25d0dc4b95 x86/microcode: Allow only "1" as a late reload trigger value
Microcode gets reloaded late only if "1" is written to the reload file.
However, the code silently treats any other unsigned integer as a
successful write even though no actions are performed to load microcode.

Make the loader more strict to accept only "1" as a trigger value and
return an error otherwise.

a9a5cac225 x86/microcode/intel: Print old and new revision during early boot
Make early loading message match late loading message and print both old
and new revisions.

This is helpful to know what the BIOS loaded revision is before an early
update.

Cache the early BIOS revision before the microcode update and have
print_ucode_info() print both the old and new revision in the same
format as microcode_reload_late().

174f1b909a x86/microcode/intel: Pass the microcode revision to print_ucode_info() directly
print_ucode_info() takes a struct ucode_cpu_info pointer as parameter.
Its sole purpose is to print the microcode revision.

The only available ucode_cpu_info always describes the currently loaded
microcode revision. After a microcode update is successful, this is the
new revision, or on failure it is the original revision.

In preparation for future changes, replace the struct ucode_cpu_info
pointer parameter with a plain integer which contains the revision
number and adjust the call sites accordingly.

No functional change.

c0dd9245aa x86/microcode: Check CPU capabilities after late microcode update correctly
The kernel caches each CPU's feature bits at boot in an x86_capability[]
structure. However, the capabilities in the BSP's copy can be turned off
as a result of certain command line parameters or configuration
restrictions, for example the SGX bit. This can cause a mismatch when
comparing the values before and after the microcode update.

Another example is X86_FEATURE_SRBDS_CTRL which gets added only after
microcode update:

and which proves for a gazillionth time that late loading is a bad bad
idea.

microcode_check() is called after an update to report any previously
cached CPUID bits which might have changed due to the update.

Therefore, store the cached CPU caps before the update and compare them
with the CPU caps after the microcode update has succeeded.

Thus, the comparison is done between the CPUID *hardware* bits before
and after the upgrade instead of using the cached, possibly runtime
modified values in BSP's boot_cpu_data copy.

As a result, false warnings about CPUID bits changes are avoided.

It can happen that - especially during testing - the microcode
blobs of all families are all glued together in the initrd. The
current code doesn't check whether the current container matched
a microcode patch and continues to the next one, which leads to

save_microcode_in_initrd_amd() and not find a proper patch, ofc.

Fix that by moving the out: label up, before the desc->mc check which
jots down the pointer of the matching patch and is used to signal to the
caller that it has found a matching patch in the current container.

be1b670f61 x86/microcode/intel: Do not retry microcode reloading on the APs
The retries in load_ucode_intel_ap() were in place to support systems
with mixed steppings. Mixed steppings are no longer supported and there is
only one microcode image at a time. Any retries will simply reattempt to
apply the same image over and over without making progress.

5b1586ab06 x86/microcode/intel: Do not print microcode revision and processor flags
collect_cpu_info() is used to collect the current microcode revision and
processor flags on every CPU.

It had a weird mechanism to try to mimick a "once" functionality in the
sense that, that information should be issued only when it is differing
from the previous CPU.

However (1):

the new calling sequence started doing that in parallel:

  microcode_init()
  |-> schedule_on_each_cpu(setup_online_cpu)
      |-> collect_cpu_info()

resulting in multiple redundant prints:

  microcode: sig=0x50654, pf=0x80, revision=0x2006e05

However (2):

dumping this here is not that important because the kernel does not
support mixed silicon steppings microcode. Finally!

Besides, there is already a pr_info() in microcode_reload_late() that
shows both the old and new revisions.

What is more, the CPU signature (sig=0x50654) and Processor Flags
(pf=0x80) above aren't that useful to the end user, they are available
via /proc/cpuinfo and they don't change anyway.

Remove the redundant pr_info().

de4eda9de2 use less confusing names for iov_iter direction initializers
READ/WRITE proved to be actively confusing - the meanings are
"data destination, as used with read(2)" and "data source, as
used with write(2)", but people keep interpreting those as
"we read data from it" and "we write data to it", i.e. exactly
the wrong way.

