sched/wake_q: Add helper to call wake_up_q after unlock with preemption disabled
A common pattern seen when wake_qs are used to defer a wakeup until after a lock is released is something like: preempt_disable(); raw_spin_unlock(lock); wake_up_q(wake_q); preempt_enable(); So create some raw_spin_unlock*_wake() helper functions to clean this up. torture: Add dowarn argument to torture_sched_setaffinity()
Current use cases of torture_sched_setaffinity() are well served by its unconditional warning on error. However, an upcoming use case for a preemption kthread needs to avoid warnings that might otherwise arise when that kthread attempted to bind itself to a CPU on its way offline. rt_mutex_slowlock_block() and rtlock_slowlock_locked() both unlock lock::wait_lock and then lock it later. This is unusual and sparse complains about it. locking/rt: Add sparse annotation for RCU.
Every lock, that becomes a sleeping lock on PREEMPT_RT, starts a RCU read side critical section. There is no sparse annotation for this and sparse complains about unbalanced locking. Add __acquires/ __releases for the RCU lock. This covers all but the trylock functions. A __cond_acquires() annotation didn't work. locking/mutex: Make mutex::wait_lock irq safe
With the proxy-execution series, we traverse the task->mutex->task blocked_on/owner chain in the scheduler core. We do this while holding the rq::lock to keep the structures in place while taking and releasing the alternating lock types. Since the mutex::wait_lock is one of the locks we will take in this way under the rq::lock in the scheduler core, we need to make sure that its usage elsewhere is irq safe. locking/ww_mutex: Adjust to lockdep nest_lock requirements
When using mutex_acquire_nest() with a nest_lock, lockdep refcounts the number of acquired lockdep_maps of mutexes of the same class, and also keeps a pointer to the first acquired lockdep_map of a class. That pointer is then used for various comparison-, printing- and checking purposes, but there is no mechanism to actively ensure that lockdep_map stays in memory. Instead, a warning is printed if the lockdep_map is freed and there are still held locks of the same lock class, even if the lockdep_map itself has been released. In the context of WW/WD transactions that means that if a user unlocks and frees a ww_mutex from within an ongoing ww transaction, and that mutex happens to be the first ww_mutex grabbed in the transaction, such a warning is printed and there might be a risk of a UAF. Note that this is only problem when lockdep is enabled and affects only dereferences of struct lockdep_map. Adjust to this by adding a fake lockdep_map to the acquired context and make sure it is the first acquired lockdep map of the associated ww_mutex class. Then hold it for the duration of the WW/WD transaction. This has the side effect that trying to lock a ww mutex *without* a ww_acquire_context but where a such context has been acquire, we'd see a lockdep splat. The test-ww_mutex.c selftest attempts to do that, so modify that particular test to not acquire a ww_acquire_context if it is not going to be used. The dependency on con->device_lock() is mutual. Any code taking the driver specific lock has to acquire the related nbcon console context as well. For example, see the new uart_port_lock() API. It provides the necessary synchronization against emergency and panic contexts where the messages are flushed only under the new per-console lock. Maybe surprisingly, a quite tricky part is the decision how to flush the consoles in various situations. It has to take into account: - message priority: normal, emergency, panic - scheduling context: task, atomic, deferred_legacy - registered consoles: boot, legacy, nbcon - threads are running: early boot, suspend, shutdown, panic - caller: printk(), pr_flush(), printk_flush_in_panic(), console_unlock(), console_start(), ... The primary decision is made in printk_get_console_flush_type(). It creates a hint what the caller should do: - flush nbcon consoles directly or via the kthread - call the legacy loop (console_unlock()) directly or via irq_work The existing behavior is preserved for the legacy consoles. The only exception is that they are not longer flushed directly from printk() in panic() before CPUs are stopped. But this blocking happens only when at least one nbcon console is registered. The motivation is to increase a chance to produce the crash dump. They legacy consoles might create a deadlock in compare with nbcon consoles. The nbcon console should allow to see the messages even when the crash dump fails. There are three possible ways how nbcon consoles are flushed: - The per-nbcon-console kthread is responsible for flushing messages added with the normal priority. This is the default mode. - The legacy loop, aka console_unlock(), is used when there is still a boot console registered. There is no easy way how to match an early console driver with a nbcon console driver. And the console_lock() provides the only reliable serialization at the moment. The legacy loop uses either con->write_atomic() or con->write_thread() callbacks depending on whether it is allowed to schedule. lockdep: Mark emergency sections in lockdep splats
Mark emergency sections wherever multiple lines of lock debugging output are generated. In an emergency section, every printk() call will attempt to directly flush to the consoles using the EMERGENCY priority. Note that debug_show_all_locks() and lockdep_print_held_locks() rely on their callers to enter the emergency section. This is because these functions can also be called in non-emergency situations (such as sysrq). rtmutex: Drop rt_mutex::wait_lock before scheduling
rt_mutex_handle_deadlock() is called with rt_mutex::wait_lock held. In the
good case it returns with the lock held and in the deadlock case it emits a
warning and goes into an endless scheduling loop with the lock held, which
triggers the 'scheduling in atomic' warning.
Unlock rt_mutex::wait_lock in the dead lock case before issuing the warning
and dropping into the schedule for ever loop.

