Perf failed to add a kretprobe event with debuginfo of vmlinux which is
compiled by gcc with -fpatchable-function-entry option enabled. The
same issue with kernel module.

The entry address of kernel_clone converted by debuginfo is _text+599624
(0x92648), which is consistent with the value of DW_AT_low_pc attribute.
But the symbolic address of kernel_clone from /proc/kallsyms is
ffff800010092640.
This issue is found on arm64, -fpatchable-function-entry=2 is enabled when
CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_REGS=y;
Just as objdump displayed the assembler contents of kernel_clone,
GCC generate 2 NOPs at the beginning of each function.
kprobe_on_func_entry detects that (_text+599624) is not the entry address
of the function, which leads to the failure of adding kretprobe event.

The cause of the issue is that the first instruction in the compile unit
indicated by DW_AT_low_pc does not include NOPs.
This issue exists in all gcc versions that support
-fpatchable-function-entry option.
I have reported it to the GCC community:

Currently arm64 and PA-RISC may enable fpatchable-function-entry option.
The kernel compiled with clang does not have this issue.
FIX:
This GCC issue only cause the registration failure of the kretprobe event
which doesn't need debuginfo. So, stop using debuginfo for retprobe.
map will be used to query the probe function address.

Replace build_id byte array with struct build_id object and all the code
that references it.
The objective is to carry size together with build id array, so it's
better to keep both together.
This is preparatory change for following patches, and there's no
functional change.

Since 'perf probe' heavily depends on debuginfo, debuginfod gives us
many benefits on the 'perf probe' command on remote machine.
Especially, this will be helpful for the embedded devices which will not
have enough storage, or boot with a cross-build kernel whose source code
is in the host machine.
This will work as similar to commit c7a14fdcb3 ("perf build-ids:
Fall back to debuginfod query if debuginfo not found")

'perf probe' uses ref_reloc_sym to adjust symbol offset address from
debuginfo address or ref_reloc_sym based address, but that is misusing
reloc_sym->addr and reloc_sym->unrelocated_addr. If map is not
relocated (map->reloc == 0), we can use reloc_sym->addr as unrelocated
address instead of reloc_sym->unrelocated_addr.
This usually does not happen. If we have a non-stripped ELF binary, we
will use it for map and debuginfo, if not, we use only kallsyms without
debuginfo. Thus, the map is always relocated (ELF and DWARF binary) or
not relocated (kallsyms).
However, if we allow the combination of debuginfo and kallsyms based map
(like using debuginfod), we have to check the map->reloc and choose the
collect address of reloc_sym.

Warn if the probe target function is a GNU indirect function (GNU_IFUNC)
because it may not be what the user wants to probe.
The GNU indirect function ( https://sourceware.org/glibc/wiki/GNU_IFUNC )
is the dynamic symbol solved at runtime. An IFUNC function is a selector
which is invoked from the ELF loader, but the symbol address of the
function which will be modified by the IFUNC is the same as the IFUNC in
the symbol table. This can confuse users trying to probe such functions.
For example, memcpy is an IFUNC.

And the event is invoked from the ELF loader instead of the target
program's main code.
Moreover, at this moment, we can not probe on the function which will
be selected by the IFUNC, because it is determined at runtime. But
uprobe will be prepared before running the target binary.
Thus, I decided to warn user when 'perf probe' detects that the probe
point is on an GNU IFUNC symbol. Someone who wants to probe an IFUNC
symbol to debug the IFUNC function can ignore this warning.

Since commit 03db8b583d ("perf tools: Fix
maps__find_symbol_by_name()") introduced map address range check in
maps__find_symbol_by_name(), we can not get "_etext" from kernel map
because _etext is placed on the edge of the kernel .text section (=
kernel map in perf.)
To fix this issue, this checks the address correctness by map address
range information (map->start and map->end) instead of using _etext
address.
This can cause an error if the target inlined function is embedded in
both __init function and normal function.
For exaample, request_resource() is a normal function but also embedded
in __init reserve_setup(). In this case, the probe point in
reserve_setup() must be skipped.
However, without this fix, it failes to setup all probe points:

Fix to check kprobe blacklist address correctly with relocated address
by adjusting debuginfo address.
Since the address in the debuginfo is same as objdump, it is different
from relocated kernel address with KASLR. Thus, 'perf probe' always
misses to catch the blacklisted addresses.
Without this patch, 'perf probe' can not detect the blacklist addresses
on a KASLR enabled kernel.

