documented (hopefully adequately) in the respective changelogs.  Notable
 series include:
 
 - Lucas Stach has provided some page-mapping
   cleanup/consolidation/maintainability work in the series "mm/treewide:
   Remove pXd_huge() API".
 
 - In the series "Allow migrate on protnone reference with
   MPOL_PREFERRED_MANY policy", Donet Tom has optimized mempolicy's

Low overhead [1] per-callsite memory allocation profiling. Not just for
debug kernels, overhead low enough to be deployed in production.

Performance overhead:
To evaluate performance we implemented an in-kernel test executing
multiple get_free_page/free_page and kmalloc/kfree calls with allocation
sizes growing from 8 to 240 bytes with CPU frequency set to max and CPU
affinity set to a specific CPU to minimize the noise. Below are results
from running the test on Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS with 6.8.0-rc1 kernel on
56 core Intel Xeon:

6aff4c26ed drm/gma500: Remove lid code
Due to a change in the order of initialization, the lid timer got
started before proper setup was made. This resulted in a crash during
boot.

The lid switch is handled by gma500 through a timer that periodically
polls the opregion for changes. These types of ACPI events shouldn't be
handled by the graphics driver so let's get rid of the lid code.  This
fixes the crash during boot.

e965a70727 drm: remove I2C_CLASS_DDC support
After removal of the legacy EEPROM driver and I2C_CLASS_DDC support in
olpc_dcon there's no i2c client driver left supporting I2C_CLASS_DDC.
Class-based device auto-detection is a legacy mechanism and shouldn't
be used in new code. So we can remove this class completely now.

9edb071c8b drm/gma500: refactor deprecated strncpy
`strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1].

We should prefer more robust and less ambiguous string interfaces.

Since `chan->base.name` is expected to be NUL-terminated, a suitable
replacement is `strscpy` [2] due to the fact that it guarantees
NUL-termination on the destination buffer without also unnecessarily
NUL-padding (since `chan` is kzalloc'd already).

4520844b44 fbdev: Use _IOMEM_ infix for I/O-memory helpers
Change the infix for fbdev's I/O-memory helpers from _IO_ to _IOMEM_
to distiguish them from other types of I/O, such as file operations.
The helpers operate on memory ranges in the I/O address space and the
naming should make this clear. Adapt all users. No functional changes.

40e324e0d8 drm: Remove flag FBINFO_DEFAULT from fbdev emulation
The flag FBINFO_DEFAULT is 0 and has no effect, as struct fbinfo.flags
has been allocated to zero by framebuffer_alloc(). So do not set it.

Flags should signal differences from the default values. After cleaning
up all occurrences of FBINFO_DEFAULT, the token will be removed.

27655b9bb9 drm/client: Send hotplug event after registering a client
Generate a hotplug event after registering a client to allow the
client to configure its display. Remove the hotplug calls from the
existing clients for fbdev emulation. This change fixes a concurrency
bug between registering a client and receiving events from the DRM
core. The bug is present in the fbdev emulation of all drivers.

The fbdev emulation currently generates a hotplug event before
registering the client to the device. For each new output, the DRM
core sends an additional hotplug event to each registered client.

If the DRM core detects first output between sending the artificial
hotplug and registering the device, the output's hotplug event gets
lost. If this is the first output, the fbdev console display remains
dark. This has been observed with amdgpu and fbdev-generic.

Fix this by adding hotplug generation directly to the client's
register helper drm_client_register(). Registering the client and
receiving events are serialized by struct drm_device.clientlist_mutex.
So an output is either configured by the initial hotplug event, or
the client has already been registered.

The bug was originally added in commit 6e3f17ee73 ("drm/fb-helper:
generic: Call drm_client_add() after setup is done"), in which adding
a client and receiving a hotplug event switched order. It was hidden,
as most hardware and drivers have at least on static output configured.
Other drivers didn't use the internal DRM client or still had struct
drm_mode_config_funcs.output_poll_changed set. That callback handled
hotplug events as well. After not setting the callback in amdgpu in
commit 0e3172bac3 ("drm/amdgpu: Don't set struct
drm_driver.output_poll_changed"), amdgpu did not show a framebuffer
console if output events got lost. The bug got copy-pasted from
fbdev-generic into the other fbdev emulation.

7fca1dd909 drm/gma500: Use regular fbdev I/O helpers
Use the regular fbdev helpers for framebuffer I/O instead of DRM's
helpers. Gma500 does not use damage handling, so DRM's fbdev helpers
are mere wrappers around the fbdev code.

By using fbdev helpers directly within each DRM fbdev emulation,
we can eventually remove DRM's wrapper functions entirely.

116b1c5a36 video/aperture: Provide a VGA helper for gma500 and internal use
The hardware for gma500 is different from the rest, as it uses stolen
framebuffer memory that is not available via PCI BAR. The regular PCI
removal helper cannot detect the framebuffer, while the non-PCI helper
misses possible conflicting VGA devices (i.e., a framebuffer or text
console).

