Instead of using writable copy for module text sections, temporarily remap
the memory allocated from execmem's ROX cache as writable and restore its
ROX permissions after the module is formed.
This will allow removing nasty games with writable copy in alternatives
patching on x86.

It's coming late in the merge cycle as there are a number of merge
conflicts with your tree now, and I wanted to make sure they were

Included in here is a bunch of driver core, PCI, OF, and platform rust
bindings (all acked by the different subsystem maintainers), hence the
merge conflict with the rust tree, and some driver core api updates to
mark things as const, which will also require some fixups due to new
stuff coming in through other trees in this merge window.
There are also a bunch of debugfs updates from Al, and there is at least
one user that does have a regression with these, but Al is working on
tracking down the fix for it. In my use (and everyone else's linux-next
use), it does not seem like a big issue at the moment.

Switch away from using sha1 for module signing by default and use the
more modern sha512 instead, which is what among others Arch, Fedora,
RHEL, and Ubuntu are currently using for their kernels.
Sha1 has not been considered secure against well-funded opponents since
2005[1]; since 2011 the NIST and other organizations furthermore
recommended its replacement[2]. This is why OpenSSL on RHEL9, Fedora
Linux 41+[3], and likely some other current and future distributions
reject the creation of sha1 signatures, which leads to a build error of
allmodconfig configurations:

module_enable_rodata_ro() is called twice, once before module init
to set rodata sections readonly and once after module init to set
rodata_after_init section readonly.
The second time, only the rodata_after_init section needs to be
set to read-only, no need to re-apply it to already set rodata.
Split module_enable_rodata_ro() in two.

A kobject is meant to manage the lifecycle of some resource.
However the module sysfs code only creates a kobject to get a
"notes" subdirectory in sysfs.
This can be achieved easier and cheaper by using a sysfs group.
Switch the notes attribute code to such a group, similar to how the
section allocation in the same file already works.

The existing allocation logic manually stuffs two allocations into one.
This is hard to understand and of limited value, given that all the
section names are allocated on their own anyways.

If you know that your kernel modules will only ever be loaded by a newer
kernel, you can disable BASIC_MODVERSIONS to save space. This also
allows easy creation of test modules to see how tooling will respond to

Generate both the existing modversions format and the new extended one
when running modpost. Presence of this metadata in the final .ko is
guarded by CONFIG_EXTENDED_MODVERSIONS.
We no longer generate an error on long symbols in modpost if
CONFIG_EXTENDED_MODVERSIONS is set, as they can now be appropriately
encoded in the extended section. These symbols will be skipped in the
previous encoding. An error will still be generated if
CONFIG_EXTENDED_MODVERSIONS is not set.

Adds a new format for MODVERSIONS which stores each field in a separate
ELF section. This initially adds support for variable length names, but
could later be used to add additional fields to MODVERSIONS in a
backwards compatible way if needed. Any new fields will be ignored by
old user tooling, unlike the current format where user tooling cannot
tolerate adjustments to the format (for example making the name field
longer).
Since PPC munges its version records to strip leading dots, we reproduce
the munging for the new format. Other architectures do not appear to
have architecture-specific usage of this information.

Add a basic DWARF parser, which uses libdw to traverse the debugging
information in an object file and looks for functions and variables.
In follow-up patches, this will be expanded to produce symbol versions

Commit 71810db27c ("modversions: treat symbol CRCs as 32 bit
quantities") changed the CRC fields to s32 because the __kcrctab and
__kcrctab_gpl sections contained relative references to the actual
CRC values stored in the .rodata section when CONFIG_MODULE_REL_CRCS=y.
Commit 7b4537199a ("kbuild: link symbol CRCs at final link, removing
CONFIG_MODULE_REL_CRCS") removed this complexity. Now, the __kcrctab
and __kcrctab_gpl sections directly contain the CRC values in all cases.
The genksyms tool outputs unsigned 32-bit CRC values, so u32 is preferred
over s32.
No functional changes are intended.
Regardless of this change, the CRC value is assigned to the u32 variable
'crcval' before the comparison, as seen in kernel/module/version.c:
crcval = *crc;
It was previously mandatory (but now optional) in order to avoid sign
extension because the following line previously compared 'unsigned long'
and 's32':

return 1;
versions[i].crc is still 'unsigned long' for backward compatibility.

