If the :enter_dead() idle state callback fails for a certain state,
there may be still a shallower state for which it will work.
Because the only caller of cpuidle_play_dead(), native_play_dead(),
falls back to hlt_play_dead() if it returns an error, it should
better try all of the idle states for which :enter_dead() is present
before failing, so change it accordingly.
Also notice that the :enter_dead() state callback is not expected
to return on success (the CPU should be "dead" then), so make
cpuidle_play_dead() ignore its return value.

Drop the include of dma-mapping.h in machdep.h, replace it with forward

The consumer devices that inside the cpu/cluster power domain may register
the genpd notifier where their power domains point to the pd nodes under
'/cpus/power-domains'. If the cpuidle.off==1, the genpd notifier will fail
due to sbi_cpuidle_pd_allow_domain_state is not set. We also need the
sbi_cpuidle_cpuhp_up/down to invoke the callbacks. Therefore adding a
cpuidle_disabled() check before cpuidle_register() to address the issue.

Remove CPU iowaiters influence on idle state selection.
Remove the menu notion of performance multiplier which increased with
the number of tasks that went to iowait sleep on this CPU and haven't
woken up yet.
Relying on iowait for cpuidle is problematic for a few reasons:
1. There is no guarantee that an iowaiting task will wake up on the
same CPU.
2. The task being in iowait says nothing about the idle duration, we
could be selecting shallower states for a long time.
3. The task being in iowait doesn't always imply a performance hit
with increased latency.
4. If there is such a performance hit, the number of iowaiting tasks
doesn't directly correlate.
5. The definition of iowait altogether is vague at best, it is
sprinkled across kernel code.

To enable the domain-idle-states to be used during s2idle on a PREEMPT_RT
based configuration, let's allow the re-assignment of the ->enter_s2idle()
callback to psci_enter_s2idle_domain_idle_state().
Similar to s2ram, let's leave the support for CPU hotplug outside
PREEMPT_RT, as it's depending on using runtime PM. For s2idle, this means
that an offline CPU's PM domain will remain powered-on. In practise this
may lead to that a shallower idle-state than necessary gets selected, which
shouldn't be an issue (besides wasting power).

The hierarchical PM domain topology are currently disabled on a PREEMPT_RT
based configuration. As a first step to enable it to be used, let's try to
attach the CPU devices to their PM domains on PREEMPT_RT. In this way the
syscore ops becomes available, allowing the PM domain topology to be
managed during s2ram.
For the moment let's leave the support for CPU hotplug outside PREEMPT_RT,
as it's depending on using runtime PM. For s2ram, this isn't a problem as
all CPUs are managed via the syscore ops.

When using the hierarchical topology and PSCI OSI-mode we may end up
overriding the deepest idle-state's ->enter|enter_s2idle() callbacks, but
there is no point to also re-assign the CPUIDLE_FLAG_RCU_IDLE for the
idle-state in question, as that has already been set when parsing the
states from DT. See init_state_node().

The domain-idle-states are currently disabled on a PREEMPT_RT based
configuration for the cpuidle-psci-domain. To enable them to be used for
system-wide suspend and in particular during s2idle, let's set the
GENPD_FLAG_RPM_ALWAYS_ON instead of GENPD_FLAG_ALWAYS_ON for the
corresponding genpd provider.
In this way, the runtime PM path remains disabled in genpd for its attached
devices, while powering-on/off the PM domain during system-wide suspend
becomes allowed.

When bailing out early, teo will not query the sleep length anymore
since commit 6da8f9ba5a ("cpuidle: teo:
Skip tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() call in some cases") with an
expected sleep_length_ns value of KTIME_MAX.
This lead to state0 accumulating lots of 'intercepts' because
the actually measured sleep length was < KTIME_MAX, so query the sleep
length instead for teo to recognize if it still is in an
intercept-likely scenario without alternating between the two modes.
Fundamentally we can only do one of the two:
1. Skip sleep_length_ns query when we think intercept is likely.
2. Have accurate data if sleep_length_ns is actually intercepted when
we believe it is currently intercepted.
Previously teo did the former while this patch chooses the latter as
the additional time it takes to query the sleep length was found to be
negligible and the variants of option 1 (count all unknowns as misses
or count all unknown as hits) had significant regressions (as misses
had lots of too shallow idle state selections and as hits had terrible
performance in intercept-heavy workloads).

