39107ccbc6 bcache: switch from pages to folios in read_super()
Retrieve a folio from the page cache instead of a page. Removes a hidden
call to compound_head(). Then be sure to call folio_put() instead of
put_page() to release it. That doesn't save any calls to
compound_head(), just moves them around.

95b2e31e17 bcache: remove unnecessary select MIN_HEAP
After reverting the transition to the generic min heap library, bcache no
longer depends on MIN_HEAP.  The select entry can be removed to reduce
code size and shrink the kernel's attack surface.

This change effectively reverts the bcache-related part of commit
92a8b224b8 ("lib/min_heap: introduce non-inline versions of min heap API
functions").

This is part of a series of changes to address a performance regression
caused by the use of the generic min_heap implementation.

As reported by Robert, bcache now suffers from latency spikes, with P100
(max) latency increasing from 600 ms to 2.4 seconds every 5 minutes. 
These regressions degrade bcache's effectiveness as a low-latency cache
layer and lead to frequent timeouts and application stalls in production
environments.

48fd7ebe00 Revert "bcache: remove heap-related macros and switch to generic min_heap"
This reverts commit 866898efbb.

The generic bottom-up min_heap implementation causes performance
regression in invalidate_buckets_lru(), a hot path in bcache.  Before the
cache is fully populated, new_bucket_prio() often returns zero, leading to
many equal comparisons.  In such cases, bottom-up sift_down performs up to
2 * log2(n) comparisons, while the original top-down approach completes
with just O() comparisons, resulting in a measurable performance gap.

The performance degradation is further worsened by the non-inlined
min_heap API functions introduced in commit 92a8b224b8 ("lib/min_heap:
introduce non-inline versions of min heap API functions"), adding function
call overhead to this critical path.

As reported by Robert, bcache now suffers from latency spikes, with P100
(max) latency increasing from 600 ms to 2.4 seconds every 5 minutes. 
These regressions degrade bcache's effectiveness as a low-latency cache
layer and lead to frequent timeouts and application stalls in production
environments.

This revert aims to restore bcache's original low-latency behavior.

845f1f2d69 Revert "bcache: update min_heap_callbacks to use default builtin swap"
Patch series "bcache: Revert min_heap migration due to performance
regression".

This patch series reverts the migration of bcache from its original heap
implementation to the generic min_heap library.  While the original change
aimed to simplify the code and improve maintainability, it introduced a
severe performance regression in real-world scenarios.

As reported by Robert, systems using bcache now suffer from periodic
latency spikes, with P100 (max) latency increasing from 600 ms to 2.4
seconds every 5 minutes.  This degrades bcache's value as a low-latency
caching layer, and leads to frequent timeouts and application stalls in
production environments.

The primary cause of this regression is the behavior of the generic
min_heap implementation's bottom-up sift_down, which performs up to 2 *
log2(n) comparisons when many elements are equal.  The original top-down
variant used by bcache only required O(1) comparisons in such cases.  The
issue was further exacerbated by commit 92a8b224b8 ("lib/min_heap:
introduce non-inline versions of min heap API functions"), which
introduced non-inlined versions of the min_heap API, adding function call
overhead to a performance-critical hot path.

Although removing the custom swap function simplified the code, this
change is part of a broader migration to the generic min_heap API that
introduced significant performance regressions in bcache.

As reported by Robert, bcache now suffers from latency spikes, with P100
(max) latency increasing from 600 ms to 2.4 seconds every 5 minutes. 
These regressions degrade bcache's effectiveness as a low-latency cache
layer and lead to frequent timeouts and application stalls in production
environments.

This revert is part of a series of changes to restore previous performance
by undoing the min_heap transition.

208c1559c5 bcache: reserve more RESERVE_BTREE buckets to prevent allocator hang
Reported an IO hang and unrecoverable error in our testing environment.

After careful research, we found that bch_allocator_thread is stuck,
the call stack is as follows:

Moreover, the RESERVE_BTREE type bucket slot are empty and journal_full
occurs at the same time.

When the cache disk is first used, the sb.nJournal_buckets defaults to 0.
So, only 8 RESERVE_BTREE type buckets are reserved. If RESERVE_BTREE type
buckets used up or btree_check_reserve() failed when request handle btree
split, the request will be repeatedly retried and wait for alloc thread to
fill in.

