The usual shower of singleton fixes and minor series all over MM,
documented (hopefully adequately) in the respective changelogs. Notable
series include:
- Lucas Stach has provided some page-mapping
cleanup/consolidation/maintainability work in the series "mm/treewide:
Remove pXd_huge() API".
- In the series "Allow migrate on protnone reference with
MPOL_PREFERRED_MANY policy", Donet Tom has optimized mempolicy's
MPOL_PREFERRED_MANY mode, yielding almost doubled performance in one
test.
- In their series "Memory allocation profiling" Kent Overstreet and
Suren Baghdasaryan have contributed a means of determining (via

Performance overhead:
To evaluate performance we implemented an in-kernel test executing
multiple get_free_page/free_page and kmalloc/kfree calls with allocation
sizes growing from 8 to 240 bytes with CPU frequency set to max and CPU
affinity set to a specific CPU to minimize the noise. Below are results
from running the test on Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS with 6.8.0-rc1 kernel on
56 core Intel Xeon:

drm/gma500: Remove lid code
Due to a change in the order of initialization, the lid timer got
started before proper setup was made. This resulted in a crash during
boot.
The lid switch is handled by gma500 through a timer that periodically
polls the opregion for changes. These types of ACPI events shouldn't be
handled by the graphics driver so let's get rid of the lid code. This
fixes the crash during boot.

intel-mid.h is providing some core parts of the South Complex PM, which are usually are not used by individual drivers. In particular, this driver doesn't use it, so simply remove the unused header. drm: remove I2C_CLASS_DDC support
After removal of the legacy EEPROM driver and I2C_CLASS_DDC support in olpc_dcon there's no i2c client driver left supporting I2C_CLASS_DDC. Class-based device auto-detection is a legacy mechanism and shouldn't be used in new code. So we can remove this class completely now. `strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1]. We should prefer more robust and less ambiguous string interfaces. Since `chan->base.name` is expected to be NUL-terminated, a suitable replacement is `strscpy` [2] due to the fact that it guarantees NUL-termination on the destination buffer without also unnecessarily NUL-padding (since `chan` is kzalloc'd already). drm/client: Send hotplug event after registering a client
Generate a hotplug event after registering a client to allow the client to configure its display. Remove the hotplug calls from the existing clients for fbdev emulation. This change fixes a concurrency bug between registering a client and receiving events from the DRM core. The bug is present in the fbdev emulation of all drivers. The fbdev emulation currently generates a hotplug event before registering the client to the device. For each new output, the DRM core sends an additional hotplug event to each registered client. If the DRM core detects first output between sending the artificial hotplug and registering the device, the output's hotplug event gets lost. If this is the first output, the fbdev console display remains dark. This has been observed with amdgpu and fbdev-generic. Fix this by adding hotplug generation directly to the client's register helper drm_client_register(). Registering the client and receiving events are serialized by struct drm_device.clientlist_mutex. So an output is either configured by the initial hotplug event, or the client has already been registered. The bug was originally added in commit |

video/aperture: Provide a VGA helper for gma500 and internal use
The hardware for gma500 is different from the rest, as it uses stolen framebuffer memory that is not available via PCI BAR. The regular PCI removal helper cannot detect the framebuffer, while the non-PCI helper misses possible conflicting VGA devices (i.e., a framebuffer or text console). Gma500 therefore calls both helpers to catch all cases. It's confusing as it implies that there's something about the PCI device that requires ownership management. The relationship between the PCI device and the VGA devices is non-obvious. At worst, readers might assume that calling two functions for clearing aperture ownership is a bug in the driver. Hence, move the PCI removal helper's code for VGA functionality into a separate function and call this function from gma500. Documents the purpose of each call to aperture helpers. This one nukes all framebuffers, which is a bit much. In reality gma500 is igpu and never shipped with anything discrete, so there should not be any difference. v2: Unfortunately the framebuffer sits outside of the pci bars for gma500, and so only using the pci helpers won't be enough. Otoh if we only use non-pci helper, then we don't get the vga handling, and subsequent refactoring to untangle these special cases won't work. drm/gma500: Implement client-based fbdev emulation
Implement fbdevemulation on top of struct drm_client and its helpers. This ad-hoc interfaces for restoring and closing fbdev emulation with per-client callback for hotplugging, restoring and unregistering. A single function, psb_fbdev_setup(), starts fbdev emulation after the DRM device has been registered. Hence, fbdev acts like a regular DRM client. The setup call only prepares the fbdev emulation. It then implements connector hotplugging. The first successful hotplug event initializes fbdev emulation. Unregistering depends on the hotplugging. Fully initialized emulation is cleaned up through drm_fb_helper_unregister_info() and fb_destroy. For prepared-only setups, unregistering unprepares the emulation and releases all resources. drm/fb-helper: Remove drm_fb_helper_unprepare() from drm_fb_helper_fini()
Move drm_fb_helper_unprepare() from drm_fb_helper_fini() into the
calling fbdev implementation. Avoids a possible stale mutex with
generic fbdev code.
As indicated by its name, drm_fb_helper_prepare() prepares struct
drm_fb_helper before setting up the fbdev support with a call to
drm_fb_helper_init(). In legacy fbdev emulation, this happens next
to each other. If successful, drm_fb_helper_fini() later tear down
the fbdev device and also unprepare via drm_fb_helper_unprepare().
Generic fbdev emulation prepares struct drm_fb_helper immediately
after allocating the instance. It only calls drm_fb_helper_init()
as part of processing a hotplug event. If the hotplug-handling fails,
it runs drm_fb_helper_fini(). This unprepares the fb-helper instance
and the next hotplug event runs on stale data.
Solve this by moving drm_fb_helper_unprepare() from drm_fb_helper_fini()
into the fbdev implementations. Call it right before freeing the
fb-helper instance.