Call them ITER_DEST and ITER_SOURCE - at least that is harder
to misinterpret...

IFS uses test images provided by Intel that can be regarded as firmware.
An IFS test image carries microcode header with an extended signature
table.

Reuse find_matching_signature() for verifying if the test image header
or the extended signature table indicate whether that image is fit to
run on a system.

No functional changes.

2071c0aeda x86/microcode: Simplify init path even more
Get rid of all the IPI-sending functions and their wrappers and use
those which are supposed to be called on each CPU.

Thus:

- microcode_init_cpu() gets called on each CPU on init, applying any new
  microcode that the driver might've found on the filesystem.

- mc_cpu_starting() simply tries to apply cached microcode as this is
  the cpuhp starting callback which gets called on CPU resume too.

Even if the driver init function is a late initcall, there is no
filesystem by then (not even a hdd driver has been loaded yet) so a new
firmware load attempt cannot simply be done.

It is pointless anyway - for that there's late loading if one really
needs it.

b6f86689d5 x86/microcode: Rip out the subsys interface gunk
This is a left-over from the old days when CPU hotplug wasn't as robust
as it is now. Currently, microcode gets loaded early on the CPU init
path and there's no need to attempt to load it again, which that subsys
interface callback is doing.

The only other thing that the subsys interface init path was doing is
adding the

  /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/microcode/

hierarchy.

So add a function which gets called on each CPU after all the necessary
driver setup has happened. Use schedule_on_each_cpu() which can block
because the sysfs creating code does kmem_cache_zalloc() which can block
too and the initial version of this where it did that setup in an IPI
handler of on_each_cpu() can cause a deadlock of the sort:

as the IPI handler runs in IRQ context.

e7ad18d116 x86/microcode/AMD: Apply the patch early on every logical thread
Currently, the patch application logic checks whether the revision
needs to be applied on each logical CPU (SMT thread). Therefore, on SMT
designs where the microcode engine is shared between the two threads,
the application happens only on one of them as that is enough to update
the shared microcode engine.

However, there are microcode patches which do per-thread modification,
see Link tag below.

Therefore, drop the revision check and try applying on each thread. This
is what the BIOS does too so this method is very much tested.

Btw, change only the early paths. On the late loading paths, there's no
point in doing per-thread modification because if is it some case like
in the bugzilla below - removing a CPUID flag - the kernel cannot go and
un-use features it has detected are there early. For that, one should
use early loading anyway.

712f210a45 x86/microcode/AMD: Track patch allocation size explicitly
In preparation for reducing the use of ksize(), record the actual
allocation size for later memcpy(). This avoids copying extra
(uninitialized!) bytes into the patch buffer when the requested
allocation size isn't exactly the size of a kmalloc bucket.
Additionally, fix potential future issues where runtime bounds checking
will notice that the buffer was allocated to a smaller value than
returned by ksize().

c93dc84cbe ("perf/x86: Add a microcode revision check for SNB-PEBS")
checks whether the microcode revision has fixed PEBS issues.

This can happen either:

1. At PEBS init time, where the early microcode has been loaded already

2. During late loading, in the microcode_check() callback.

So remove the unnecessary call in the microcode loader init routine.

d3287fb0d3 x86/microcode/intel: Expose collect_cpu_info_early() for IFS
IFS is a CPU feature that allows a binary blob, similar to microcode,
to be loaded and consumed to perform low level validation of CPU
circuitry. In fact, it carries the same Processor Signature
(family/model/stepping) details that are contained in Intel microcode
blobs.

In support of an IFS driver to trigger loading, validation, and running
of these tests blobs, make the functionality of cpu_signatures_match()
and collect_cpu_info_early() available outside of the microcode driver.

Add an "intel_" prefix and drop the "_early" suffix from
collect_cpu_info_early() and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() it. Add
declaration to x86 <asm/cpu.h>

Make cpu_signatures_match() an inline function in x86 <asm/cpu.h>,
and also give it an "intel_" prefix.

No functional change intended.

updates.

