b555cb6658 um: vector: Eliminate the dependency on uml_net
The only dependency on uml_net (i.e., the legacy network transport
infrastructure) is the call to uml_net_setup_etheraddr(). Implement
it inside vector to eliminate the uml_net dependency completely. It
will allow us to remove uml_net in the next step.

65eaac591b um: Remove obsolete legacy network transports
These legacy network transports were marked as obsolete in commit
40814b98a5 ("um: Mark non-vector net transports as obsolete").
More than five years have passed since then. Remove these network
transports to reduce the maintenance burden.

a0e2cb6a90 um: Add VFIO-based virtual PCI driver
Implement a new virtual PCI driver based on the VFIO framework.
This driver allows users to pass through PCI devices to UML via
VFIO. Currently, only MSI-X capable devices are supported, and
it is assumed that drivers will use MSI-X.

6767e8784c um: use proper care when taking mmap lock during segfault
Segfaults can occur at times where the mmap lock cannot be taken. If
that happens the segfault handler may not be able to take the mmap lock.

Fix the code to use the same approach as most other architectures.
Unfortunately, this requires copying code from mm/memory.c and modifying
it slightly as UML does not have exception tables.

49caacf100 um: do not send SIGALRM to userspace in time-travel mode
We send a SIGALRM to userspace processes to interrupt them. Really,
doing so is only needed if they are actually executing at the time (to
ensure we return to kernelspace). Unfortunately, we do not have that
information readily available. We can however be sure that this is never
the case when we are in time-travel mode with infinite CPU.

68025adfc1 um: fix _nofault accesses
Nathan reported [1] that when built with clang, the um kernel
crashes pretty much immediately. This turned out to be an issue
with the inline assembly I had added, when clang used %rax/%eax
for both operands. Reorder it so current->thread.segv_continue
is written first, and then the lifetime of _faulted won't have
overlap with the lifetime of segv_continue.

In the email thread Benjamin also pointed out that current->mm
is only NULL for true kernel tasks, but we could do this for a
userspace task, so the current->thread.segv_continue logic must
be lifted out of the mm==NULL check.

Finally, while looking at this, put a barrier() so the NULL
assignment to thread.segv_continue cannot be reorder before
the possibly faulting operation.

118c40b7b5 kbuild: require gcc-8 and binutils-2.30
Commit a3e8fe814a ("x86/build: Raise the minimum GCC version to 8.1")
raised the minimum compiler version as enforced by Kbuild to gcc-8.1
and clang-15 for x86.

This is actually the same gcc version that has been discussed as the
minimum for all architectures several times in the past, with little
objection. A previous concern was the kernel for SLE15-SP7 needing to
be built with gcc-7. As this ended up still using linux-6.4 and there
is no plan for an SP8, this is no longer a problem.

Change it for all architectures and adjust the documentation accordingly.
A few version checks can be removed in the process.  The binutils
version 2.30 is the lowest version used in combination with gcc-8 on
common distros, so use that as the corresponding minimum.

8fa7292fee treewide: Switch/rename to timer_delete[_sync]()
timer_delete[_sync]() replaces del_timer[_sync](). Convert the whole tree
over and remove the historical wrapper inlines.

e3ecf7c7d0 mm: pgtable: convert some architectures to use tlb_remove_ptdesc()
Now, the nine architectures of csky, hexagon, loongarch, m68k, mips,
nios2, openrisc, sh and um do not select CONFIG_MMU_GATHER_RCU_TABLE_FREE,
and just call pagetable_dtor() + tlb_remove_page_ptdesc() (the wrapper of
tlb_remove_page()).  This is the same as the implementation of
tlb_remove_{ptdesc|table}() under !CONFIG_MMU_GATHER_TABLE_FREE, so
convert these architectures to use tlb_remove_ptdesc().

The ultimate goal is to make the architecture only use tlb_remove_ptdesc()
or tlb_remove_table() for page table pages.

Uros Bizjak uses x86 named address space qualifiers to provide

   needed, but this makes thins better - our own HMM selftests now succeed.

