the message and print it at the start of the userspace()
function.
Unfortunately this means that other prints in the kernel
can actually bypass the message, but in most cases where
this is used, for example to separate test logs, userspace
will be involved. Also, even if we could use
printk_deferred(), we'd still need to flush it out in the
userspace() function since otherwise userspace messages
might cross it.
As a result, this is a reasonable compromise, there's no
need to have any core changes and it solves the main use
case we have for it.

Current calculation of max_low_pfn is introduced in commit af84eab208
("[PATCH] uml: fix LVM crash"). It is intended to set max_low_pfn to the
same value as max_pfn.
But I am not sure why the max_pfn is set to totalram_pages, which
represents the number of usable pages in system instead of an absolute
page frame number. (The change history stops there.)
While we have already calculate it in setup_physmem(), so not necessary
to do it again.
Also this would help changing totalram_pages accounting, since we plan
to move the accounting into __free_pages_core(). With this change,
totalram_pages may not represent the total usable pages at this point,
since some pages would be deferred initialized.

At present, Rust in the kernel only supports 64-bit x86, so UML has
followed suit. However, it's significantly easier to support 32-bit i386
on UML than on bare metal, as UML does not use the -mregparm option
(which alters the ABI), which is not yet supported by rustc[1].
Add support for CONFIG_RUST on um/i386, by adding a new target config to
generate_rust_target, and replacing various checks on CONFIG_X86_64 to
also support CONFIG_X86_32.
We still use generate_rust_target, rather than a built-in rustc target,
in order to match x86_64, provide a future place for -mregparm, and more
easily disable floating point instructions.
With these changes, the KUnit tests pass with:
kunit.py run --make_options LLVM=1 --kconfig_add CONFIG_RUST=y
--kconfig_add CONFIG_64BIT=n --kconfig_add CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE=n
An earlier version of these changes was proposed on the Rust-for-Linux

Currently /proc/sysemu will never be registered, as sysemu_supported
is initialized to zero implicitly and no code updates it. And there is
also nothing to configure via sysemu in UML anymore.

In a future patch HAS_IOPORT=n will disable inb()/outb() and friends at
compile time. UML supports these via its UML_IOMEM_EMULATION so let that
select HAS_IOPORT and also reflect this in NO_IOPORT_MAP.

Remove the pcap driver in UML. It is obsolete. It does not build on
recent systems due to changes in libpcap and its dependencies.
The vector driver's raw transport in UML provides identical
functionality.

When in time-travel mode (infinite-cpu or external) time should not pass
for writing to the console. As such, it makes sense to put the FD for
the output side into blocking mode and simply let any write to it hang.
If we did not do this, then time could pass waiting for the console to
become writable again. This is not desirable as it has random effects on
the clock between runs.
Implement this by duplicating the FD if output is active in a relevant
mode and setting the duplicate to be blocking. This avoids changing the
input channel to be blocking should it exists. After this, use the
blocking FD for all write operations and do not allocate an IRQ it is
set.
Without time-travel mode fd_out will always match fd_in and IRQs are
registered.

In the next commit, we are going to set the output FD to be blocking.
Once that is done, the write() may be short if an interrupt happens
while it is writing out data. As such, to properly catch an EINTR error,
we need to retry the write.

If the read/write function returns an error then we expect to see an
event/IRQ later on. However, this will only happen after an EAGAIN as we
are using edge based event triggering.
As such, EINTR needs to be caught should it happen.

When in time-travel mode, the eventfd events are read even when signals
are blocked as SIGIO still needs to be processed. In this case, the
event is cleared on the eventfd but the IRQ still needs to be fired
later.
We did already ensure that the SIGIO handler is run again. However, the
FDs are configured to be level triggered, so that eventfd will not
notify again. As such, add some logic to mark the IRQ as pending and
process it at the next opportunity.
To avoid duplication, reuse the logic used for the suspend/resume case.
This does not really change anything except for delaying running the
IRQs with timetravel_handler at a slightly later point in time (and
possibly running non-timetravel IRQs that shouldn't happen earlier).
While at it, move marking as pending into irq_event_handler as that is
the more logical place for it to happen.