After the alloc thread fills the buckets, it will call bch_prio_write().
If journal_full occurs simultaneously at this time, journal_reclaim() and
btree_flush_write() will be called sequentially, journal_write cannot be
completed.

This is a low probability event, we believe that reserve more RESERVE_BTREE
buckets can avoid the worst situation.

be913e7c40 gcc-15: get rid of misc extra NUL character padding
This removes two cases of explicit NUL padding that now causes warnings
because of '-Wunterminated-string-initialization' being part of -Wextra
in gcc-15.

Gcc is being silly in this case when it says that it truncates a NUL
terminator, because in these cases there were _multiple_ NUL characters.

But we can get rid of the warning by just simplifying the two
initializers that trigger the warning for me, so this does exactly that.

I'm not sure why the power supply code did that odd

    .attr_name = #_name "\0",

pattern: it was introduced in commit 2cabeaf151 ("power: supply: core:
Cleanup power supply sysfs attribute list"), but that 'attr_name[]'
field is an explicitly sized character array in a statically initialized
variable, and a string initializer always has a terminating NUL _and_
statically initialized character arrays are zero-padded anyway, so it
really seems to be rather extraneous belt-and-suspenders.

The zero_uuid[16] initialization in drivers/md/bcache/super.c makes
perfect sense, but it isn't necessary for the same reasons, and not
worth the new gcc warning noise.

92a8b224b8 lib/min_heap: introduce non-inline versions of min heap API functions
Patch series "Enhance min heap API with non-inline functions and
optimizations", v2.

Add non-inline versions of the min heap API functions in lib/min_heap.c
and updates all users outside of kernel/events/core.c to use these
non-inline versions.  To mitigate the performance impact of indirect
function calls caused by the non-inline versions of the swap and compare
functions, a builtin swap has been introduced that swaps elements based on
their size.  Additionally, it micro-optimizes the efficiency of the min
heap by pre-scaling the counter, following the same approach as in
lib/sort.c.  Documentation for the min heap API has also been added to the
core-api section.


This patch (of 10):

All current min heap API functions are marked with '__always_inline'. 
However, as the number of users increases, inlining these functions
everywhere leads to a increase in kernel size.

In performance-critical paths, such as when perf events are enabled and
min heap functions are called on every context switch, it is important to
retain the inline versions for optimal performance.  To balance this, the
original inline functions are kept, and additional non-inline versions of
the functions have been added in lib/min_heap.c.

866898efbb bcache: remove heap-related macros and switch to generic min_heap
Drop the heap-related macros from bcache and replacing them with the
generic min_heap implementation from include/linux.  By doing so, code
readability is improved by using functions instead of macros.  Moreover,
the min_heap implementation in include/linux adopts a bottom-up variation
compared to the textbook version currently used in bcache.  This bottom-up
variation allows for approximately 50% reduction in the number of
comparison operations during heap siftdown, without changing the number of
swaps, thus making it more efficient.

bd4a633b6f block: move the nonrot flag to queue_limits
Move the nonrot flag into the queue_limits feature field so that it can
be set atomically with the queue frozen.

Use the chance to switch to defaulting to non-rotational and require
the driver to opt into rotational, which matches the polarity of the
sysfs interface.

For the z2ram, ps3vram, 2x memstick, ubiblock and dcssblk the new
rotational flag is not set as they clearly are not rotational despite
this being a behavior change.  There are some other drivers that
unconditionally set the rotational flag to keep the existing behavior
as they arguably can be used on rotational devices even if that is
probably not their main use today (e.g. virtio_blk and drbd).

The flag is automatically inherited in blk_stack_limits matching the
existing behavior in dm and md.

1122c0c1cc block: move cache control settings out of queue->flags
Move the cache control settings into the queue_limits so that the flags
can be set atomically with the device queue frozen.

Add new features and flags field for the driver set flags, and internal
(usually sysfs-controlled) flags in the block layer.  Note that we'll
eventually remove enough field from queue_limits to bring it back to the
previous size.

The disable flag is inverted compared to the previous meaning, which
means it now survives a rescan, similar to the max_sectors and
max_discard_sectors user limits.