sched/rt: Clean up usage of rt_task()
rt_task() checks if a task has RT priority. But depends on your dictionary, this could mean it belongs to RT class, or is a 'realtime' task, which includes RT and DL classes. Since this has caused some confusion already on discussion [1], it seemed a clean up is due. I define the usage of rt_task() to be tasks that belong to RT class. Make sure that it returns true only for RT class and audit the users and replace the ones required the old behavior with the new realtime_task() which returns true for RT and DL classes. Introduce similar realtime_prio() to create similar distinction to rt_prio() and update the users that required the old behavior to use the new function. Move MAX_DL_PRIO to prio.h so it can be used in the new definitions. Document the functions to make it more obvious what is the difference between them. PI-boosted tasks is a factor that must be taken into account when choosing which function to use. Rename task_is_realtime() to realtime_task_policy() as the old name is confusing against the new realtime_task(). No functional changes were intended. This means we have no practical limit on the number of counters, and a new tagged union format that's easy to extend. lockdep: lockdep_set_notrack_class()
Add a new helper to disable lockdep tracking entirely for a given class. This is needed for bcachefs, which takes too many btree node locks for lockdep to track. Instead, we have a single lockdep_map for "btree_trans has any btree nodes locked", which makes more since given that we have centralized lock management and a cycle detector. locking/local_lock: Add local nested BH locking infrastructure.
Add local_lock_nested_bh() locking. It is based on local_lock_t and the naming follows the preempt_disable_nested() example. For !PREEMPT_RT + !LOCKDEP it is a per-CPU annotation for locking assumptions based on local_bh_disable(). The macro is optimized away during compilation. For !PREEMPT_RT + LOCKDEP the local_lock_nested_bh() is reduced to the usual lock-acquire plus lockdep_assert_in_softirq() - ensuring that BH is disabled. For PREEMPT_RT local_lock_nested_bh() acquires the specified per-CPU lock. It does not disable CPU migration because it relies on local_bh_disable() disabling CPU migration. With LOCKDEP it performans the usual lockdep checks as with !PREEMPT_RT. Due to include hell the softirq check has been moved spinlock.c. The intention is to use this locking in places where locking of a per-CPU variable relies on BH being disabled. Instead of treating disabled bottom halves as a big per-CPU lock, PREEMPT_RT can use this to reduce the locking scope to what actually needs protecting. A side effect is that it also documents the protection scope of the per-CPU variables. Using of devm API leads to a certain order of releasing resources. So all dependent resources which are not devm-wrapped should be deleted with respect to devm-release order. Mutex is one of such objects that often is bound to other resources and has no own devm wrapping. Since mutex_destroy() actually does nothing in non-debug builds frequently calling mutex_destroy() is just ignored which is safe for now but wrong formally and can lead to a problem if mutex_destroy() will be extended so introduce devm_mutex_init(). The 'inc' parameter of lockevent_add() and the cond parameter of lockevent_cond_inc() are only evaluated when CONFIG_LOCK_EVENT_COUNTS is on. That can cause problem if those parameters are expressions with side effect like a "++". Fix this by evaluating those non-event parameters once even if CONFIG_LOCK_EVENT_COUNTS is off. This will also eliminate the need of the __maybe_unused attribute to the wait_early local variable in pv_wait_node(). locking/mutex: Document that mutex_unlock() is non-atomic
I have seen several cases of attempts to use mutex_unlock() to release an object such that the object can then be freed by another task. This is not safe because mutex_unlock(), in the MUTEX_FLAG_WAITERS && !MUTEX_FLAG_HANDOFF case, accesses the mutex structure after having marked it as unlocked; so mutex_unlock() requires its caller to ensure that the mutex stays alive until mutex_unlock() returns. If MUTEX_FLAG_WAITERS is set and there are real waiters, those waiters have to keep the mutex alive, but we could have a spurious MUTEX_FLAG_WAITERS left if an interruptible/killable waiter bailed between the points where __mutex_unlock_slowpath() did the cmpxchg reading the flags and where it acquired the wait_lock. ( With spinlocks, that kind of code pattern is allowed and, from what I remember, used in several places in the kernel. ) Document this, such a semantic difference between mutexes and spinlocks is fairly unintuitive. lockdep: Fix block chain corruption
Kent reported an occasional KASAN splat in lockdep. Mark then noted:
> I suspect the dodgy access is to chain_block_buckets[-1], which hits the last 4

That would mean @size == 0, at which point size_to_bucket() returns -1
and the above happens.
alloc_chain_hlocks() has 'size - req', for the first with the
precondition 'size >= rq', which allows the 0.
This code is trying to split a block, del_chain_block() takes what we
need, and add_chain_block() puts back the remainder, except in the
above case the remainder is 0 sized and things go sideways.