drm/fb-helper: Perform all fbdev I/O with the same implementation
Implement the fbdev's read/write helpers with the same functions. Use the generic fbdev's code as template. Convert all drivers. DRM's fb helpers must implement regular I/O functionality in struct fb_ops and possibly perform a damage update. Handle all this in the same functions and convert drivers. The functionality has been used as part of the generic fbdev code for some time. The drivers don't set struct drm_fb_helper.fb_dirty, so they will not be affected by damage handling. For I/O memory, fb helpers now provide drm_fb_helper_cfb_read() and drm_fb_helper_cfb_write(). Several drivers require these. Until now tegra used I/O read and write, although the memory buffer appears to be in system memory. drm: Remove drm_mode_config::fb_base
The fb_base in struct drm_mode_config has been unused for a long time. Some drivers set it and some don't leading to a very confusing state where the variable can't be relied upon, because there's no indication as to which driver sets it and which doesn't. The only usage of fb_base is internal to two drivers so instead of trying to force it into all the drivers to get it into a coherent state completely remove it. drm/gma500: Call acpi_video_register_backlight()
On machines without an Intel video opregion the acpi_video driver immediately probes the ACPI video bus and used to also immediately register acpi_video# backlight devices when supported. Once the drm/kms driver then loaded later and possibly registered a native backlight device then the drivers/acpi/video_detect.c code unregistered the acpi_video0 device to avoid there being 2 backlight devices (when acpi_video_get_backlight_type()==native). This means that userspace used to briefly see 2 devices and the disappearing of acpi_video0 after a brief time confuses the systemd backlight level save/restore code, see e.g.: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=269920 To fix this the ACPI video code has been modified to make backlight class device registration a separate step, relying on the drm/kms driver to ask for the acpi_video backlight registration after it is done setting up its native backlight device. Add a call to the new acpi_video_register_backlight() function after setting up the gma500's native backlight, so that the acpi_video backlight device gets registered on systems where the gma500's native backlight device is not registered. Before this commit when we want userspace to use the acpi_video backlight device we register both the GPU's native backlight device and acpi_video's firmware acpi_video# backlight device. This relies on userspace preferring firmware type backlight devices over native ones. Registering 2 backlight devices for a single display really is undesirable, don't register the GPU's native backlight device when another backlight device should be used. drm/gma500: Change registered backlight device type to raw/native
Change the type for the registered backlight class device from platform to raw/native. The poulsbo/cedarview/oaktrail backlight support is using native GPU backlight control and as such the type should be raw (aka native) as is done by all the other native GPU backlight driver code. Note this will not change much from userspace's point of view. poulsbo/cedarview laptops typically offer both an ACPI-video backlight interface as well as the native GPU backlight interface. The /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 has a type of firmware and userspace typically looks for firmware devices before looking for platform devices. The typical standard lookup order is: firmware -> platform -> raw This means that both before and after this change typical userspace backlight consumers (sich as e.g. GNOME) will prefer the firmware acpi_video0 backlight device. This has been tested on a Packard Bell Dot SC (Intel Atom N2600, cedarview) and a Sony Vaio vpc-x11s1e (Intel N540, poulsbo) laptop. Refactor backlight support so that the gma_backlight_enable() / gma_backlight_disable() / gma_backlight_set() functions used by the Opregion handle will also work if no backlight_device gets registered. Since the acpi-video interface often uses the OpRegion we need to keep the OpRegion functional even when dev_priv->backlight_device is NULL. As a result of this refactor the actual backlight_device_register() call is moved to the shared backlight.c code and all #ifdefs related to CONFIG_BACKLIGHT_CLASS_DEVICE are now also limited to backlight.c . No functional changes intended. This has been tested on a Packard Bell Dot SC (Intel Atom N2600, cedarview) and a Sony Vaio vpc-x11s1e (Intel N540, poulsbo) laptop. Changes in v2: - Fix unused variable warnings when CONFIG_BACKLIGHT is not selected by marking the 2 variables as __maybe_unused. drm/gma500: Rewrite power management code
Rewrite the power.c code. For some reason this was doing locking + refcounting + state (suspended or not) bookkeeping all by itself. But there is no reason for this, this is all taken care of by the runtime-pm core, through pm_runtime_get()/_put(). Besides this not being necessary the DIY code is also quite weird/ buggy in some places. E.g. power_begin() would manually do a resume when not resumed already and force_on=true, followed by a pm_runtime_get(), which will cause a call to gma_power_resume() to get scheduled which would redo the entire resume again. Which can all be replaced by a single pm_runtime_get_sync() call. Note that this is just a cleanup, this does not actually fix the (disabled through #if 0) runtime-pm support. It does now call pm_runtime_enable(), but only after doing a pm_runtime_get() at probe-time, so the device is never runtime suspended. Doing this permanent get() + enable() instead of not calling enable() at all is necessary for the pm_runtime_get_if_in_use() call in gma_power_begin() to work properly. Note this also removes the gma_power_is_on() call a check like this without actually holding a reference is always racy, so it is a bad idea (and therefor has no pm_runtime_foo() equivalent). The 2 code paths which were using gma_power_is_on() are actually both guaranteed to only run when the device is powered-on so the 2 checks can simply be dropped.