When a module gets unloaded there is a possibility that some of the
allocations it made are still used and therefore the allocation tags
corresponding to these allocations are still referenced. As such, the
memory for these tags can't be freed. This is currently handled as an
abnormal situation and module's data section is not being unloaded. To
handle this situation without keeping module's data in memory, allow
codetags with longer lifespan than the module to be loaded into their own
separate memory. The in-use memory areas and gaps after module unloading
in this separate memory are tracked using maple trees. Allocation tags
arrange their separate memory so that it is virtually contiguous and that
will allow simple allocation tag indexing later on in this patchset. The
size of this virtually contiguous memory is set to store up to 100000
allocation tags.

In order to support ROX allocations for module text, it is necessary to
handle modifications to the code, such as relocations and alternatives
patching, without write access to that memory.
One option is to use text patching, but this would make module loading
extremely slow and will expose executable code that is not finally formed.
A better way is to have memory allocated with ROX permissions contain
invalid instructions and keep a writable, but not executable copy of the
module text. The relocations and alternative patches would be done on the
writable copy using the addresses of the ROX memory. Once the module is
completely ready, the updated text will be copied to ROX memory using text
patching in one go and the writable copy will be freed.
Add support for that to module initialization code and provide necessary
interfaces in execmem.

With few exceptions emptiness checks are done as fd_file(...) in boolean
context (usually something like if (!fd_file(f))...); those will be
taken care of later.
However, there's a couple of places where we do those checks as
'store fd_file(...) into a variable, then check if this variable is
NULL' and those are harder to spot.
Get rid of those now.
use fd_empty() instead of extracting file and then checking it for NULL.

Validate properties of the strtab that are depended on elsewhere, but
were previously unchecked:
* String table nonempty (offset 0 is valid)
* String table has a leading NUL (offset 0 corresponds to "")
* String table is NUL terminated (strfoo functions won't run out of the
table while reading).
* All symbols names are inbounds of the string table.

Factor out the validation of section names.
There are two behavioral changes:
1. Previously, we did not validate non-SHF_ALLOC sections.
This may have once been safe, as find_sec skips non-SHF_ALLOC
sections, but find_any_sec, which will be used to load BTF if that is
enabled, ignores the SHF_ALLOC flag. Since there's no need to support
invalid section names, validate all of them, not just SHF_ALLOC
sections.
2. Section names were validated *after* accessing them for the purposes
of detecting ".modinfo" and ".gnu.linkonce.this_module". They are now
checked prior to the access, which could avoid bad accesses with
malformed modules.

introduced a set of memory regions for the module layout sharing the
same attributes. However, it didn't update the kmemleak scanned areas
which intended to limit kmemleak scan to sections containing writable
data. This means sections such as .text and .rodata are scanned by
kmemleak.
Refine the scanned areas for modules by limiting it to MOD_TEXT and
MOD_INIT_TEXT mod_mem regions.

The kernel configuration allows specifying a module compression mode. If
one is selected then each module gets compressed during
'make modules_install' and additionally one can also enable support for
a respective direct in-kernel decompression support. This means that the
decompression support cannot be enabled without the automatic compression.
Some distributions, such as the (open)SUSE family, use a signer service for
modules. A build runs on a worker machine but signing is done by a separate
locked-down server that is in possession of the signing key. The build
invokes 'make modules_install' to create a modules tree, collects
information about the modules, asks the signer service for their signature,
appends each signature to the respective module and compresses all modules.
When using this arrangment, the 'make modules_install' step produces
unsigned+uncompressed modules and the distribution's own build recipe takes
care of signing and compression later.
The signing support can be currently enabled without automatically signing
modules during 'make modules_install'. However, the in-kernel decompression
support can be selected only after first enabling automatic compression
during this step.
To allow only enabling the in-kernel decompression support without the
automatic compression during 'make modules_install', separate the
compression options similarly to the signing options, as follows:

* "Module compression" (MODULE_COMPRESS) is a new main switch for the
compression/decompression support. It replaces MODULE_COMPRESS_NONE.

compression type, one of GZ, XZ, ZSTD.
* "Automatically compress all modules" (MODULE_COMPRESS_ALL) is a new
option to enable module compression during 'make modules_install'. It
defaults to Y.
* "Support in-kernel module decompression" (MODULE_DECOMPRESS) enables
in-kernel decompression.

For any changes of struct fd representation we need to
turn existing accesses to fields into calls of wrappers.
Accesses to struct fd::flags are very few (3 in linux/file.h,
1 in net/socket.c, 3 in fs/overlayfs/file.c and 3 more in
explicit initializers).
Those can be dealt with in the commit converting to
new layout; accesses to struct fd::file are too many for that.
This commit converts (almost) all of f.file to
fd_file(f). It's not entirely mechanical ('file' is used as
a member name more than just in struct fd) and it does not
even attempt to distinguish the uses in pointer context from
those in boolean context; the latter will be eventually turned
into a separate helper (fd_empty()).
NOTE: mass conversion to fd_empty(), tempting as it
might be, is a bad idea; better do that piecewise in commit
that convert from fdget...() to CLASS(...).

The recursive aes-arm-bs module load situation reported by Russell King
is getting fixed in the crypto layer, but this in the meantime fixes the
"recursive load hangs forever" by just making the waiting for the first
module load be interruptible.
This should now match the old behavior before commit 9b9879fc03
("modules: catch concurrent module loads, treat them as idempotent"),
which used the different "wait for module to be ready" code in
module_patient_check_exists().
End result: a recursive module load will still block, but now a signal
will interrupt it and fail the second module load, at which point the
first module will successfully complete loading.

Russell King reported that the arm cbc(aes) crypto module hangs when
loaded, and Herbert Xu bisected it to commit 9b9879fc03 ("modules:
catch concurrent module loads, treat them as idempotent"), and noted:
"So what's happening here is that the first modprobe tries to load a
fallback CBC implementation, in doing so it triggers a load of the
exact same module due to module aliases.
IOW we're loading aes-arm-bs which provides cbc(aes). However, this
needs a fallback of cbc(aes) to operate, which is made out of the
generic cbc module + any implementation of aes, or ecb(aes). The
latter happens to also be provided by aes-arm-cb so that's why it
tries to load the same module again"
So loading the aes-arm-bs module ends up wanting to recursively load
itself, and the recursive load then ends up waiting for the original
module load to complete.
This is a regression, in that it used to be that we just tried to load
the module multiple times, and then as we went on to install it the
second time we would instead just error out because the module name
already existed.
That is actually also exactly what the original "catch concurrent loads"
patch did in commit 9828ed3f69 ("module: error out early on concurrent
load of the same module file"), but it turns out that it ends up being
racy, in that erroring out before the module has been fully initialized
will cause failures in dependent module loading.
See commit ac2263b588 (which was the revert of that "error out early")
commit for details about why erroring out before the module has been
initialized is actually fundamentally racy.
Now, for the actual recursive module load (as opposed to just
concurrently loading the same module twice), the race is not an issue.
At the same time it's hard for the kernel to see that this is recursion,
because the module load is always done from a usermode helper, so the
recursion is not some simple callchain within the kernel.
End result: this is not the real fix, but this at least adds a warning
for the situation (admittedly much too late for all the debugging pain
that Russell and Herbert went through) and if we can come to a
resolution on how to detect the recursion properly, this re-organizes
the code to make that easier.