Now that the firmware loader code has exported an API for looping

7189b3c119 x86/microcode: Check for offline CPUs before requesting new microcode
Currently, the late microcode loading mechanism checks whether any CPUs
are offlined, and, in such a case, aborts the load attempt.

However, this must be done before the kernel caches new microcode from
the filesystem. Otherwise, when offlined CPUs are onlined later, those
cores are going to be updated through the CPU hotplug notifier callback
with the new microcode, while CPUs previously onine will continue to run
with the older microcode.

For example:

Turn off one core (2 threads):

  echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/online
  echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online

Install the ucode fails because a primary SMT thread is offline:

synchronization dance or enter SMM, and in both examples it will execute
instructions so it better have the same microcode revision as the other
cores.

1a371e67dc x86/microcode/intel: Check patch signature before saving microcode for early loading
Currently, scan_microcode() leverages microcode_matches() to check
if the microcode matches the CPU by comparing the family and model.
However, the processor stepping and flags of the microcode signature
should also be considered when saving a microcode patch for early
update.

Use find_matching_signature() in scan_microcode() and get rid of the
now-unused microcode_matches() which is a good cleanup in itself.

Complete the verification of the patch being saved for early loading in
save_microcode_patch() directly. This needs to be done there too because
save_mc_for_early() will call save_microcode_patch() too.

The second reason why this needs to be done is because the loader still
tries to support, at least hypothetically, mixed-steppings systems and
thus adds all patches to the cache that belong to the same CPU model
albeit with different steppings.

For example:

c8a59a4d8e x86/microcode: Do not select FW_LOADER
The x86 microcode support works just fine without FW_LOADER. In fact,
these days most people load microcode early during boot so FW_LOADER
never gets into the picture anyway.

As almost everyone on x86 needs to enable MICROCODE, this by extension
means that FW_LOADER is always built into the kernel even if nothing
uses it. The FW_LOADER system is about two thousand lines long and
contains user-space facing interfaces that could potentially provide an
entry point into the kernel (or beyond).

Remove the unnecessary select of FW_LOADER by MICROCODE. People who need
the FW_LOADER capability can still enable it.

9adbf3c609 x86/microcode: Fix return value for microcode late loading
The return value from stop_machine() might not be consistent.

stop_machine_cpuslocked() returns:
- zero if all functions have returned 0.
- a non-zero value if at least one of the functions returned
a non-zero value.

There is no way to know if it is negative or positive. So make
__reload_late() return 0 on success or negative otherwise.

93946a33b5 x86/microcode: Update late microcode in parallel
Microcode update was changed to be serialized due to restrictions after
Spectre days. Updating serially on a large multi-socket system can be
painful since it is being done on one CPU at a time.

Cloud customers have expressed discontent as services disappear for
a prolonged time. The restriction is that only one core (or only one
thread of a core in the case of an SMT system) goes through the update
while other cores (or respectively, SMT threads) are quiesced.

Do the microcode update only on the first thread of each core while
other siblings simply wait for this to complete.

5423f5ce5c x86/microcode: Fix the microcode load on CPU hotplug for real
A recent change moved the microcode loader hotplug callback into the early
startup phase which is running with interrupts disabled. It missed that
the callbacks invoke sysfs functions which might sleep causing nice 'might
sleep' splats with proper debugging enabled.

Split the callbacks and only load the microcode in the early startup phase
and move the sysfs handling back into the later threaded and preemptible
bringup phase where it was before.

The MSR in question is MSR_TFA_RTM_FORCE_ABORT and that MSR is emulated
by microcode. The log above shows that the microcode loader callback
happens after the PMU restoration, leading to the conjecture that
because the microcode hasn't been updated yet, that MSR is not present
yet, leading to the #GP.

Add a microcode loader-specific hotplug vector which comes before
the PERF vectors and thus executes earlier and makes sure the MSR is
present.

("fs: stream_open - opener for stream-like files so that read and write
can run simultaneously without deadlock"), search and convert to
stream_open all in-kernel nonseekable_open users for which read and
write actually do not depend on ppos and where there is no other methods
in file_operations which assume @offset access.