The logic for recent intercepts didn't work, there is an underflow
of the 'recent' value that can be observed during boot already, which
teo usually doesn't recover from, making the entire logic pointless.
Furthermore the recent intercepts also were never reset, thus not
actually being very 'recent'.
Having underflowed 'recent' values lead to teo always acting as if
we were in a scenario were expected sleep length based on timers is
too high and it therefore unnecessarily selecting shallower states.
Experiments show that the remaining 'intercept' logic is enough to
quickly react to scenarios in which teo cannot rely on the timer
expected sleep length.

Util-awareness was reported to be too aggressive in selecting shallower
states. Additionally a single threshold was found to not be suitable
for reasoning about sleep length as, for all practical purposes,
almost arbitrary sleep lengths are still possible for any load value.

In general it's preferable to avoid placing cpumasks on the stack, as
for large values of NR_CPUS these can consume significant amounts of
stack space and make stack overflows more likely.
Use cpumask_first_and_and() and cpumask_weight_and() to avoid the need
for a temporary cpumask on the stack.

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored
and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a
quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this
quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns
void.
Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove
callback to the void returning variant.

Clients like regulators, interconnects and clocks depend on rpmh-rsc to
vote on resources and rpmh-rsc depends on psci power-domains to complete
probe. All of them are in core_initcall().
Change psci domain init level to core_initcall() to avoid probe defer from
all of the above.

To support ACPI Low Power Idle (LPI), few functions are required which

In C language, when you perform a multiplication operation, if
both operands are of int type, the multiplication operation is
performed on the int type, and then the result is converted to
the target type. This means that if the product of int type
multiplication exceeds the range that int type can represent,
an overflow will occur even if you store the result in a
variable of int64_t type.
For a multiplication of two int values, it is better to use
mul_u32_u32() rather than s->exit_latency_ns = s->exit_latency *
NSEC_PER_USEC to avoid potential overflow happenning.

lppaca_shared_proc() takes a pointer to the lppaca which is typically
accessed through get_lppaca(). With DEBUG_PREEMPT enabled, this leads

This isn't actually a problem however, as it does not matter which
lppaca is accessed, the shared proc state will be the same.
vcpudispatch_stats_procfs_init() already works around this by disabling
preemption, but the lparcfg code does not, erroring any time
/proc/powerpc/lparcfg is accessed with DEBUG_PREEMPT enabled.
Instead of disabling preemption on the caller side, rework
lppaca_shared_proc() to not take a pointer and instead directly access
the lppaca, bypassing any potential preemption checks.

Notice that it is not necessary to assign tick_intercept_sum in every
iteration of the first loop over idle states in teo_select(), because
the intercept_sum value does not change after the assignment in a
given iteration of the loop, so its value after the last iteration of
the loop can be used for computing the tick_intercept_sum value
directly.
Modify the code accordingly.

Because the cost of calling tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() may increase
in the future, reorder the code in menu_select() so it first uses the
statistics to determine the expected idle duration. If that value is
higher than RESIDENCY_THRESHOLD_NS, tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() will
be called to obtain the time till the closest timer and refine the
idle duration prediction if necessary.
This causes the governor to always take the full overhead of
get_typical_interval() with the assumption that the cost will be
amortized by skipping the tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() call in the
cases when the predicted idle duration is relatively very small.

Currently, if the target residency of the deepest idle state is less than
the tick period length, which is quite likely for HZ=100, and the deepest
idle state is about to be selected by the TEO idle governor, the decision
on whether or not to stop the scheduler tick is based entirely on the
time till the closest timer. This is often insufficient, because timers
may not be in heavy use and there may be a plenty of other CPU wakeup
events between the deepest idle state's target residency and the closest
tick.
Allow the governor to count those events by making the deepest idle
state's bin effectively end at TICK_NSEC and introducing an additional
"bin" for collecting "hit" events (ie. the ones in which the measured
idle duration falls into the same bin as the time till the closest
timer) with idle duration values past TICK_NSEC.
This way the "intercepts" metric for the deepest idle state's bin
becomes nonzero in general, and so it can influence the decision on
whether or not to stop the tick possibly increasing the governor's
accuracy in that respect.

Make teo_select() avoid calling tick_nohz_get_sleep_length() if the
candidate idle state to return is state 0 or if state 0 is a polling
one and the target residency of the current candidate one is below
a certain threshold, in which cases it may be assumed that the CPU will
be woken up immediately by a non-timer wakeup source and the timers
are not likely to matter.

A switch from OSI to PC mode is only possible if all CPUs other than the
calling one are OFF, either through a call to CPU_OFF or not yet booted.
Currently OSI mode is enabled before power domains are created. In cases
where CPUidle states are not using hierarchical CPU topology the bail out
path tries to switch back to PC mode which gets denied by firmware since
other CPUs are online at this point and creates inconsistent state as
firmware is in OSI mode and Linux in PC mode.
This change moves enabling OSI mode after power domains are created,
this would makes sure that hierarchical CPU topology is used before
switching firmware to OSI mode.

