When unplugging a hotpluggable DRM device we first unregister it
with drm_dev_unregister and then set drm_device.unplugged flag which
is used to mark device critical sections with drm_dev_enter()/
drm_dev_exit() preventing access to device resources that are not
available after the device is gone.
But drm_dev_unregister may lead to hotplug uevent(s) fired to
user-space on card and/or connector removal, thus making it possible
for user-space to try accessing a disconnected device.
Fix this by first making sure device is properly marked as
disconnected and only then unregister it.

Reference counting functions in the kernel typically use get/put suffixes. For
maintaining coding style consistency, introduce drm_dev_{get/put} functions. All
callers of drm_dev_ref() API have been converted in this patch and hence it has
been dropped while the drm_dev_unref() API with non-trivial number of users
remains for compatibility.
The semantic patch scripts/coccinelle/api/drm-get-put.cocci has been updated
with the new helper for conversion of drm_dev_unref() to drm_dev_put()

The only thing modern drivers are supposed to do in lastclose is
restore the fb emulation state. Which is entirely optional, and
there's really no reason to do that. So restrict it to legacy drivers
(where the driver cleanup essentially happens in lastclose).
This will also allow us to share the unregister function with
drm_dev_unplug().

So I think there's 3 cases:
- Trying to unload the module. You can't do that while anyone has the
fd still open, so lastclose is guaranteeed to run.
- Forcefully unbinding the driver through sysfs. Not any better, since
the can_switch stuff checks for the open count, and so will delay the
delayed switch no matter what.
- Actual hotremoval: a) not implemented since none of the drivers
taking part in vgaswitcheroo correctly unplug the drm device and b)
you can't hotremove a chip from a laptop.

If the DRM core fails to init for whatever reason, ensure that
no driver ever calls drm_dev_register().
This is best done at drm_dev_init() as it covers drivers that call
drm_dev_alloc() as well as drivers that prefer to embed struct
drm_device into their own device struct and call drm_dev_init()
themselves.
In my case I had so many dynamic device majors used that the major
number for DRM (226) was stolen, causing DRM core init to fail after
failing to register a chrdev, and ultimately calling debugfs_remove()
on drm_debugfs_root in drm_core_exit().
After drm core failed to init, VGEM was still calling drm_dev_register(),
ultimately leading to drm_debugfs_init(), with drm_debugfs_root passed
as the root for the new debugfs dir at debugfs_create_dir().
This led to a kernel panic once we were either derefencing root->d_inode
while it was NULL or calling root->d_inode->i_op->lookup() while it was
NULL in debugfs at inode_lock() or lookup_*().

This is caused by the revert moving back to drm_unplug_dev calling
drm_minor_unregister which does:
device_del(minor->kdev);
dev_set_drvdata(minor->kdev, NULL); /* safety belt */
drm_debugfs_cleanup(minor);
Causing the sysfs entries to already be removed even though we still
have references to them in e.g. drm_connector.
Note we must call drm_minor_unregister to notify userspace of the unplug
of the device, so calling drm_dev_unregister is not completely wrong the
problem is that drm_dev_unregister does too much.
This commit fixes drm_unplug_dev by not only reverting
commit a39be606f9 ("drm: Do a full device unregister when unplugging")
but by also adding a call to drm_modeset_unregister_all before the
drm_minor_unregister calls to make sure all sysfs entries are removed
before calling device_del(minor->kdev) thereby also fixing the second
set of oopses caused by just reverting the commit.

Merge tag 'v4.10-rc8' into drm-next
Linux 4.10-rc8
Backmerge Linus rc8 to fix some conflicts, but also
to avoid pulling it in via a fixes pull from someone.
Some state is coupled into the device lifetime outside of the
load/unload timeframe and requires teardown during final unreference
from drm_dev_release(). For example, dmabufs hold both a device and
module reference and may live longer than expected (i.e. the current
pattern of the driver tearing down its state and then releasing a
reference to the drm device) and yet touch driver private state when
destroyed.
v2: Export drm_dev_fini() and move the responsibility for finalizing the
drm_device and freeing it to the release callback. (If no callback is
provided, the core will call drm_dev_fini() and kfree(dev) as before.)
v3: Remember to add drm_dev_fini() to drm_drv.h
v4: Tidy language for kerneldoc
v5: Cross reference from drm_dev_init() to note that driver->release()
allows for arbitrary embedding.
v6: Refer to driver data rather than driver state, as state is now
becoming associated with the struct drm_atomic_state and friends.

