72e2029811 doc: remove "end user"
We use "end user" in ambiguous ways. Sometimes we mean the developer,
and sometimes we mean the application user. Use "developer" where
developer is meant.

be360e232c doc: reorder deprecated tls docs
In other api docs, it seems that deprecated classes and methods are
listed along with others, and marked as deprecated. In tls docs,
deprecations were listed at the bottom of the document. This commit
reorders them to what seems to be the standard, and corrects some links
in doc/api/deprecations.md

6f12643142 doc: use _Static method_ instead of _Class Method_
Our docs describe static methods as Class Methods which seems
idiosyncratic for JavaScript. Align with MDN which calls them static
methods.

Refs: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/MDN/Contribute/Structures/API_references/What_does_an_API_reference_need

JSON format for our docs will still use the key name `classMethods` for
this. I would like to change it to `staticMethods` but I don't know if
that will break things for consumers. So, leaving it alone. It's a
machine-consumable label more than a human-readable so I can live with
that.

doc: fix LTS replaceme tags
When cherry-picking release commits for LTS releases into master,
the `REPLACEME` metadata can be taken over as well, to give users
a more accurate view of what is being released on which release line.

This addresses this problem for all previous LTS releases for which
this has not been done.

ECMAScript Modules - Experimental Warning Removal:

- module: remove experimental modules warning
  (Guy Bedford) [#31974](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/31974)

In Node.js 13 we removed the need to include the --experimental-modules
flag, but when running EcmaScript Modules in Node.js, this would still
result in a warning ExperimentalWarning: The ESM module loader is
experimental.

As of Node.js 14 there is no longer this warning when using ESM in
Node.js. However, the ESM implementation in Node.js remains
experimental. As per our stability index: “The feature is not subject
to Semantic Versioning rules. Non-backward compatible changes or
removal may occur in any future release.” Users should be cautious when
using the feature in production environments.

Please keep in mind that the implementation of ESM in Node.js differs
from the developer experience you might be familiar with. Most
transpilation workflows support features such as optional file
extensions or JSON modules that the Node.js ESM implementation does not
support. It is highly likely that modules from transpiled environments
will require a certain degree of refactoring to work in Node.js. It is
worth mentioning that many of our design decisions were made with two
primary goals. Spec compliance and Web Compatibility. It is our belief
that the current implementation offers a future proof model to
authoring ESM modules that paves the path to Universal JavaScript.
Please read more in our documentation.

The ESM implementation in Node.js is still experimental but we do believe
that we are getting very close to being able to call ESM in Node.js
“stable”. Removing the warning is a huge step in that direction.

New V8 ArrayBuffer API:

* **src**: migrate to new V8 ArrayBuffer API
  (Thang Tran) [#30782](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/30782)

Multiple ArrayBuffers pointing to the same base address are no longer
allowed by V8. This may impact native addons.

Toolchain and Compiler Upgrades:

- (SEMVER-MAJOR) build: update macos deployment target to 10.13 for 14.x
  (AshCripps)[#32454](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/32454)
- (SEMVER-MAJOR) doc: update cross compiler machine for Linux armv7
  (Richard Lau) [#32812](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/32812)
- (SEMVER-MAJOR) doc: update Centos/RHEL releases use devtoolset-8
  (Richard Lau) [#32812](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/32812)
- (SEMVER-MAJOR) doc: remove SmartOS from official binaries
  (Richard Lau) [#32812](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/32812)
- (SEMVER-MAJOR) win: block running on EOL Windows versions
  (João Reis) [#31954](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/31954)

It is expected that there will be an ABI mismatch on ARM between the
Node.js binary and native addons. Native addons are only broken if they
interact with `std::shared_ptr`. This is expected to be fixed in a
later version of Node.js 14.
- [#30786](https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/30786)

Update to V8 8.1:

- (SEMVER-MAJOR) deps: update V8 to 8.1.307.20
  (Matheus Marchini) [#32116](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/32116)

Other Notable Changes:

- cli, report: move --report-on-fatalerror to stable

10040500da doc: remove dashes
The use of dashes -- in general, but especially in our docs -- can be
problematic. It is used inconsistently and there is always another form
of punctuation that is as good or better for the situation. In an effort
to reduce the number of variations we use to display the same types of
information, remove the various uses of dashes from the documentation.

Notable changes:

* assert:
  * If the validation function passed to `assert.throws()` or
    `assert.rejects()` returns a value other than `true`, an assertion
    error will be thrown instead of the original error to highlight the
    programming mistake (Ruben Bridgewater).