Gma500 therefore calls both helpers to catch all cases. It's confusing
as it implies that there's something about the PCI device that requires
ownership management. The relationship between the PCI device and the
VGA devices is non-obvious. At worst, readers might assume that calling
two functions for clearing aperture ownership is a bug in the driver.

Hence, move the PCI removal helper's code for VGA functionality into
a separate function and call this function from gma500. Documents the
purpose of each call to aperture helpers. The change contains comments
and example code form the discussion at [1].

62aeaeaa1b drm/aperture: Remove primary argument
Only really pci devices have a business setting this - it's for
figuring out whether the legacy vga stuff should be nuked too. And
with the preceding two patches those are all using the pci version of
this.

Which means for all other callers primary == false and we can remove
it now.

80e993988b drm/gma500: Use drm_aperture_remove_conflicting_pci_framebuffers
This one nukes all framebuffers, which is a bit much. In reality
gma500 is igpu and never shipped with anything discrete, so there should
not be any difference.

v2: Unfortunately the framebuffer sits outside of the pci bars for
gma500, and so only using the pci helpers won't be enough. Otoh if we
only use non-pci helper, then we don't get the vga handling, and
subsequent refactoring to untangle these special cases won't work.

It's not pretty, but the simplest fix (since gma500 really is the only
quirky pci driver like this we have) is to just have both calls.

b704eeae31 drm/gma500: Pass fb_info to psb_fbdev_vm_fault()
Instead of the DRM framebuffer, pass the FB info strcuture to the
fbdev page-fault handler psb_fbdev_vm_fault(). The framebuffer is a
high-level data structure and does not belong into fault handling.
The fb_info has all necessary information. Also set fix.smem_start
to the correct value (the beginning of the framebuffer in physical
address space) and streamline the page-fault handler.

8f1aaccb04 drm/gma500: Implement client-based fbdev emulation
Implement fbdevemulation on top of struct drm_client and its helpers.
This ad-hoc interfaces for restoring and closing fbdev emulation with
per-client callback for hotplugging, restoring and unregistering.

A single function, psb_fbdev_setup(), starts fbdev emulation after
the DRM device has been registered. Hence, fbdev acts like a regular
DRM client.

The setup call only prepares the fbdev emulation. It then implements
connector hotplugging. The first successful hotplug event initializes
fbdev emulation.

Unregistering depends on the hotplugging. Fully initialized emulation
is cleaned up through drm_fb_helper_unregister_info() and fb_destroy.
For prepared-only setups, unregistering unprepares the emulation and
releases all resources. In both cases, fbdev emulation will be cleaned
up.

3fb1f62f80 drm/fb-helper: Remove drm_fb_helper_unprepare() from drm_fb_helper_fini()
Move drm_fb_helper_unprepare() from drm_fb_helper_fini() into the
calling fbdev implementation. Avoids a possible stale mutex with
generic fbdev code.

As indicated by its name, drm_fb_helper_prepare() prepares struct
drm_fb_helper before setting up the fbdev support with a call to
drm_fb_helper_init(). In legacy fbdev emulation, this happens next
to each other. If successful, drm_fb_helper_fini() later tear down
the fbdev device and also unprepare via drm_fb_helper_unprepare().

Generic fbdev emulation prepares struct drm_fb_helper immediately
after allocating the instance. It only calls drm_fb_helper_init()
as part of processing a hotplug event. If the hotplug-handling fails,
it runs drm_fb_helper_fini(). This unprepares the fb-helper instance
and the next hotplug event runs on stale data.

Solve this by moving drm_fb_helper_unprepare() from drm_fb_helper_fini()
into the fbdev implementations. Call it right before freeing the
fb-helper instance.

a6276e92a0 drm: Include <linux/backlight.h> where needed
Include <linux/backlight.h> in source files that need it. Some of
DRM's source code gets the backlight header via drm_crtc_helper.h
and <linux/fb.h>, which can leed to unnecessary recompilation. If
possible, do not include drm_crtc_helper.h any longer.

drm: Only select I2C_ALGOBIT for drivers that actually need it
While working on a drm driver that doesn't need the i2c algobit stuff I
noticed that DRM selects this code even though only 8 drivers actually use
it. While also only some drivers use i2c, keep the select for I2C for the
next cleanup patch. Still prepare this already by also selecting I2C for
the individual drivers.

983780918c drm/fb-helper: Perform all fbdev I/O with the same implementation
Implement the fbdev's read/write helpers with the same functions. Use
the generic fbdev's code as template. Convert all drivers.

DRM's fb helpers must implement regular I/O functionality in struct
fb_ops and possibly perform a damage update. Handle all this in the
same functions and convert drivers. The functionality has been used
as part of the generic fbdev code for some time. The drivers don't
set struct drm_fb_helper.fb_dirty, so they will not be affected by
damage handling.

For I/O memory, fb helpers now provide drm_fb_helper_cfb_read() and
drm_fb_helper_cfb_write(). Several drivers require these. Until now
tegra used I/O read and write, although the memory buffer appears to
be in system memory. So use _sys_ helpers now.