I was under the misconception that the sysfs dev stuff can be fully
set up, and then registered all in one step with device_add. That's
true for properties and property groups, but not for parents and child
devices. Those must be fully registered before you can register a
child.
Add a bit of tracking to make sure that asynchronous mst connector
hotplugging gets this right. For consistency we rely upon the implicit
barriers of the connector->mutex, which is taken anyway, to ensure
that at least either the connector or device registration call will
work out.
Mildly tested since I can't reliably reproduce this on my mst box

Several DRM drivers print the same initialization message right after
drm_dev_register, so move that to common code. The exception is i915,

Calling drm_vblank_cleanup() in drm_dev_unregister() causes issues with
drivers that have moved away from the .load() and .unload() midlayer.
Those drivers call drm_dev_unregister() as the first operation at unbind
time, before shutting down the device. This results in warnings due to
drm_vblank_cleanup() being called with vblank interrupts still active,
and then to vblank events being sent after cleanup.
Fix the problem by moving vblank cleanup from drm_dev_unregister() to
drm_dev_release() that is guaranteed to be called after drivers shut
down the device.

We thought that no userspace is using them, but oops libdrm is using
them to figure out whether a driver supports modesetting. Check out
drmCheckModesettingSupported but maybe don't because it's horrible and
totally runs counter to where we want to go with libdrm device
handling. The function looks in the device hierarchy for whether
controlD* exist using the following format string:
/sys/bus/pci/devices/%04x:%02x:%02x.%d/drm/controlD%d
The "/drm" subdirectory is the glue directory from the sysfs class
stuff, and the only way to get at it seems to through
kdev->kobj.parent (when kdev is represents e.g. the card0 chardev
instance in sysfs). Git grep says we're not the only ones touching
that, so I hope it's ok we dig into such internals - I couldn't find a
proper interface for getting at the glue directory.
Quick git grep shows that at least -amdgpu, -ati are using this.
-modesetting do not, and on -intel it's only about the 4th fallback
path for device lookup, which is why this didn't blow up earlier.
Oh well, we need to keep it working, and the simplest way is to add a
symlink at the right place in sysfs from controlD* to card*.
v2:
- Fix error path handling by adding if (!minor) return checks (David)
- Fix the controlD* numbers to match what's been there (David)
- Add a comment what exactly userspace minimally needs.
- Correct the analysis for -intel (Chris).

Looking at the ioctl permission checks I noticed that it's impossible

also don't work, so no joy with dma-bufs.
The only way to do anything with a control node is by drawing stuff
into a dumb buffer and displaying that. I suspect control nodes are an
entirely unused thing, and a cursory check shows that there does not
seem to be any callers of drmOpenControl nor of the other drmOpen
functions using DRM_MODE_CONTROL.
Since I don't like dead uabi, let's remove it. But since this would be
a really big change I think it's better to start out small by simply
not registering anything. We can garbage-collect the dead code later

Various cleanups to the DRM core initialization and exit handlers:
- Register chrdev last: Once register_chrdev() returns, open() will
succeed on the given chrdevs. This is usually not an issue, as no
chardevs are registered, yet. However, nodes can be created by
user-space via mknod(2), even though such major/minor combinations are
unknown to the kernel. Avoid calling into drm_stub_open() in those
cases.
Again, drm_stub_open() would just bail out as the inode is unknown,
but it's really non-obvious if you hack on drm_stub_open().
- Unify error-paths into just one label. All the error-path helpers can
be called even though the constructors were not called yet, or failed.
Hence, just call all cleanups unconditionally.
- Call into drm_global_release(). This is a no-op, but provides
debugging helpers in case there're GLOBALS left on module unload. This
function was unused until now.
- Use DRM_ERROR() instead of printk(), and also print the error-code on
failure (even if it is static!).
- Don't throw away error-codes of register_chrdev()!
- Don't hardcode -1 as errno. This is just plain wrong.
- Order exit-handlers in the exact reverse order of initialization
(except if the order actually matters for syncing-reasons, which is
not the case here, though).
v2:

The drm_core.h header contains a set of constants meant to be used
throughout DRM. However, as it turns out, they're each used just once and
don't bring any benefit. They're also grossly mis-named and lack
name-spacing. This patch inlines them, or moves them into drm_internal.h
as appropriate:
- CORE_AUTHOR and CORE_DESC are inlined into corresponding MODULE_*()
macros. It's just confusing having to follow 2 pointers when trying to
find the definition of these fields. Grep'ping for MODULE_AUTHOR()
should reveal the full information, if there's no strong reason not to.
- CORE_NAME, CORE_DATE, CORE_MAJOR, CORE_MINOR, and CORE_PATCHLEVEL are
inlined into the sysfs 'version' attribute. They're stripped
everywhere else (which is just some printk() statements). CORE_NAME
just doesn't make *any* sense, as we hard-code it in many places,
anyway. The other constants are outdated and just serve
binary-compatibility purposes. Hence, inline them in 'version' sysfs
attribute (we might even try dropping it..).
- DRM_IF_MAJOR and DRM_IF_MINOR are moved into drm_internal.h as they're
only used by the global ioctl handlers. Furthermore, versioning
interfaces breaks backports and as such is deprecated, anyway. We just
keep them for historic reasons. I doubt anyone will ever modify them
again.

The PM core introduced the ability to keep devices runtime suspended
during the entire system suspend/resume process with commit aae4518b31
("PM / sleep: Mechanism to avoid resuming runtime-suspended devices
unnecessarily"). Before this so-called "direct-complete" procedure was
introduced, devices were always runtime resumed only to be immediately
put to sleep again using their ->suspend hook. Direct-complete is
enabled by returning a positive value from the ->prepare hook. The PCI
core usually does this automatically.
Direct-complete is only available for a device if all children use it as
well. Currently we cannot support direct-complete for DRM drivers
because the DRM core automatically registers multiple DRM minors which
belong to device class drm_class, and drm_class uses a struct dev_pm_ops
which lacks the ->prepare callback.
While this could be solved by adding the missing ->prepare callback,
closer inspection shows that there are no DRM drivers left which declare
the legacy ->suspend and ->resume callbacks in their drm_driver struct.
The last ones to remove them were i915 with commit 1751fcf9f9
("drm/i915: Fix module initialisation, v2.") and exynos with commit
e7fefb1d5a ("drm/exynos: remove legacy ->suspend()/resume()").
Consequently the struct dev_pm_ops of drm_class is now dead code. Remove
it. If no dev_pm_ops is declared for a device, the PM core automatically
enables direct-complete for it, thereby making that mechanism available
to the parent DRM PCI devices.

ddev = drm_dev_alloc(&driver, parent_dev);
drm_dev_set_unique(ddev, dev_name(parent_dev));
(Sometimes dev_name(ddev->dev) is used, which is the same.)
As suggested in

drm_dev_set_unique() uses a format string to define the unique name of a
device. This feature is not used as currently all the calls to this
function either use "%s" as a format string or directly use
dev_name().
Even though this second kind of call does not introduce security
problems, because there cannot be "%" characters in dev_name() results,
gcc issues a warning when building with -Wformat-security flag
("warning: format string is not a string literal (potentially
insecure)"). This warning is useful to find real bugs like the one
fixed by commit 3958b79266 ("configfs: fix kernel infoleak through
user-controlled format string"). False positives which do not bring
an extra value make the work of finding real bugs harder.