   Ahmed remove the z3fold and zbud implementations.  They have been
   deprecated for half a year and nobody has complained.
 
 - The 5 patch series "mm: further simplify VMA merge operation" from
   Lorenzo Stoakes implements numerous simplifications in this area.  No
   runtime effects are anticipated.
 
 - The 4 patch series "mm/madvise: remove redundant mmap_lock operations
   from process_madvise()" from SeongJae Park rationalizes the locking in
   the madvise() implementation.  Performance gains of 20-25% were observed
   in one MADV_DONTNEED microbenchmark.
 
 - The 12 patch series "Tiny cleanup and improvements about SWAP code"
   from Baoquan He contains a number of touchups to issues which Baoquan
   noticed when working on the swap code.
 
 - The 2 patch series "mm: kmemleak: Usability improvements" from Catalin
   Marinas implements a couple of improvements to the kmemleak user-visible
   output.

   by huge page sizes.
 
 - The 4 patch series "mm: permit guard regions for file-backed/shmem
   mappings" from Lorenzo Stoakes extends the guard region feature from its
   present "anon mappings only" state.  The feature now covers shmem and
   file-backed mappings.
 
 - The 4 patch series "mm: batched unmap lazyfree large folios during
   reclamation" from Barry Song cleans up and speeds up the unmapping for
   pte-mapped large folios.
 
 - The 18 patch series "reimplement per-vma lock as a refcount" from
   Suren Baghdasaryan puts the vm_lock back into the vma.  Our reasons for
   pulling it out were largely bogus and that change made the code more
   messy.  This patchset provides small (0-10%) improvements on one
   microbenchmark.
 
 - The 5 patch series "Docs/mm/damon: misc DAMOS filters documentation
   fixes and improves" from SeongJae Park does some maintenance work on the
   DAMON docs.

 - The 8 patch series "mm/damon: auto-tune aggregation interval" from
   SeongJae Park implements a feedback-driven automatic tuning feature for
   DAMON's aggregation interval tuning.
 
 - The 5 patch series "Fix lazy mmu mode" from Ryan Roberts fixes some
   issues in powerpc, sparc and x86 lazy MMU implementations.  Ryan did
   this in preparation for implementing lazy mmu mode for arm64 to optimize
   vmalloc.
 
 - The 2 patch series "mm/page_alloc: Some clarifications for migratetype
   fallback" from Brendan Jackman reworks some commentary to make the code
   easier to follow.

33c9da5dfb um: Rewrite the sigio workaround based on epoll and tgkill
The existing sigio workaround implementation removes FDs from the
poll when events are triggered, requiring users to re-add them via
add_sigio_fd() after processing. This introduces a potential race
condition between FD removal in write_sigio_thread() and next_poll
update in __add_sigio_fd(), and is inefficient due to frequent FD
removal and re-addition. Rewrite the implementation based on epoll
and tgkill for improved efficiency and reliability.

887c5c12e8 um: work around sched_yield not yielding in time-travel mode
sched_yield by a userspace may not actually cause scheduling in
time-travel mode as no time has passed. In the case seen it appears to
be a badly implemented userspace spinlock in ASAN. Unfortunately, with
time-travel it causes an extreme slowdown or even deadlock depending on
the kernel configuration (CONFIG_UML_MAX_USERSPACE_ITERATIONS).

Work around it by accounting time to the process whenever it executes a
sched_yield syscall.

84a6fc3784 um: remove copy_from_kernel_nofault_allowed
There is no need to override the default version of this function
anymore as UML now has proper _nofault memory access functions.

Doing this also fixes the fact that the implementation was incorrect as
using mincore() will incorrectly flag pages as inaccessible if they were
swapped out by the host.

d1d7f01f7c um: mark rodata read-only and implement _nofault accesses
Mark read-only data actually read-only (simple mprotect), and
to be able to test it also implement _nofault accesses. This
works by setting up a new "segv_continue" pointer in current,
and then when we hit a segfault we change the signal return
context so that we continue at that address. The code using
this sets it up so that it jumps to a label and then aborts
the access that way, returning -EFAULT.