The TEO governor takes CPU utilization into account by refining idle state
selection when the utilization is above a certain threshold. This is done by
choosing an idle state shallower than the previously selected one.
However, when doing this, the idle duration estimate needs to be
adjusted so as to prevent the scheduler tick from being stopped when the
candidate idle state is shallow, which may lead to excessive energy
usage if the CPU is not woken up quickly enough going forward.
Moreover, if the scheduler tick has been stopped already and the new
idle duration estimate is too small, the replacement candidate state
cannot be used.
Modify the relevant code to take the above observations into account.

Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.4-rc1.
Once again, a busy development cycle, with lots of changes happening in
the driver core in the quest to be able to move "struct bus" and "struct
class" into read-only memory, a task now complete with these changes.
This will make the future rust interactions with the driver core more
"provably correct" as well as providing more obvious lifetime rules for
all busses and classes in the kernel.
The changes required for this did touch many individual classes and
busses as many callbacks were changed to take const * parameters
instead. All of these changes have been submitted to the various
subsystem maintainers, giving them plenty of time to review, and most of
them actually did so.
Other than those changes, included in here are a small set of other
things:
- kobject logging improvements
- cacheinfo improvements and updates
- obligatory fw_devlink updates and fixes
- documentation updates
- device property cleanups and const * changes
- firwmare loader dependency fixes.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
problems.

Code in the idle path is not allowed to be instrumented because RCU is
disabled, see commit 0e985e9d22 ("cpuidle: Add comments about

Mark the cpuidle ->enter() callbacks as __cpuidle and use the

Now that of_cpu_device_node_get() is defined in of.h, of_device.h is just
implicitly including other includes, and is no longer needed. Adjust the
include files with what was implicitly included by of_device.h (cpu.h,
cpuhotplug.h, of.h, and of_platform.h) and drop including of_device.h.

It is preferred to use typed property access functions (i.e.
of_property_read_<type> functions) rather than low-level
of_get_property/of_find_property functions for reading properties. As
part of this, convert of_get_property/of_find_property calls to the
recently added of_property_present() helper when we just want to test
for presence of a property and nothing more.

Direct access to the struct bus_type dev_root pointer is going away soon
so replace that with a call to bus_get_dev_root() instead, which is what
it is there for.
This allows us to clean up the cpuidle_add_interface() call a bit as it
was only called in one place, with the same argument so just put that
into the function itself. Note that cpuidle_remove_interface() should
also probably be removed in the future as there are no callers of it for
some reason.

The runtime Power Management of CPU topology is not compatible with
PREEMPT_RT:
1. Core cpuidle path disables IRQs.
2. Core cpuidle calls cpuidle-psci.
3. cpuidle-psci in __psci_enter_domain_idle_state() calls
pm_runtime_put_sync_suspend() and pm_runtime_get_sync() which use
spinlocks (which are sleeping on PREEMPT_RT).
Deep sleep modes are not a priority of Realtime kernels because the
latencies might become unpredictable. On the other hand the PSCI CPU
idle power domain is a parent of other devices and power domain
controllers, thus it cannot be simply skipped (e.g. on Qualcomm SM8250).
Disable the idle callbacks in cpuidle-psci and mark the domain as
always on. This is a trade-off between making PREEMPT_RT working and
still having a proper power domain hierarchy in the system.

If the cpuidle driver provides the target residency and exit latency in
nanoseconds, the corresponding values in microseconds need to be set to
reflect the provided numbers in order for the sysfs interface to show
them correctly, so make __cpuidle_driver_init() do that.

The instrumentation_begin()/end() annotations in poll_idle() were
complete nonsense. Specifically they caused tracing to happen in the
middle of noinstr code, resulting in RCU splats.
Now that local_clock() is noinstr, mark up the rest and let it rip.

When a KVM guest has MWAIT, mwait_idle() is used as the default idle
function.
However, the cpuidle-haltpoll driver calls default_idle() from
default_enter_idle() directly and that one uses HLT instead of MWAIT,
which may affect performance adversely, because MWAIT is preferred to
HLT as explained by the changelog of commit aebef63cf7 ("x86: Remove
vendor checks from prefer_mwait_c1_over_halt").
Make default_enter_idle() call arch_cpu_idle(), which can use MWAIT,
instead of default_idle() to address this issue.