  * If a constructor function is passed to validate the instance of

* build:
  * Node.js releases are now built with default full-icu support. This
    means that all locales supported by ICU are now included and
    Intl-related APIs may return different values than before
    (Richard Lau).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/29887
  * The minimum Xcode version supported for macOS was increased to 10.
    It is still possible to build Node.js with Xcode 8 but this may no
    longer be the case in a future v13.x release (Michael Dawson).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/29622
* child_process:
  * `ChildProcess._channel` (DEP0129) is now a Runtime deprecation
    (cjihrig).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/27949
* console:
  * The output `console.timeEnd()` and `console.timeLog()` will now
    automatically select a suitable time unit instead of always using
    milliseconds (Xavier Stouder).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/29251
* deps:
  * The V8 engine was updated to version 7.8. This includes performance
    improvements to object destructuring, memory usage and WebAssembly
    startup time (Myles Borins).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/29694)
* domain:
  * The domain's error handler is now executed with the active domain
    set to the domain's parent to prevent inner recursion
    (Julien Gilli).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/26211
* fs:
  * The undocumented method `FSWatcher.prototype.start()` was removed
    (Lucas Holmquist).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/29905
  * Calling the `open()` method on a `ReadStream` or `WriteStream` now
    emits a runtime deprecation warning. The methods are supposed to be
    internal and should not be called by user code (Robert Nagy).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/29061
  * `fs.read/write`, `fs.readSync/writeSync` and `fd.read/write` now
    accept any safe integer as their `offset` parameter. The value of
    `offset` is also no longer coerced, so a valid type must be passed
    to the functions (Zach Bjornson).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/26572
* http:
  * Aborted requests no longer emit the `end` or `error` events after

  * The `host` option for HTTP requests is now validated to be a string
    value (Giorgos Ntemiris).
    https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/29568
  * The `request.connection` and `response.connection` properties are now

worker: refactor worker.terminate()
At the collaborator summit in Berlin, the behaviour of
`worker.terminate()` was discussed.

In particular, switching from a callback-based to a Promise-based API
was suggested. While investigating that possibility later, it was
discovered that `.terminate()` was unintentionally synchronous up
until now (including calling its callback synchronously).

Also, the topic of its stability has been brought up. I have performed
two manual reviews of the native codebase for compatibility with
`.terminate()`, and performed some manual fuzz testing with the test
suite. At this point, bugs with `.terminate()` should, in my opinion,
be treated like bugs in other Node.js features.
(It is possible to make Node.js crash with `.terminate()` by messing
with internals and/or built-in prototype objects, but that is already
the case without `.terminate()` as well.)

This commit:

- Makes `.terminate()` an asynchronous operation.
- Makes `.terminate()` return a `Promise`.
- Runtime-deprecates passing a callback.
- Removes a warning about its stability from the documentation.
- Eliminates an unnecessary extra function from the C++ code.

A possible alternative to returning a `Promise` would be to keep the
method synchronous and just drop the callback. Generally, providing
an asynchronous API does provide us with a bit more flexibility.

    deprecated https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/27405.
  * Throw on `require('./path.mjs')`. This is technically a breaking
    change that should have landed with Node.js 12.0.0. It is necessary
    to have this to keep the possibility for a future minor version to
    load ES Modules with the require function.

module: throw an error for invalid package.json main entries
We currently ignore invalid `main` entries in package.json files.
This does not seem to be very user friendly as it's certainly an
error if the `main` entry is not a valid file name. So instead of
trying to resolve the file otherwise, throw an error immediately to
improve the user experience.
To keep it backwards compatible `index.js` files in the same directory
as the `package.json` will continue to be resolved instead but that
behavior is now deprecated.

process: move DEP0062 (node --debug) to end-of-life
This has already been practically end-of-life since `node --debug`
alone would exit the process. This patch drops support of
`node --inspect --debug-brk` as well.

`node --inspect --debug-brk` has been deprecated since v8,
it has been maintained so that vendors can target Node.js
v6 and above without detecting versions.
The support of `--inspect`, which starts from v6, will reach
end-of-life in April 2019, it should be safe to drop the support
of `--inspect --debug-brk` altogether in v12.

Also removes `process._deprecatedDebugBrk`

lib: move DEP0023 to end of life
This commit moves DEP0023 to end of life status. The
os.getNetworkInterfaces() method was introduced in the
unstable 0.5.0 release, and runtime deprecated in 0.6.0, the
first stable release of its existence.

This commit also fixes an inaccuracy in the deprecation, as the
replacement (os.networkInterfaces()) is actually a method.

crypto: deprecate digest == null in PBKDF2
I assume that permitting digest === null was unintentional when
digest === undefined was deprecated since their behavior was
equivalent. The sha1 default for digest === null has somehow made it
through refactoring of the PBKDF2 module multiple times, even though
digest === undefined has been EOL for some time now.