Since the commit 6a13a0d7b4 ("ftrace/kprobe: Show the maxactive number
on kprobe_events") introduced to show the instance number of kretprobe
events, the length of the 1st format of the kprobe event will not 1, but
it can be longer. This caused a parser error in perf-probe.
Skip the length check the 1st format of the kprobe event to accept this
instance number.
Without this fix:

And pick the shortest name: 'struct maps'.
The split existed because we used to have two groups of maps, one for
functions and one for variables, but that only complicated things,
sometimes we needed to figure out what was at some address and then had
to first try it on the functions group and if that failed, fall back to
the variables one.
That split is long gone, so for quite a while we had only one struct
maps per struct map_groups, simplify things by combining those structs.
First patch is the minimum needed to merge both, follow up patches will
rename 'thread->mg' to 'thread->maps', etc.

Trace a magic number as immediate value if the target variable is not
found at some probe points which is based on one probe event.
This feature is good for the case if you trace a source code line with
some local variables, which is compiled into several instructions and
some of the variables are optimized out on some instructions.
Even if so, with this feature, perf probe trace a magic number instead
of such disappeared variables and fold those probes on one event.

Support multiprobe event if the event is based on function and lines and
kernel supports it. In this case, perf probe creates the first probe
with an event, and tries to append following probes on that event, since
those probes must be on the same source code line.

Generate event name from function name with line number as
<function>_L<line_number>. Note that this is only for the new event
which is defined by the line number of function (except for line 0).
If there is another event on same line, you have to use
"-f" option. In that case, the new event has "_1" suffix.

Since add_probe_trace_event() can reuse tf->tevs[i] after calling
clear_probe_trace_event(), this can make perf-probe crash if the 1st
attempt of probe event finding fails to find an event argument, and the
2nd attempt fails to find probe point.

Remove the last unneeded use of cache.h in a header, we can check where
it is really needed, i.e. we can remove it and be sure that it isn't
being obtained indirectly.
This is an old file, used by now incorrectly in many places, so it was
providing includes needed indirectly, fixup this fallout.

We don't segfault.
clear_perf_probe_event() was zeroing the whole pev, and since the switch
to zfree() for the members in the pev, that memset() was removed, which
left nargs with its original value, in the above case 1.
With the memset the same pev could be passed to clear_perf_probe_event()
multiple times, since all it would have would be zeroes, and free()
accepts zero, the loop would not happen and we would just memset it
again to zeroes.
Without it we got that segfault, so zero nargs to keep it like it was,
next cset will avoid calling clear_perf_probe_event() for the same pevs
in case of failure.

In places where the equivalent was already being done, i.e.:
free(a);
a = NULL;
And in placs where struct members are being freed so that if we have
some erroneous reference to its struct, then accesses to freed members
will result in segfaults, which we can detect faster than use after free
to areas that may still have something seemingly valid.

We got the sane_ctype.h headers from git and kept using it so far, but
since that code originally came from the kernel sources to the git
sources, perhaps its better to just use the one in the kernel, so that
we can leverage tools/perf/check_headers.sh to be notified when our copy
gets out of sync, i.e. when fixes or goodies are added to the code we've
copied.
This will help with things like tools/lib/string.c where we want to have
more things in common with the kernel, such as strim(), skip_spaces(),
etc so as to go on removing the things that we have in tools/perf/util/
and instead using the code in the kernel, indirectly and removing things
like EXPORT_SYMBOL(), etc, getting notified when fixes and improvements
are made to the original code.
Hopefully this also should help with reducing the difference of code
hosted in tools/ to the one in the kernel proper.