The whole disable-RCU, enable-IRQS dance is very intricate since
changing IRQ state is traced, which depends on RCU.
Add two helpers for the cpuidle case that mirror the entry code:
ct_cpuidle_enter()
ct_cpuidle_exit()
And fix all the cases where the enter/exit dance was buggy.

Modern interactive systems, such as recent Android phones, tend to have
power efficient shallow idle states. Selecting deeper idle states on a
device while a latency-sensitive workload is running can adversely
impact performance due to increased latency. Additionally, if the CPU
wakes up from a deeper sleep before its target residency as is often the
case, it results in a waste of energy on top of that.
At the moment, none of the available idle governors take any scheduling
information into account. They also tend to overestimate the idle
duration quite often, which causes them to select excessively deep idle
states, thus leading to increased wakeup latency and lower performance
with no power saving. For 'menu' while web browsing on Android for
instance, those types of wakeups ('too deep') account for over 24% of
all wakeups.
At the same time, on some platforms idle state 0 can be power efficient
enough to warrant wanting to prefer it over idle state 1. This is
because the power usage of the two states can be so close that
sufficient amounts of too deep state 1 sleeps can completely offset the
state 1 power saving to the point where it would've been more power
efficient to just use state 0 instead. This is, of course, for systems
where state 0 is not a polling state, such as arm-based devices.
Sleeps that happened in state 0 while they could have used state 1 ('too
shallow') only save less power than they otherwise could have. Too deep
sleeps, on the other hand, harm performance and nullify the potential
power saving from using state 1 in the first place. While taking this
into account, it is clear that on balance it is preferable for an idle
governor to have more too shallow sleeps instead of more too deep sleeps
on those kinds of platforms.
This patch specifically tunes TEO to prefer shallower idle states in
order to reduce wakeup latency and achieve better performance.
To this end, before selecting the next idle state it uses the avg_util
signal of a CPU's runqueue in order to determine to what extent the CPU
is being utilized. This util value is then compared to a threshold
defined as a percentage of the CPU's capacity (capacity >> 6 ie. ~1.5%
in the current implementation). If the util is above the threshold, the
index of the idle state selected by TEO metrics will be reduced by 1,
thus selecting a shallower state. If the util is below the threshold,
the governor defaults to the TEO metrics mechanism to try to select the
deepest available idle state based on the closest timer event and its
own correctness.
The main goal of this is to reduce latency and increase performance for
some workloads. Under some workloads it will result in an increase in
power usage (Geekbench 5) while for other workloads it will also result
in a decrease in power usage compared to TEO (PCMark Web, Jankbench,
Speedometer).
It can provide drastically decreased latency and performance benefits in
certain types of workloads that are sensitive to latency.

Add a no_poll flag to teo_find_shallower_state() that will let the
function optionally not consider polling states.
This allows the caller to guard against the function inadvertently
resulting in TEO putting the CPU in a polling state when that
behaviour is undesirable.

During the comparative study of cpuidle governors, it is noticed that the
menu governor does not select CEDE state in some scenarios even though when
the sleep duration of the CPU exceeds the target residency of the CEDE idle
state this is because the CPU exits the snooze "polling" state when snooze
time limit is reached in the snooze_loop(), which is not a real wake up
and it just means that the polling state selection was not adequate.
cpuidle governors rely on CPUIDLE_FLAG_POLLING flag to be set for the
polling states to handle the condition mentioned above.
Hence, set the CPUIDLE_FLAG_POLLING flag for snooze state (polling state)
in powerpc arch to make the cpuidle governor work as expected.

While we correctly skips to initialize an idle state from a disabled idle
state node in DT, the returned value from dt_init_idle_driver() don't get
adjusted accordingly. Instead the number of found idle state nodes are
returned, while the callers are expecting the number of successfully
initialized idle states from DT.
This leads to cpuidle drivers unnecessarily continues to initialize their
idle state specific data. Moreover, in the case when all idle states have
been disabled in DT, we would end up registering a cpuidle driver, rather
than relying on the default arch specific idle call.

The function psci_pd_try_set_osi_mode() will print an error if enabling
OSI mode fails. To ease debugging PSCI issues print corresponding

Currently, we are using CPU_PM_CPU_IDLE_ENTER_PARAM() for all SBI HSM
suspend types so retentive suspend types are also treated non-retentive
and kernel will do redundant additional work for these states.
The BIT[31] of SBI HSM suspend types allows us to differentiate between
retentive and non-retentive suspend types so we should use this BIT
to call appropriate CPU_PM_CPU_IDLE_ENTER_xyz() macro.