This originally showed up while building with -O3, but later started
happening in other configurations as well, depending on inlining
decisions. The underlying issue is that the local 'name' variable is
always initialized to the be the same as 'buffer' in the called functions
that fill the buffer, which gcc notices while inlining, though it could
see that the address check always skips the copy.
The calling conventions here are rather unusual, as all of the internal
lookup functions (bpf_address_lookup, ftrace_mod_address_lookup,
ftrace_func_address_lookup, module_address_lookup and
kallsyms_lookup_buildid) already use the provided buffer and either return
the address of that buffer to indicate success, or NULL for failure,
but the callers are written to also expect an arbitrary other buffer
to be returned.
Rework the calling conventions to return the length of the filled buffer
instead of its address, which is simpler and easier to follow as well
as avoiding the warning. Leave only the kallsyms_lookup() calling conventions
unchanged, since that is called from 16 different functions and
adapting this would be a much bigger change.

Extend execmem parameters to accommodate more complex overrides of
module_alloc() by architectures.
This includes specification of a fallback range required by arm, arm64
and powerpc, EXECMEM_MODULE_DATA type required by powerpc, support for
allocation of KASAN shadow required by s390 and x86 and support for
late initialization of execmem required by arm64.
The core implementation of execmem_alloc() takes care of suppressing
warnings when the initial allocation fails but there is a fallback range
defined.

module_alloc() is used everywhere as a mean to allocate memory for code.
Beside being semantically wrong, this unnecessarily ties all subsystems
that need to allocate code, such as ftrace, kprobes and BPF to modules and
puts the burden of code allocation to the modules code.
Several architectures override module_alloc() because of various
constraints where the executable memory can be located and this causes
additional obstacles for improvements of code allocation.
Start splitting code allocation from modules by introducing execmem_alloc()
and execmem_free() APIs.
Initially, execmem_alloc() is a wrapper for module_alloc() and
execmem_free() is a replacement of module_memfree() to allow updating all
call sites to use the new APIs.
Since architectures define different restrictions on placement,
permissions, alignment and other parameters for memory that can be used by
different subsystems that allocate executable memory, execmem_alloc() takes
a type argument, that will be used to identify the calling subsystem and to
allow architectures define parameters for ranges suitable for that
subsystem.
No functional changes.

strncpy() is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings
[1] and as such we should prefer more robust and less ambiguous string
interfaces. The goal is to remove its use completely [2].
namebuf is eventually cleaned of any trailing llvm suffixes using
strstr(). This hints that namebuf should be NUL-terminated.

Due to this, use strscpy() over strncpy() as it guarantees
NUL-termination on the destination buffer. Drop the -1 from the length

If UNUSED_KSYMS_WHITELIST is a file generated
before Kbuild runs, and the source tree is in
a read-only filesystem, the developer must put
the file somewhere and specify an absolute
path to UNUSED_KSYMS_WHITELIST. This worked,
but if IKCONFIG=y, an absolute path is embedded
into .config and eventually into vmlinux, causing
the build to be less reproducible when building
on a different machine.
This patch makes the handling of
UNUSED_KSYMS_WHITELIST to be similar to
MODULE_SIG_KEY.
First, check if UNUSED_KSYMS_WHITELIST is an
absolute path, just as before this patch. If so,
use the path as is.
If it is a relative path, use wildcard to check
the existence of the file below objtree first.
If it does not exist, fall back to the original
behavior of adding $(srctree)/ before the value.
After this patch, the developer can put the generated
file in objtree, then use a relative path against
objtree in .config, eradicating any absolute paths
that may be evaluated differently on different machines.

Skip freeing module's data section if there are non-zero allocation tags
because otherwise, once these allocations are freed, the access to their
code tag would cause UAF.

Deduplicate ->read() callbacks of bin_attributes which are backed by a
simple buffer in memory:
Use the newly introduced sysfs_bin_attr_simple_read() helper instead,
either by referencing it directly or by declaring such bin_attributes
with BIN_ATTR_SIMPLE_RO() or BIN_ATTR_SIMPLE_ADMIN_RO().
Aside from a reduction of LoC, this shaves off a few bytes from vmlinux
(304 bytes on an x86_64 allyesconfig).
No functional change intended.

broke iwd. iwd uses the KEYCTL_PKEY_* UAPIs via its dependency libell,
and apparently it is relying on SHA-1 signature support. These UAPIs
are fairly obscure, and their documentation does not mention which
algorithms they support. iwd really should be using a properly
supported userspace crypto library instead. Regardless, since something
broke we have to revert the change.
It may be possible that some parts of this commit can be reinstated
without breaking iwd (e.g. probably the removal of MODULE_SIG_SHA1), but
for now this just does a full revert to get things working again.