This change deprecates setting digest to null so we can fix the
behavior in Node.js 12 or so.

In deprecations.md, there are many uses of "has been" that are mildly
awkward. This changes several instances of things like "fhqwhgads() has

Especially for non-native speakers, present tense is generally easier to

2f12c95954 doc: edit text about revoking deprecations
* "un-deprecation" ಠ_ಠ -> "revoking deprecations"
* "From time-to-time" -> "Occastionally"
* "semver-major" and "semver-minor" are jargon that readers who don't
  follow our issue tracker will not know. Remove the sentence as it
  doesn't really impact end users. The deprecation is revoked when it is
  revoked. Rules around the releases where deprecations can be revoked
  may be added to the COLLABORATOR_GUIDE in the extensive section about
  deprecations there. If so, great, but let's still remove it here as
  having the information scattered in two places makes it likely that
  one will be edited to contradict the other and then it won't be clear
  which one is correct.
* Remove unneeded italics. The italicized sentence is not hugely
  critical information that we desperately want users to know. Most
  users won't care. They will only care about the deprecation message
  that they are looking up at that moment.

63a8436b91 doc: fix minor typographical error in DEP0079 text
Change `backwards compatibility` to `backward compatibility`.

(It's confusing because "backwards compatible" is acceptable because
"backwards" can be used as an adverb like that. However, as an
adjective, as in "backward compatibility", only "backward" will do.
Easiest solution: Always use "backward" because it is OK in both cases.
This is all compounded by the US vs UK English thing. US English tends
to favor "backward", and we standardize on US English, so that's another
point in favor of "backward" over "backwards" in this context.)

buffer: do deprecation warning outside node_modules
In addition to `--pending-deprecation`, emit a deprecation warning
for usage of the `Buffer()` constructor for call sites that are outside
of `node_modules`.

The goal of this is to better target developers, rather than
burdening users with an omnipresent and quickly ignored warning.

This implements the result of a TSC meeting discussion
from March 22, 2018.

zlib: use .bytesWritten instead of .bytesRead
The introduction of `.bytesRead` to zlib streams was unfortunate,
because other streams in Node.js core use the exact opposite naming
of `.bytesRead` and `.bytesWritten`.

While one could see how the original naming makes sense in
a `Transform` stream context, we should try to work towards more
consistent APIs in core for these things.

This introduces `zlib.bytesWritten` and documentation-only deprecates
`zlib.bytesRead`.

efb32592e1 src: deprecate legacy node::MakeCallback
The legacy MakeCallback functions do not provide a mechanism to
propagate async context. This means that any native modules using these
directly is likely breaking async debugging & tracing tools. For
example it is possible that such a module will cause incorrect async
stack traces to be reported (even when the module is not on the stack).

The new MakeCallback allow the user to specify the async context in
which the callback is to be executed.

523a1550a3 async_hooks: deprecate unsafe emit{Before,After}
The emit{Before,After} APIs in AsyncResource are problematic.

* emit{Before,After} are named to suggest that the only thing they do
  is emit the before and after hooks. However, they in fact, mutate
  the current execution context.
* They must be properly nested. Failure to do so by user code leads
  to catastrophic (unrecoverable) exceptions. It is very easy for the
  users to forget that they must be using a try/finally block around
  the code that must be surrounded by these operations. Even the
  example provided in the official docs makes this mistake. Failing
  to use a finally can lead to a catastrophic crash if the callback
  ends up throwing.

This change provides a safer `runInAsyncScope` API as an alternative
and deprecates emit{Before,After}.

617e3e96e6 util: runtime deprecation for custom .inspect()
Change documentation-only deprecation for custom inspection using
`object.inspect` property to a runtime deprecation.

This is a breaking change. Custom inspection via `object.inspect` is
deprecated because there is a more robust Symbol-based alternative to
`.inspect` and the custom inspection via `object.inspect` feature means
that people can accidentally break `console.log()` simply by attaching a
`.inspect` property to their objects. Note that since this is a
deprecation, the custom inspection will still work. The breaking change
is simply the printing of a warning which could alarm users, break tests
or other things that might be dependent on specific output, etc.

intl: unexpose Intl.v8BreakIterator
It was never an official Ecma-402 API, it is about to be superseded
by `Intl.Segmenter` and it's prone to crash under some circumstances.

Searches don't turn up any usage in the wild and the recommendation
from the V8 team is to remove it. Now seems like a good a time as
any to do that.

a25c754e42 doc: clarify async/asynchronous in deprecations.md
Change _async_ to _asynchronous_ in `deprecations.md` to avoid confusion
with the `async` keyword. This has the additional minor benefit of being
more formal and less conversational prose.