7c99616e3f drm: Remove drm_mode_config::fb_base
The fb_base in struct drm_mode_config has been unused for a long time.
Some drivers set it and some don't leading to a very confusing state
where the variable can't be relied upon, because there's no indication
as to which driver sets it and which doesn't.

The only usage of fb_base is internal to two drivers so instead of trying
to force it into all the drivers to get it into a coherent state
completely remove it.

c989a62484 drm/gma500: Call acpi_video_register_backlight()
On machines without an Intel video opregion the acpi_video driver
immediately probes the ACPI video bus and used to also immediately
register acpi_video# backlight devices when supported.

Once the drm/kms driver then loaded later and possibly registered
a native backlight device then the drivers/acpi/video_detect.c code
unregistered the acpi_video0 device to avoid there being 2 backlight
devices (when acpi_video_get_backlight_type()==native).

This means that userspace used to briefly see 2 devices and the
disappearing of acpi_video0 after a brief time confuses the systemd
backlight level save/restore code, see e.g.:

To fix this the ACPI video code has been modified to make backlight class
device registration a separate step, relying on the drm/kms driver to
ask for the acpi_video backlight registration after it is done setting up
its native backlight device.

Add a call to the new acpi_video_register_backlight() function after
setting up the gma500's native backlight, so that the acpi_video backlight
device gets registered on systems where the gma500's native backlight
device is not registered.

a7b98d4dfe drm/gma500: Don't register backlight when another backlight should be used
Before this commit when we want userspace to use the acpi_video backlight
device we register both the GPU's native backlight device and acpi_video's
firmware acpi_video# backlight device. This relies on userspace preferring
firmware type backlight devices over native ones.

Registering 2 backlight devices for a single display really is
undesirable, don't register the GPU's native backlight device when
another backlight device should be used.

dec4ddbe1d drm/gma500: Change registered backlight device type to raw/native
Change the type for the registered backlight class device from platform
to raw/native.

The poulsbo/cedarview/oaktrail backlight support is using native GPU
backlight control and as such the type should be raw (aka native) as
is done by all the other native GPU backlight driver code.

Note this will not change much from userspace's point of view.
poulsbo/cedarview laptops typically offer both an ACPI-video
backlight interface as well as the native GPU backlight interface.

The /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 has a type of firmware and
userspace typically looks for firmware devices before looking
for platform devices. The typical standard lookup order is:
firmware -> platform -> raw

This means that both before and after this change typical userspace
backlight consumers (sich as e.g. GNOME) will prefer the firmware
acpi_video0 backlight device.

This has been tested on a Packard Bell Dot SC (Intel Atom N2600, cedarview)
and a Sony Vaio vpc-x11s1e (Intel N540, poulsbo) laptop.

1f90b12327 drm/gma500: Refactor backlight support (v2)
Refactor backlight support so that the gma_backlight_enable() /
gma_backlight_disable() / gma_backlight_set() functions used by
the Opregion handle will also work if no backlight_device gets
registered.

This is a preparation patch for not registering the gma500's own backlight
device when acpi_video should be used, since registering 2 backlight
devices for a single display really is undesirable.

Since the acpi-video interface often uses the OpRegion we need to keep
the OpRegion functional even when dev_priv->backlight_device is NULL.

As a result of this refactor the actual backlight_device_register()
call is moved to the shared backlight.c code and all #ifdefs related to
CONFIG_BACKLIGHT_CLASS_DEVICE are now also limited to backlight.c .

No functional changes intended.

This has been tested on a Packard Bell Dot SC (Intel Atom N2600, cedarview)
and a Sony Vaio vpc-x11s1e (Intel N540, poulsbo) laptop.

672c473576 drm/gma500: Rewrite power management code
Rewrite the power.c code. For some reason this was doing locking +
refcounting + state (suspended or not) bookkeeping all by itself.

But there is no reason for this, this is all taken care of by
the runtime-pm core, through pm_runtime_get()/_put().

Besides this not being necessary the DIY code is also quite weird/
buggy in some places. E.g. power_begin() would manually do a resume
when not resumed already and force_on=true, followed by a
pm_runtime_get(), which will cause a call to gma_power_resume() to
get scheduled which would redo the entire resume again. Which can
all be replaced by a single pm_runtime_get_sync() call.

Note that this is just a cleanup, this does not actually fix
the (disabled through #if 0) runtime-pm support. It does now call
pm_runtime_enable(), but only after doing a pm_runtime_get() at
probe-time, so the device is never runtime suspended.

Doing this permanent get() + enable() instead of not calling
enable() at all is necessary for the pm_runtime_get_if_in_use() call
in gma_power_begin() to work properly.

Note this also removes the gma_power_is_on() call a check like this
without actually holding a reference is always racy, so it is a bad
idea (and therefor has no pm_runtime_foo() equivalent).

The 2 code paths which were using gma_power_is_on() are actually both
guaranteed to only run when the device is powered-on so the 2 checks
can simply be dropped.