So update the .tmpl (and pull a bunch of the overview docs into the

Right now, drm_sysfs_create() returns the newly allocated "struct class"
to the caller (which is drm_core_init()), which then has to set the
global variable 'drm_class'. During cleanup, though, we call
drm_sysfs_destroy() which implicitly uses the global 'drm_class'. This is
confusing, as ownership of the global 'drm_class' is non-obvious.
This patch changes drm_sysfs_create() to drm_sysfs_init() and makes it
initialize the 'drm_class' object directly, rather than returning it.
This way, both drm_sysfs_init() and drm_sysfs_destroy() work in a similar

switch over to atomic properties. To do this, make sure that any

populated if they have custom properties (you did already remember to
plug in atomic-helper func for the legacy ->set_property() vfuncs,

A new cap is introduced, DRM_CLIENT_CAP_ATOMIC, for the purposes of

Most of the new DRM management functions are nowadays in drm_stub.c. By
moving the core module initialization to drm_stub.c we can make several
global variables static and keep the stub-open helper local.
The core files now look like this:
drm_stub.c: Core management
drm_drv.c: Ioctl dispatcher
drm_ioctl.c: Actual ioctl backends
drm_fops.c: Char-dev file-operations
A follow-up patch will move what is left from drm_drv.c into drm_ioctl.c.

The drm_file->is_master field is redundant as it's equivalent to:
drm_file->master && drm_file->master == drm_file->minor->master
1) "=>"
Whenever we set drm_file->is_master, we also set:
drm_file->minor->master = drm_file->master;
Whenever we clear drm_file->is_master, we also call:
drm_master_put(&drm_file->minor->master);
which implicitly clears it to NULL.
2) "<="
minor->master cannot be set if it is non-NULL. Therefore, it stays as
is unless a file drops it.
If minor->master is NULL, it is only set by places that also adjust
drm_file->is_master.
Therefore, we can safely drop is_master and replace it by an inline helper
that matches:

Render nodes provide an API for userspace to use non-privileged GPU
commands without any running DRM-Master. It is useful for offscreen
rendering, GPGPU clients, and normal render clients which do not perform
modesetting.
Compared to legacy clients, render clients no longer need any
authentication to perform client ioctls. Instead, user-space controls
render/client access to GPUs via filesystem access-modes on the
render-node. Once a render-node was opened, a client has full access to
the client/render operations on the GPU. However, no modesetting or ioctls
that affect global state are allowed on render nodes.
To prevent privilege-escalation, drivers must explicitly state that they
support render nodes. They must mark their render-only ioctls as
DRM_RENDER_ALLOW so render clients can use them. Furthermore, they must
support clients without any attached master.
If filesystem access-modes are not enough for fine-grained access control
to render nodes (very unlikely, considering the versaitlity of FS-ACLs),
you may still fall-back to fd-passing from server to client (which allows
arbitrary access-control). However, note that revoking access is
currently impossible and unlikely to get implemented.
Note: Render clients no longer have any associated DRM-Master as they are
supposed to be independent of any server state. DRM core highly depends on
file_priv->master to be non-NULL for modesetting/ctx/etc. commands.
Therefore, drivers must be very careful to not require DRM-Master if they
support DRIVER_RENDER.
So far render-nodes are protected by "drm_rnodes". As long as this
module-parameter is not set to 1, a driver will not create render nodes.
This allows us to experiment with the API a bit before we stabilize it.

Userspace is free to pass in any command bits it feels like through the
ioctl cmd, and for example trinity likes to fuzz those bits to create
conflicting commands. So instead of relying upon userspace to pass along
the correct IN/OUT flags for the ioctl, use the flags as expected by the
kernel.
This does have a side-effect that NULL pointers can not be substituted
by userspace in place of a struct. This feature was not being used by
any driver, but instead exposed all of the command handlers to a user

Previously read-only KMS ioctls had some somewhat inconsistent settings
regarding whether mastership was required. For example, GETRESOURCES
did not require master, but GETPLANERESOURCES, GETPROPERTY, etc. did.
At least for debugging, it is nice to be able to use modetest to dump
property values while another process is master, and there seems to
be no harm in allowing read-only access to the KMS state to other
processes.