The synchronization here is to ensure the ordering of freeing of a module
init so that it happens before W+X checking. It is worth noting it is not
that the freeing was not happening, it is just that our sanity checkers
raced against the permission checkers which assume init memory is already
gone.
Commit 1a7b7d9220 ("modules: Use vmalloc special flag") moved calling
do_free_init() into a global workqueue instead of relying on it being
called through call_rcu(..., do_free_init), which used to allowed us call
do_free_init() asynchronously after the end of a subsequent grace period.
The move to a global workqueue broke the gaurantees for code which needed
to be sure the do_free_init() would complete with rcu_barrier(). To fix
this callers which used to rely on rcu_barrier() must now instead use
flush_work(&init_free_wq).
Without this fix, we still could encounter false positive reports in W+X
checking since the rcu_barrier() here can not ensure the ordering now.
Even worse, the rcu_barrier() can introduce significant delay. Eric
Chanudet reported that the rcu_barrier introduces ~0.1s delay on a
PREEMPT_RT kernel.

set_memory_ro(), set_memory_nx(), set_memory_x() and other helpers
can fail and return an error. In that case the memory might not be
protected as expected and the module loading has to be aborted to
avoid security issues.
Check return value of all calls to set_memory_XX() and handle
error if any.
Add a check to not call set_memory_XX() on NULL pointers as some
architectures may not like it allthough numpages is always 0 in that
case. This also avoid a useless call to set_vm_flush_reset_perms().

A couple of architectures seem concerned about calling set_memory_ro()
and set_memory_x() too frequently and have implemented a version of
set_memory_rox(), see commit 60463628c9 ("x86/mm: Implement native
set_memory_rox()") and commit 22e99fa564 ("s390/mm: implement
set_memory_rox()")
Use set_memory_rox() in modules when STRICT_MODULES_RWX is set.

Just one cleanup and one documentation improvement change. No functional

We consistently switched from kmalloc() to vmalloc() in module
decompression to prevent potential memory allocation failures with large
modules, however vmalloc() is not as memory-efficient and fast as
kmalloc().
Since we don't know in general the size of the workspace required by the
decompression algorithm, it is more reasonable to use kvmalloc()
consistently, also considering that we don't have special memory
requirements here.

Prepare for the coming implementation by GCC and Clang of the __counted_by
attribute. Flexible array members annotated with __counted_by can have
their accesses bounds-checked at run-time checking via CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS
(for array indexing) and CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE (for strcpy/memcpy-family
functions).
As found with Coccinelle[1], add __counted_by for struct module_notes_attrs.

Use a similar approach as commit a419beac4a ("module/decompress: use
vmalloc() for zstd decompression workspace") and replace kmalloc() with
vmalloc() also for the gzip module decompression workspace.
In this case the workspace is represented by struct inflate_workspace
that can be fairly large for kmalloc() and it can potentially lead to
allocation errors on certain systems:

sha224 does not provide enough security against collision attacks
relative to the default keys used for signing (RSA 4k & P-384). Also
sha224 never became popular, as sha256 got widely adopter ahead of
sha224 being introduced.