Add user memory access attribute for kprobe event arguments.
If a given 'local variable' is in user-space, User can
specify memory access method by '@user' suffix. This is
not only for string but also for data structure.
If we access a field of data structure in user memory from
kernel on some arch, it will fail. e.g.
perf probe -a "sched_setscheduler param->sched_priority"
This will fail to access the "param->sched_priority" because
the param is __user pointer. Instead, we can now specify
@user suffix for such argument.
perf probe -a "sched_setscheduler param->sched_priority@user"
Note that kernel memory access with "@user" must always fail
on any arch.

Go over the tools/ files that are maintained in Arnaldo's tree and
fix common typos: half of them were in comments, the other half
in JSON files.
No change in functionality intended.

This was split from a larger patch as there are code that is,
additionally, maintained outside the kernel tree, so to ease
cherry-picking and/or backporting, split this into multiple patches.
Just typos in comments, no need to backport, reducing the possibility of

Remove the split of symbol tables for data (MAP__VARIABLE) and for
functions (MAP__FUNCTION), its unneeded and there were various places
doing two lookups to find a symbol, so simplify this.
We still will consider only the symbols that matched the filters in
place, i.e. see the (elf_(sec,sym)|symbol_type)__filter() routines in
the patch, just so that we consider only the same symbols as before,
to reduce the possibility of regressions.
All the tests on 50-something build environments, in varios versions
of lots of distros and cross build environments were performed without
build regressions, as usual with all pull requests the other tests were
also performed: 'perf test' and 'make -C tools/perf build-test'.
Also this was done at a great granularity so that regressions can be
bisected more easily.

Commit d80406453a ("perf symbols: Allow user probes on versioned
symbols") allows user to find default versioned symbols (with "@@") in
map. However, it did not enable normal versioned symbol (with "@") for
perf-probe. E.g.

Add __return suffix for function return events automatically. Without
this, user have to give --force option and will see the number suffix
for each event like "function_1", which is not easy to recognize.
Instead, this adds __return suffix to it automatically. E.g.

The commit 9aaf5a5f47 ("perf probe: Check kprobes blacklist when
adding new events"), 'perf probe' supports checking the blacklist of the
fuctions which can not be probed. But the checking condition is wrong,
that the end_addr of the symbol which is the start_addr of the next
symbol can't be included.

Teach buildid-cache how to add, remove, and update binary objects from
other mount namespaces. Allow probe events tracing binaries in
different namespaces to add their objects to the probe and build-id
caches too. As a handy side effect, this also lets us access SDT probes
in binaries from alternate mount namespaces.

Teaches perf how to place a uprobe on a file that's in a different mount
namespace. The user must add the probe using the --target-ns argument
to perf probe. Once it has been placed, it may be recorded against
without further namespace-specific commands.

In commit 613f050d68 ("perf probe: Fix to probe on gcc generated
functions in modules"), the offset from symbol is, incorrectly, added
to the trace point address. This leads to incorrect probe trace points
for inlined functions and when using relative line number on symbols.

There are many SDT markers in powerpc whose uprobe definition goes
beyond current MAX_CMDLEN, especially when target filename is long and

We indicate support for accepting sym+offset with kretprobes through a
line in ftrace README. Parse the same to identify support and choose the
appropriate format for kprobe_events.

Fix to probe on gcc generated functions on modules. Since
probing on a module is based on its symbol name, it should
be adjusted on actual symbols.
E.g. without this fix, perf probe shows probe definition
on non-exist symbol as below.
$ perf probe -m build-x86_64/net/netfilter/nf_nat.ko -F in_range*
in_range.isra.12
$ perf probe -m build-x86_64/net/netfilter/nf_nat.ko -D in_range

With this fix, perf probe correctly shows a probe on
gcc-generated symbol.