The FLUSH and FUA flags are now inherited by blk_stack_limits, which
simplified the code in dm a lot, but also causes a slight behavior
change in that dm-switch and dm-unstripe now advertise a write cache
despite setting num_flush_bios to 0.  The I/O path will handle this
gracefully, but as far as I can tell the lack of num_flush_bios
and thus flush support is a pre-existing data integrity bug in those
targets that really needs fixing, after which a non-zero num_flush_bios
should be required in dm for targets that map to underlying devices.

05356938a4 bcache: call force_wake_up_gc() if necessary in check_should_bypass()
If there are extreme heavy write I/O continuously hit on relative small
cache device (512GB in my testing), it is possible to make counter
c->gc_stats.in_use continue to increase and exceed CUTOFF_CACHE_ADD.

If 'c->gc_stats.in_use > CUTOFF_CACHE_ADD' happens, all following write
requests will bypass the cache device because check_should_bypass()
returns 'true'. Because all writes bypass the cache device, counter
c->sectors_to_gc has no chance to be negative value, and garbage
collection thread won't be waken up even the whole cache becomes clean
after writeback accomplished. The aftermath is that all write I/Os go
directly into backing device even the cache device is clean.

To avoid the above situation, this patch uses a quite conservative way
to fix: if 'c->gc_stats.in_use > CUTOFF_CACHE_ADD' happens, only wakes
up garbage collection thread when the whole cache device is clean.

Before the fix, the writes-always-bypass situation happens after 10+
hours write I/O pressure on 512GB Intel optane memory which acts as
cache device. After this fix, such situation doesn't happen after 36+
hours testing.

a14a68b769 bcache: allow allocator to invalidate bucket in gc
Currently, if the gc is running, when the allocator found free_inc
is empty, allocator has to wait the gc finish. Before that, the
IO is blocked.

But actually, there would be some buckets is reclaimable before gc,
and gc will never mark this kind of bucket to be unreclaimable.

So we can put these buckets into free_inc in gc running to avoid
IO being blocked.

3a861560cc bcache: fix variable length array abuse in btree_iter
btree_iter is used in two ways: either allocated on the stack with a
fixed size MAX_BSETS, or from a mempool with a dynamic size based on the
specific cache set. Previously, the struct had a fixed-length array of
size MAX_BSETS which was indexed out-of-bounds for the dynamically-sized
iterators, which causes UBSAN to complain.

This patch uses the same approach as in bcachefs's sort_iter and splits
the iterator into a btree_iter with a flexible array member and a
btree_iter_stack which embeds a btree_iter as well as a fixed-length
data array.

We are not using __bread() anymore and read_cache_page_gfp() doesn't
care about block size.  Moreover, we should *not* change block
size on a device that is currently held exclusive - filesystems

34a2cf3fbe bcache: move calculation of stripe_size and io_opt into bcache_device_init
bcache currently calculates the stripe size for the non-cached_dev
case directly in bcache_device_init, but for the cached_dev case it does
it in the caller.  Consolidate it in one places, which also enables
setting the io_opt queue_limit before allocating the gendisk so that it
can be passed in instead of changing the limit just after the allocation.

74fa8f9c55 block: pass a queue_limits argument to blk_alloc_disk
Pass a queue_limits to blk_alloc_disk and apply it if non-NULL.  This
will allow allocating queues with valid queue limits instead of setting
the values one at a time later.

Also change blk_alloc_disk to return an ERR_PTR instead of just NULL
which can't distinguish errors.

5e7169e7f7 bcache: discard_granularity should not be smaller than a sector
Just like all block I/O, discards are in units of sectors.  Thus setting a
smaller than sector size discard limit in case of > 512 byte sectors in
bcache doesn't make sense.  Always set the discard granularity to 512
bytes instead.

d4e3b928ab closures: CLOSURE_CALLBACK() to fix type punning
Control flow integrity is now checking that type signatures match on
indirect function calls. That breaks closures, which embed a work_struct
in a closure in such a way that a closure_fn may also be used as a
workqueue fn by the underlying closure code.

So we have to change closure fns to take a work_struct as their
argument - but that results in a loss of clarity, as closure fns have
different semantics from normal workqueue functions (they run owning a
ref on the closure, which must be released with continue_at() or
closure_return()).

Thus, this patc introduces CLOSURE_CALLBACK() and closure_type() macros
as suggested by Kees, to smooth things over a bit.