It's possible to optimize the ___backtrack_faulted() thing by
using asm goto (compiler version dependent) and/or gcc's (not
sure if clang has it) &&label extension, but at least in one
attempt I made the && caused the compiler to not load -EFAULT
into the register in case of jumping to the &&label from the
fault handler. So leave it like this for now.

8afa901c14 arch, mm: make releasing of memory to page allocator more explicit
The point where the memory is released from memblock to the buddy
allocator is hidden inside arch-specific mem_init()s and the call to
memblock_free_all() is needlessly duplicated in every artiste cure and
after introduction of arch_mm_preinit() hook, mem_init() implementation on
many architecture only contains the call to memblock_free_all().

Pull memblock_free_all() call into mm_core_init() and drop mem_init() on
relevant architectures to make it more explicit where the free memory is
released from memblock to the buddy allocator and to reduce code
duplication in architecture specific code.

0d98484ee3 arch, mm: introduce arch_mm_preinit
Currently, implementation of mem_init() in every architecture consists of
one or more of the following:

* initializations that must run before page allocator is active, for
  instance swiotlb_init()
* a call to memblock_free_all() to release all the memory to the buddy
  allocator
* initializations that must run after page allocator is ready and there is
  no arch-specific hook other than mem_init() for that, like for example
  register_page_bootmem_info() in x86 and sparc64 or simple setting of
  mem_init_done = 1 in several architectures
* a bunch of semi-related stuff that apparently had no better place to
  live, for example a ton of BUILD_BUG_ON()s in parisc.

Introduce arch_mm_preinit() that will be the first thing called from
mm_core_init(). On architectures that have initializations that must happen
before the page allocator is ready, move those into arch_mm_preinit() along
with the code that does not depend on ordering with page allocator setup.

On several architectures this results in reduction of mem_init() to a
single call to memblock_free_all() that allows its consolidation next.

e120d1bc12 arch, mm: set high_memory in free_area_init()
high_memory defines upper bound on the directly mapped memory.  This bound
is defined by the beginning of ZONE_HIGHMEM when a system has high memory
and by the end of memory otherwise.

All this is known to generic memory management initialization code that
can set high_memory while initializing core mm structures.

Add a generic calculation of high_memory to free_area_init() and remove
per-architecture calculation except for the architectures that set and use
high_memory earlier than that.

8268af309d arch, mm: set max_mapnr when allocating memory map for FLATMEM
max_mapnr is essentially the size of the memory map for systems that use
FLATMEM. There is no reason to calculate it in each and every architecture
when it's anyway calculated in alloc_node_mem_map().

Drop setting of max_mapnr from architecture code and set it once in
alloc_node_mem_map().

While on it, move definition of mem_map and max_mapnr to mm/mm_init.c so
there won't be two copies for MMU and !MMU variants.

f82a9e7b9f um: fix execve stub execution on old host OSs
The stub execution uses the somewhat new close_range and execveat
syscalls. Of these two, the execveat call is essential, but the
close_range call is more about stub process hygiene rather than safety
(and its result is ignored).

Replace both calls with a raw syscall as older machines might not have a
recent enough kernel for close_range (with CLOSE_RANGE_CLOEXEC) or a
libc that does not yet expose both of the syscalls.

8891b176d3 um: avoid copying FP state from init_task
The init_task instance of struct task_struct is statically allocated and
does not contain the dynamic area for the userspace FP registers. As
such, limit the copy to the valid area of init_task and fill the rest
with zero.