Add error check codes on post processing and improve it for offline
probe events as:
- post processing fails if no matched symbol found in map(-ENOENT)
or strdup() failed(-ENOMEM).
- Even if the symbol name is the same, it updates symbol address

Fix perf-probe to show probe definition on gcc generated symbols for
offline kernel (including cross-arch kernel image).
gcc sometimes optimizes functions and generate new symbols with suffixes
such as ".constprop.N" or ".isra.N" etc. Since those symbol names are
not recorded in DWARF, we have to find correct generated symbols from
offline ELF binary to probe on it (kallsyms doesn't correct it). For
online kernel or uprobes we don't need it because those are rebased on
_text, or a section relative address.
E.g. Without this:
$ perf probe -k build-arm/vmlinux -F __slab_alloc*
__slab_alloc.constprop.9
$ perf probe -k build-arm/vmlinux -D __slab_alloc
p:probe/__slab_alloc __slab_alloc+0
If you put above definition on target machine, it should fail
because there is no __slab_alloc in kallsyms.
With this fix, perf probe shows correct probe definition on
__slab_alloc.constprop.9:

Fix --funcs (-F) option to show correct symbols for offline module.
Since previous perf-probe uses machine__findnew_module_map() for offline
module, even if user passes a module file (with full path) which is for
other architecture, perf-probe always tries to load symbol map for
current kernel module.
This fix uses dso__new_map() to load the map from given binary as same
as a map for user applications.

Since 'perf probe' supports cross-arch probes, it is possible to analyze
different arch kernel image which has different bits-per-long.
In that case, it fails to get the module name because it uses the
MOD_NAME_OFFSET macro based on the host machine bits-per-long, instead
of the target arch bits-per-long.
This fixes above issue by changing modname-offset based on the target
archs bit width. This is ok because linux kernel uses LP64 model on
64bit arch.
E.g. without this (on x86_64, and target module is arm32):
$ perf probe -m build-arm/fs/configfs/configfs.ko -D configfs_lookup
p:probe/configfs_lookup :configfs_lookup+0
^-Here is an empty module name.
With this fix, you can see correct module name:
$ perf probe -m build-arm/fs/configfs/configfs.ko -D configfs_lookup
p:probe/configfs_lookup configfs:configfs_lookup+0

Cut off the characters which can not use for group name of uprobes
when making it based on executable filename.
For example, if the exec name is libstdc++.so, without this fix
perf probe generates "probe_libstdc++" as the group name, but
it is failed to set because '+' can not be used for group name.
With this fix perf accepts only alphabet, number or '_' for group
name, thus perf generates "probe_libstdc" as the group name.
E.g. with this fix, you can see the event name has no "+".

Introduce helper function instead of inline code and replace hardcoded
strings "$vars" and "$params" with their corresponding macros.
perf_probe_with_var() is not declared as static since it will be called
from different file in subsequent patch.

Ignore the buildid of running kernel when both of --definition and
--vmlinux is given because that kernel should be off-line.
This also skips post-processing of kprobe event for relocating symbol
and checking blacklist, because it can not be done on off-line kernel.
E.g. without this fix perf shows an error as below

Powerpc has Global Entry Point and Local Entry Point for functions. LEP
catches call from both the GEP and the LEP. Symbol table of ELF contains
GEP and Offset from which we can calculate LEP, but debuginfo does not
have LEP info.
Currently, perf prioritize symbol table over dwarf to probe on LEP for
ppc64le. But when user tries to probe with function parameter, we fall
back to using dwarf(i.e. GEP) and when function called via LEP, probe
will never hit.
For example:

For second case, perf probed on GEP. So when function will be called via
LEP, probe won't hit.

To resolve this issue, let's not prioritize symbol table, let perf
decide what it wants to use. Perf is already converting GEP to LEP when
it uses symbol table. When perf uses debuginfo, let it find LEP offset
form symbol table. This way we fall back to probe on LEP for all cases.
After patch:
$ sudo ./perf probe 'do_sys_open filename:string'
$ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events
p:probe/do_sys_open _text+3060904 filename_string=+0(%gpr4):string
$ sudo ./perf record -a -e probe:do_sys_open ls

If module is "module" then dso->short_name is "[module]". Substring
comparing is't enough: "raid10" matches to "[raid1]". This patch also
checks terminating zero in module name.