Removes support for sha1 signed kernel modules, importing sha1 signed
x.509 certificates.
rsa-pkcs1pad keeps sha1 padding support, which seems to be used by
virtio driver.
sha1 remains available as there are many drivers and subsystems using
it. Note only hmac(sha1) with secret keys remains cryptographically
secure.
In the kernel there are filesystems, IMA, tpm/pcr that appear to be
using sha1. Maybe they can all start to be slowly upgraded to
something else i.e. blake3, ParallelHash, SHAKE256 as needed.

module_init_layout_section() choses whether the core module loader
considers a section as init or not. This affects the placement of the
exit section when module unloading is disabled. This code will never run,
so it can be free()d once the module has been initialised.
arm and arm64 need to count the number of PLTs they need before applying
relocations based on the section name. The init PLTs are stored separately
so they can be free()d. arm and arm64 both use within_module_init() to
decide which list of PLTs to use when applying the relocation.
Because within_module_init()'s behaviour changes when module unloading
is disabled, both architecture would need to take this into account when
counting the PLTs.
Today neither architecture does this, meaning when module unloading is
disabled there are insufficient PLTs in the init section to load some
modules, resulting in warnings:

It has recently come to my attention that nvidia is circumventing the
protection added in 262e6ae708 ("modules: inherit
TAINT_PROPRIETARY_MODULE") by importing exports from their proprietary
modules into an allegedly GPL licensed module and then rexporting them.
Given that symbol_get was only ever intended for tightly cooperating
modules using very internal symbols it is logical to restrict it to
being used on EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL and prevent nvidia from costly DMCA
Circumvention of Access Controls law suites.
All symbols except for four used through symbol_get were already exported
as EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL, and the remaining four ones were switched over in
the preparation patches.

RISC-V has an extended form of mapping symbols that we use to encode
the ISA when it changes in the middle of an ELF. This trips up modpost
as a build failure, I haven't yet verified it yet but I believe the
kallsyms difference should result in stacks looking sane again.

Vegard Nossum pointed out two different problems with the error handling
in init_module_from_file():
(a) the idempotent loading code didn't clean up properly in some error
cases, leaving the on-stack 'struct idempotent' element still in
the hash table
(b) failure to read the module file would nonsensically update the
'invalid_kread_bytes' stat counter with the error value
The first error is quite nasty, in that it can then cause subsequent
idempotent loads of that same file to access stale stack contents of the
previous failure. The case may not happen in any normal situation
(explaining all the "Tested-by's on the original change), and requires
admin privileges, but syzkaller triggers random bad behavior as a
result:

The second error is fairly benign and just leads to nonsensical stats
(and has been around since the debug stats were added).
Vegard also provided a patch for the idempotent loading issue, but I'd
rather re-organize the code and make it more legible using another level
of helper functions than add the usual "goto out" error handling.

The changes queued up for v6.5-rc1 for modules are pretty tame, mostly
code removal of moving of code. Only two minor functional changes are
made, the only one which stands out is Sebastian Andrzej Siewior's
simplification of module reference counting by removing preempt_disable()
and that has been tested on linux-next for well over a month without
no regressions. I'm now, I guess, also a kitchen sink for some kallsyms
changes.

This is the new-and-improved attempt at avoiding huge memory load spikes
when the user space boot sequence tries to load hundreds (or even
thousands) of redundant duplicate modules in parallel.
See commit 9828ed3f69 ("module: error out early on concurrent load of
the same module file") for background and an earlier failed attempt that
was reverted.
That earlier attempt just said "concurrently loading the same module is
silly, just open the module file exclusively and return -ETXTBSY if
somebody else is already loading it".
While it is true that concurrent module loads of the same module is
silly, the reason that earlier attempt then failed was that the
concurrently loaded module would often be a prerequisite for another
module.
Thus failing to load the prerequisite would then cause cascading
failures of the other modules, rather than just short-circuiting that
one unnecessary module load.
At the same time, we still really don't want to load the contents of the
same module file hundreds of times, only to then wait for an eventually
successful load, and have everybody else return -EEXIST.
As a result, this takes another approach, and treats concurrent module
loads from the same file as "idempotent" in the inode. So if one module
load is ongoing, we don't start a new one, but instead just wait for the
first one to complete and return the same return value as it did.
So unlike the first attempt, this does not return early: the intent is
not to speed up the boot, but to avoid a thundering herd problem in
allocating memory (both physical and virtual) for a module more than
once.
Also note that this does change behavior: it used to be that when you
had concurrent loads, you'd have one "winner" that would return success,
and everybody else would return -EEXIST.
In contrast, this idempotent logic goes all Oprah on the problem, and
says "You are a winner! And you are a winner! We are ALL winners". But
since there's no possible actual real semantic difference between "you
loaded the module" and "somebody else already loaded the module", this
is more of a feel-good change than an actual honest-to-goodness semantic
change.
Of course, any true Johnny-come-latelies that don't get caught in the
concurrency filter will still return -EEXIST. It's no different from
not even getting a seat at an Oprah taping. That's life.