Note that the FP state is only needed for userspace, and as such it is
entirely reasonable for init_task to not contain it.

c6f239796b mm/memblock: add memblock_alloc_or_panic interface
Before SLUB initialization, various subsystems used memblock_alloc to
allocate memory.  In most cases, when memory allocation fails, an
immediate panic is required.  To simplify this behavior and reduce
repetitive checks, introduce `memblock_alloc_or_panic`.  This function
ensures that memory allocation failures result in a panic automatically,
improving code readability and consistency across subsystems that require
this behavior.

a9b3c355c2 asm-generic: pgalloc: provide generic __pgd_{alloc,free}
We already have a generic implementation of alloc/free up to P4D level, as
well as pgd_free().  Let's finish the work and add a generic PGD-level
alloc helper as well.

Unlike at lower levels, almost all architectures need some specific magic
at PGD level (typically initialising PGD entries), so introducing a
generic pgd_alloc() isn't worth it.  Instead we introduce two new helpers,
__pgd_alloc() and __pgd_free(), and make use of them in the arch-specific
pgd_alloc() and pgd_free() wherever possible.  To accommodate as many arch
as possible, __pgd_alloc() takes a page allocation order.

Because pagetable_alloc() allocates zeroed pages, explicit zeroing in
pgd_alloc() becomes redundant and we can get rid of it.  Some trivial
implementations of pgd_free() also become unnecessary once __pgd_alloc()
is used; remove them.

Another small improvement is consistent accounting of PGD pages by using
GFP_PGTABLE_{USER,KERNEL} as appropriate.

Not all PGD allocations can be handled by the generic helpers.  In
particular, multiple architectures allocate PGDs from a kmem_cache, and
those PGDs may not be page-sized.

db6b435d73 mm: pgtable: introduce pagetable_dtor()
The pagetable_p*_dtor() are exactly the same except for the handling of
ptlock.  If we make ptlock_free() handle the case where ptdesc->ptl is
NULL and remove VM_BUG_ON_PAGE() from pmd_ptlock_free(), we can unify
pagetable_p*_dtor() into one function.  Let's introduce pagetable_dtor()
to do this.

Later, pagetable_dtor() will be moved to tlb_remove_ptdesc(), so that
ptlock and page table pages can be freed together (regardless of whether
RCU is used).  This prevents the use-after-free problem where the ptlock
is freed immediately but the page table pages is freed later via RCU.

579e7fd383 um: rtc: use RTC time when calculating the alarm
The kernel realtime and the current RTC time may have a (small) offset.
Should the kernel time be slightly in the future, then the timeout is
zero. This is problematic in time-travel mode, as a zero timeout can be
correctly configured and time never advances.

Replace the kernel realtime read with a read of the actual persistent
RTC clock. Also, for time-travel, calculate the exact nanoseconds needed
for the clock to advance.

e70140ba0d Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver struct
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and
is really not helping.  Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member
function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a
comment to that effect:

   * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove().
   * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are
   * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped.
   */

This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with
'.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs
to make things line up.

I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used
spaces to line things up.

Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this
is the end result.  No more unnecessary conversion noise.

2f681ba4b3 um: move thread info into task
This selects the THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK option for UM and changes the way
that the current task is discovered. This is trivial though, as UML
already tracks the current task in cpu_tasks[] and this can be used to
retrieve it.

Also remove the signal handler code that copies the thread information
into the IRQ stack. It is obsolete now, which also means that the
mentioned race condition cannot happen anymore.

9bfc4824fd x86/module: prepare module loading for ROX allocations of text
When module text memory will be allocated with ROX permissions, the memory
at the actual address where the module will live will contain invalid
instructions and there will be a writable copy that contains the actual
module code.

Several architectures support text patching, but they name the header
files that declare patching functions differently.

Make all such headers consistently named text-patching.h and add an empty

Currently, show_stack() always dumps the trace of the current task.
However, it should dump the trace of the specified task if one is
provided. Otherwise, things like running "echo t > sysrq-trigger"

d85deadc17 um: virtio_uml: fix call_fd IRQ allocation
If the device does not support slave requests, then the IRQ will not yet
be allocated. So initialize the IRQ to UM_IRQ_ALLOC so that it will be
allocated if none has been assigned yet and store it slightly later when
we know that it will not be immediately unregistered again.

ce6e85a186 um: remove broken double fault detection
The show_stack function had some code to detect double faults. However,
the logic is wrong and it would e.g. trigger if a WARNING happened
inside an IRQ.