Adjust map->reloc offset for the unmapped address when finding
alternative symbol address from map, because KASLR can relocate the
kernel symbol address.
The same adjustment has been done when finding appropriate kernel symbol
address from map which was introduced by commit f90acac757 ("perf

Warn unmatched function filter correctly instead of warning
"symbol-loading error", since that can be a filter issue.
From the technical point of view, this adds a filter chech in map__load
and if there is a filter, it returns -2 (filter-out), instead of -1
(error), and perf-probe checks it and change message.
E.g. without this fix:
# perf probe -F rt_sp*
no symbols found in [kernel.kallsyms], maybe install a debug package?
Failed to load symbols in kernel
With this fix:
# perf probe -F rt_sp*
no symbols passed the given filter.
Failed to find symbols matched to "rt_sp*"

Support a special SDT probe format which can omit the '%' prefix only if
the SDT group name starts with "sdt_". So, for example both of
"%sdt_libc:setjump" and "sdt_libc:setjump" are acceptable for perf probe
--add.
E.g. without this:
# perf probe -a sdt_libc:setjmp

With this:
# perf probe -a sdt_libc:setjmp

Support @BUILDID or @FILE suffix for SDT events. This allows perf to add
probes on SDTs/pre-cached events on given FILE or the file which has
given BUILDID (also, this complements BUILDID.)
For example, both gcc and libstdc++ has same SDTs as below. If you
would like to add a probe on sdt_libstdcxx:catch on gcc, you can do as
below.

So, these are not really 'pre-defined events', i.e. we can't use them with
'perf record --event':

To have it really pre-defined we must use perf probe to get its definition from
the cache and set it up in the kernel, creating the tracepoint to _then_ use it
with 'perf record --event':

Oops, there is another gotcha here, we need that pesky '%' character:

You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

But then we added _two_ events, one with the name we expected, the other one
with a _ added, when doing the analysis we need to pay attention to who maps to
who.
And here is where we get to the point of this patch, which is to be able to
disambiguate those definitions for 'catch' in the build-id cache, but first we need
remove those events we just added:
[root@jouet ~]# perf probe -d %sdt_libstdcxx:catch
Oops, that didn't remove anything, we need to _remove_ that % char in this case:
[root@jouet ~]# perf probe -d sdt_libstdcxx:catch
Removed event: sdt_libstdcxx:catch
And we need to remove the other event added, i.e. I forgot to add a * at the end:
[root@jouet ~]# perf probe -d sdt_libstdcxx:catch*

Search SDT/cached event from all probe caches if user doesn't pass any
binary. With this, we don't have to specify target binary for SDT and
named cached events (which start with %).
E.g. without this, a target binary must be passed with -x.
# perf probe -x /usr/lib64/libc-2.20.so -a %sdt_libc:\*
With this change, we don't need it anymore.
# perf probe -a %sdt_libc:\*

Allo glob wildcard for reusing cached/SDT events. E.g.
# perf probe -x /usr/lib64/libc-2.20.so -a %sdt_libc:\*
This example adds probes for all SDT in libc.
Note that the SDTs must have been scanned by perf buildid-cache.

To improve usability, support %[PROVIDER:]SDTEVENT format to add new
probes on SDT and cached events.
e.g.

Fix to show correct error messages for $vars and $params because
those special variables requires debug information to find the
real variables or function parameters.
E.g. without this fix;

# perf probe -x /lib64/libc-2.23.so getaddrinfo \$params
Failed to write event: Invalid argument
Please upgrade your kernel to at least 3.14 to have access to feature $params
Error: Failed to add events.
----
Perf ends up with an error, but the message is not correct. With this
fix, perf shows correct error message as below.
----
# perf probe -x /lib64/libc-2.23.so getaddrinfo \$params
The /usr/lib64/libc-2.23.so file has no debug information.
Rebuild with -g, or install an appropriate debuginfo package.
Error: Failed to add events.

The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that
returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else.
But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the
function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided
buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that
instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine
Linux, where musl libc is used.
So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU
interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that
users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is
returned.

Allow user to set group name for adding new event. Note that user must
ensure that the group name doesn't conflict with existing group name
carefully.
E.g. Existing group name can conflict with other events. Especially,
using the group name reserved for kernel modules can hide kernel
embedded events when loading modules.

Before analyzing debuginfo, try to find a corresponding entry from probe
cache always. This does not depend on --cache, the --cache enables to
store/update cache, but looking up the cache is always enabled.