Commit 7b4537199a ("kbuild: link symbol CRCs at final link, removing
CONFIG_MODULE_REL_CRCS") made modpost output CRCs in the same way
whether the EXPORT_SYMBOL() is placed in *.c or *.S.
For further cleanups, this commit applies a similar approach to the
entire data structure of EXPORT_SYMBOL().
The EXPORT_SYMBOL() compilation is split into two stages.
When a source file is compiled, EXPORT_SYMBOL() will be converted into
a dummy symbol in the .export_symbol section.
For example,

They are mere markers to tell modpost the name, license, and namespace
of the symbols. They will be dropped from the final vmlinux and modules
because the *(.export_symbol) will go into /DISCARD/ in the linker script.
Then, modpost extracts all the information about EXPORT_SYMBOL() from the
.export_symbol section, and generates the final C code:

KSYMTAB_FUNC(bar, "_gpl", "BAR_NAMESPACE");
KSYMTAB_FUNC() (or KSYMTAB_DATA() if it is data) is expanded to struct
kernel_symbol that will be linked to the vmlinux or a module.
With this change, EXPORT_SYMBOL() works in the same way for *.c and *.S
files, providing the following benefits.
[1] Deprecate EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL()
In the old days, EXPORT_SYMBOL() was only available in C files. To export
a symbol in *.S, EXPORT_SYMBOL() was placed in a separate *.c file.
arch/arm/kernel/armksyms.c is one example written in the classic manner.
Commit 22823ab419 ("EXPORT_SYMBOL() for asm") removed this limitation.
Since then, EXPORT_SYMBOL() can be placed close to the symbol definition
in *.S files. It was a nice improvement.
However, as that commit mentioned, you need to use EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL()
for data objects on some architectures.
In the new approach, modpost checks symbol's type (STT_FUNC or not),
and outputs KSYMTAB_FUNC() or KSYMTAB_DATA() accordingly.
There are only two users of EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL:
EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL_GPL(empty_zero_page) (arch/ia64/kernel/head.S)
EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL(ia64_ivt) (arch/ia64/kernel/ivt.S)
They are transformed as follows and output into .vmlinux.export.c

The other EXPORT_SYMBOL users in ia64 assembly are output as
KSYMTAB_FUNC().
EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL() is now deprecated.
[2] merge <linux/export.h> and <asm-generic/export.h>
There are two similar header implementations:
include/linux/export.h for .c files
include/asm-generic/export.h for .S files
Ideally, the functionality should be consistent between them, but they
tend to diverge.
Commit 8651ec01da ("module: add support for symbol namespaces.") did
not support the namespace for *.S files.
This commit shifts the essential implementation part to C, which supports
EXPORT_SYMBOL_NS() for *.S files.
<asm/export.h> and <asm-generic/export.h> will remain as a wrapper of
<linux/export.h> for a while.
They will be removed after #include <asm/export.h> directives are all
replaced with #include <linux/export.h>.
[3] Implement CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS in one-pass algorithm (by a later commit)
When CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS is enabled, Kbuild recursively traverses
the directory tree to determine which EXPORT_SYMBOL to trim. If an
EXPORT_SYMBOL turns out to be unused by anyone, Kbuild begins the
second traverse, where some source files are recompiled with their
EXPORT_SYMBOL() tuned into a no-op.
We can do this better now; modpost can selectively emit KSYMTAB entries
that are really used by modules.