Remove it without trying to add a new logic. The current behaviour,
which will just fault repeatedly until the IRQ stack is used up and the
host kills UML, seems to be good enough.

b2473a3597 of/fdt: add dt_phys arg to early_init_dt_scan and early_init_dt_verify
__pa() is only intended to be used for linear map addresses and using
it for initial_boot_params which is in fixmap for arm64 will give an
incorrect value. Hence save the physical address when it is known at
boot time when calling early_init_dt_scan for arm64 and use it at kexec
time instead of converting the virtual address using __pa().

Note that arm64 doesn't need the FDT region reserved in the DT as the
kernel explicitly reserves the passed in FDT. Therefore, only a debug
warning is fixed with this change.

asm-generic: provide generic page_to_phys and phys_to_page implementations
page_to_phys is duplicated by all architectures, and from some strange
reason placed in <asm/io.h> where it doesn't fit at all.

phys_to_page is only provided by a few architectures despite having a lot
of open coded users.

Provide generic versions in <asm-generic/memory_model.h> to make these
helpers more easily usable.

Note with this patch powerpc loses the CONFIG_DEBUG_VIRTUAL pfn_valid
check.  It will be added back in a generic version later.

d3b08e5f3f um: fix stub exe build with CONFIG_GCOV
CONFIG_GCOV is special and only in UML since it builds the
kernel with a "userspace" option. This is fine, but the stub
is even more special and not really a full userspace process,
so it then fails to link as reported.

Remove the GCOV options from the stub build.

For good measure, also remove the GPROF options, even though
they don't seem to cause build failures now.

To be able to do this, export the specific options (GCOV_OPT
and GPROF_OPT) but rename them so there's less chance of any
conflicts.

d61ac4a749 um: remove PATH_MAX use
Evidently, PATH_MAX isn't always defined, at least not via <limits.h>.
Simply remove the use and replace it by a constant 4k. As stat::st_size
is zero for /proc/self/exe we can't even size it automatically, and it
seems unlikely someone's going to try to run UML with such a path.

3f17fed214 um: switch to regset API and depend on XSTATE
The PTRACE_GETREGSET API has now existed since Linux 2.6.33. The XSAVE
CPU feature should also be sufficiently common to be able to rely on it.

With this, define our internal FP state to be the hosts XSAVE data. Add
discovery for the hosts XSAVE size and place the FP registers at the end
of task_struct so that we can adjust the size at runtime.

Next we can implement the regset API on top and update the signal
handling as well as ptrace APIs to use them. Also switch coredump
creation to use the regset API and finally set HAVE_ARCH_TRACEHOOK.

This considerably improves the signal frames. Previously they might not
have contained all the registers (i386) and also did not have the
sizes and magic values set to the correct values to permit userspace to
decode the frame.

As a side effect, this will permit UML to run on hosts with newer CPU
extensions (such as AMX) that need even more register state.

0b8b2668f9 um: insert scheduler ticks when userspace does not yield
In time-travel mode userspace can do a lot of work without any time
passing. Unfortunately, this can result in OOM situations as the RCU
core code will never be run.

Work around this by keeping track of userspace processes that do not
yield for a lot of operations. When this happens, insert a jiffie into
the sched_clock clock to account time against the process and cause the
bookkeeping to run.

As sched_clock is used for tracing, it is useful to keep it in sync
between the different VMs. As such, try to remove added ticks again when
the actual clock ticks.

2717c6b649 um: Abandon the _PAGE_NEWPROT bit
When a PTE is updated in the page table, the _PAGE_NEWPAGE bit will
always be set. And the corresponding page will always be mapped or
unmapped depending on whether the PTE is present or not. The check
on the _PAGE_NEWPROT bit is not really reachable. Abandoning it will
allow us to simplify the code and remove the unreachable code.