locktorture: Add call_rcu_chains module parameter
When running locktorture on large systems, there will normally be enough RCU activity to ensure that there is a grace period in flight at all times. However, on smaller systems, RCU might well be idle the majority of the time. This situation can be inconvenient in cases where the RCU CPU stall warning is part of the debugging process. This commit therefore adds an call_rcu_chains module parameter to locktorture, allowing the user to specify the desired number of self-propagating call_rcu() chains. For good measure, immediately before invoking call_rcu(), the self-propagating RCU callback invokes start_poll_synchronize_rcu() to force the immediate start of a grace period, with the call_rcu() forcing another to start shortly thereafter. Booting with locktorture.call_rcu_chains=2 increases the probability of a stuck locking primitive resulting in an RCU CPU stall warning from about 25% to nearly 100%. Signed-off-by: Paul E. I've seen what appears to be livelocks in the stress_inorder_work() function, and looking at the code it is clear we can have a case where we continually retry acquiring the locks and never check to see if we have passed the specified timeout. This patch reworks that function so we always check the timeout before iterating through the loop again. locking/ww_mutex/test: Fix potential workqueue corruption
In some cases running with the test-ww_mutex code, I was seeing odd behavior where sometimes it seemed flush_workqueue was returning before all the work threads were finished. Often this would cause strange crashes as the mutexes would be freed while they were being used. Looking at the code, there is a lifetime problem as the controlling thread that spawns the work allocates the "struct stress" structures that are passed to the workqueue threads. Then when the workqueue threads are finished, they free the stress struct that was passed to them. Unfortunately the workqueue work_struct node is in the stress struct. Which means the work_struct is freed before the work thread returns and while flush_workqueue is waiting. It seems like a better idea to have the controlling thread both allocate and free the stress structures, so that we can be sure we don't corrupt the workqueue by freeing the structure prematurely. So this patch reworks the test to do so, and with this change I no longer see the early flush_workqueue returns. locking/ww_mutex/test: Use prng instead of rng to avoid hangs at bootup
Booting w/ qemu without kvm, and with 64 cpus, I noticed we'd sometimes hung task watchdog splats in get_random_u32_below() when using the test-ww_mutex stress test. While entropy exhaustion is no longer an issue, the RNG may be slower early in boot. The test-ww_mutex code will spawn off 128 threads (2x cpus) and each thread will call get_random_u32_below() a number of times to generate a random order of the 16 locks. This intense use takes time and without kvm, qemu can be slow enough that we trip the hung task watchdogs. For this test, we don't need true randomness, just mixed up orders for testing ww_mutex lock acquisitions, so it changes the logic to use the prng instead, which takes less time and avoids the watchdgos. With DEBUG_RT_MUTEXES enabled the fast-path rt_mutex_cmpxchg_acquire() always fails and all lock operations take the slow path. Provide a new helper inline rt_mutex_try_acquire() which maps to rt_mutex_cmpxchg_acquire() in the non-debug case. For the debug case it invokes rt_mutex_slowtrylock() which can acquire a non-contended rtmutex under full debug coverage. lockdep: fix static memory detection even more
On the parisc architecture, lockdep reports for all static objects which are in the __initdata section (e.g. "setup_done" in devtmpfs, "kthreadd_done" in init/main.c) this warning: INFO: trying to register non-static key. The warning itself is wrong, because those objects are in the __initdata section, but the section itself is on parisc outside of range from _stext to _end, which is why the static_obj() functions returns a wrong answer. While fixing this issue, I noticed that the whole existing check can be simplified a lot. Instead of checking against the _stext and _end symbols (which include code areas too) just check for the .data and .bss segments (since we check a data object). This can be done with the existing is_kernel_core_data() macro. In addition objects in the __initdata section can be checked with init_section_contains(), and is_kernel_rodata() allows keys to be in the _ro_after_init section. locking/rtmutex: Fix task->pi_waiters integrity
Henry reported that rt_mutex_adjust_prio_check() has an ordering
problem and puts the lie to the comment in [7]. Sharing the sort key
between lock->waiters and owner->pi_waiters *does* create problems,
since unlike what the comment claims, holding [L] is insufficient.

case a concurrent chain walk (B & C) will modify their resp. sort keys
in [7] while holding M1->wait_lock and M2->wait_lock. So holding [L]
is meaningless, they're different Ls.
This then gives rise to a race condition between [7] and [11], where
the requeue of pi_waiters will observe an inconsistent tree order.

Fixing this means either extending the range of the owner lock from
[10-13] to [6-13], with the immediate problem that this means [6-8]
hold both blocked and owner locks, or duplicating the sort key.
Since the locking in chain walk is horrible enough without having to
consider pi_lock nesting rules, duplicate the sort key instead.
By giving each tree their own sort key, the above race becomes
harmless, if C sees B at the old location, then B will correct things
(if they need correcting) when it walks up the chain and reaches A.