DRM users should be able to create/destroy/manage dumb- and frame-buffers
without DRM_MASTER. These ioctls do not affect modesetting so there is no
reason to protect them by drm-master. Particularly, destroying buffers
should always be possible as a client has only access to buffers that they
created. Hence, there is no reason to prevent a client from destroying the
buffers, considering a simple close() would destroy them, anyway.
Furthermore, a display-server currently cannot shutdown correctly if it
does not have DRM_MASTER. If some other display-server becomes active (or
the kernel console), then the background display-server is unable to
destroy its buffers.
Under special curcumstances (like monitor reconfiguration) this might even
happen during runtime.

This adds the basic drm dma-buf interface layer, called PRIME. This
commit doesn't add any driver support, it is simply and agreed upon starting
point so we can work towards merging driver support for the next merge window.
Current drivers with work done are nouveau, i915, udl, exynos and omap.
The main APIs exposed to userspace allow translating a 32-bit object handle
to a file descriptor, and a file descriptor to a 32-bit object handle.
The flags value is currently limited to O_CLOEXEC.

Two parts to this, one is simple unplug from sysfs for the device node.
The second adds an unplugged state, if we have device opens, we
just set the unplugged state and return, if we have no device
opens we drop the drm device.
If after a lastclose we discover we are unplugged we then
drop the drm device.
v2: use an atomic for unplugged and wrap it for users,
add checks on open + mmap + ioctl entry points.

Its useful to be able to call the mode setting getter ioctls.
Not requiring master fd, enables writing a simple program which
can query the state of the video system.
Since these ioctls are only "getters" there is no security or
synchronization issues which would require master fd. Opening
an new fd is already protected by the file permissions on the
device file.

drm_getclient, drm_getstats and drm_getmap (with a few minor
adjustments) do not need global mutex, so fix that and
make the said ioctls DRM_UNLOCKED. Details:
drm_getclient: the only thing that should be protected here
is dev->filelist and that is already protected everywhere with
dev->struct_mutex.
drm_getstats: there is no need for any mutex here because the
loop runs through quasi-static (set at load time only)
data, and the actual count access is done with atomic_read()
drm_getmap already uses dev->struct_mutex to protect
dev->maplist, which also used to protect the same structure
everywhere else except at three places:
* drm_getsarea, which doesn't grab *any* mutex before
touching dev->maplist (so no drm_global_mutex doesn't help
here either; different issue for a different patch).
However, drivers seem to call it only at
initialization time so it probably doesn't matter
* drm_master_destroy, which is called from drm_master_put,
which in turn is protected with dev->struct_mutex
everywhere else in drm module, so we are good here too.
* drm_getsareactx, which releases the dev->struct_mutex
too early, but this patch includes the fix for that.
v2: * incorporate comments received from Daniel Vetter
* include the (long) explanation above to make it clear what
we are doing (and why), also at Daniel Vetter's request
* tighten up mutex grab/release locations to only
encompass real critical sections, rather than some
random code around them

To properly support the various plane formats supported by different
hardware, the kernel must know the pixel format of a framebuffer object.
So add a new ioctl taking a format argument corresponding to a fourcc
name from the new drm_fourcc.h header file. Implement the fb creation
hooks in terms of the new mode_fb_cmd2 using helpers where the old
bpp/depth values are needed.

drm_wait_vblank must be DRM_UNLOCKED because otherwise it
will grab the drm_global_mutex and then go to sleep until the vblank
event it is waiting for. That can wreck havoc in the windowing system
because if one process issues this ioctl, it will block all other
processes for the duration of all vblanks between the current and the
one it is waiting for. In some cases it can block the entire windowing
system.
v2: incorporate comments received from Daniel Vetter and
Michel Daenzer.
v3/v4: after a lengty discussion with Daniel Vetter, it was concluded
that the only thing not yet protected with locks and atomic
ops is the write to dev->last_vblank_wait. It's only used in a
debug file in proc, and the current code already employs no
correct locking: the proc file only takes dev->struct_mutex,
whereas drm_wait_vblank implicitly took the drm_global_mutex.
Given all this, it's not worth bothering to try to fix
the locks at this time.

exist.