I've verified each generated change manually - that it is correct to convert -
and each other nonseekable_open instance left - that it is either not correct
to convert there, or that it is not converted due to current stream_open.cocci
limitations. The script also does not convert files that should be valid to
convert, but that currently have .llseek = noop_llseek or generic_file_llseek
for unknown reason despite file being opened with nonseekable_open (e.g.
drivers/input/mousedev.c)

Among cases converted 14 were potentially vulnerable to read vs write deadlock
(see details in 10dce8af34):

24613a04ad x86/microcode: Fix the ancient deprecated microcode loading method
Commit

  2613f36ed9 ("x86/microcode: Attempt late loading only when new microcode is present")

added the new define UCODE_NEW to denote that an update should happen
only when newer microcode (than installed on the system) has been found.

But it missed adjusting that for the old /dev/cpu/microcode loading
interface. Fix it.

7e94a7b659 x86/microcode/intel: Refactor Intel microcode blob loading
Change generic_load_microcode() to use the iov_iter API instead of a
clumsy open-coded version which has to pay attention to __user data
or kernel data, depending on the loading method. This allows to avoid
explicit casting between user and kernel pointers.

Because the iov_iter API makes it hard to read the same location twice,
as a side effect, also fix a double-read of the microcode header (which
could e.g. lead to out-of-bounds reads in microcode_sanity_check()).

Not that it matters much, only root is allowed to load microcode
anyway...

912139cfbf x86/microcode/amd: Don't falsely trick the late loading mechanism
The load_microcode_amd() function searches for microcode patches and
attempts to apply a microcode patch if it is of different level than the
currently installed level.

While the processor won't actually load a level that is less than
what is already installed, the logic wrongly returns UCODE_NEW thus
signaling to its caller reload_store() that a late loading should be
attempted.

If the file-system contains an older microcode revision than what is
currently running, such a late microcode reload can result in these
misleading messages:

  x86/CPU: CPU features have changed after loading microcode, but might not take effect.
  x86/CPU: Please consider either early loading through initrd/built-in or a potential BIOS update.

These messages were issued on a system where SME/SEV are not
enabled by the BIOS (MSR C001_0010[23] = 0b) because during boot,
early_detect_mem_encrypt() is called and cleared the SME and SEV
features in this case.

However, after the wrong late load attempt, get_cpu_cap() is called and
reloads the SME and SEV feature bits, resulting in the messages.

Update the microcode level check to not attempt microcode loading if the
current level is greater than(!) and not only equal to the current patch
level.

Patch series "mm: convert totalram_pages, totalhigh_pages and managed
pages to atomic", v5.

This series converts totalram_pages, totalhigh_pages and
zone->managed_pages to atomic variables.

totalram_pages, zone->managed_pages and totalhigh_pages updates are
protected by managed_page_count_lock, but readers never care about it.
Convert these variables to atomic to avoid readers potentially seeing a
store tear.

Main motivation was that managed_page_count_lock handling was complicating
things.  It was discussed in length here,

to remove the lock and convert variables to atomic.  With the change,
preventing poteintial store-to-read tearing comes as a bonus.

This is in preparation to a later patch which converts totalram_pages and

value might lead to a different value and as such it could lead to
unexpected behavior.  There are no known bugs as a result of the current

Currently, the code scanning the CPU equivalence table read from a
microcode container file assumes that it actually contains a terminating
zero entry.

Check also the size of this table to make sure that no reads past its

Add container and patch verification functions to the AMD microcode
update driver.

These functions check whether a passed buffer contains the relevant
structure, whether it isn't truncated and (for actual microcode patches)
whether the size of a patch is not too large for a particular CPU family.
By adding these checks as separate functions the actual microcode loading
code won't get interspersed with a lot of checks and so will be more
readable.

verify_patch_size() verifies whether the remaining size of the microcode
container file is large enough to contain a patch of the indicated size.

However, the section header length is not included in this indicated

subtracted from the leftover file length before passing this value to
verify_patch_size().

Handle the case where microcode gets loaded on the BSP's hyperthread
sibling first and the boot_cpu_data's microcode revision doesn't get
updated because of early exit due to the siblings sharing a microcode

370a132bb2 x86/microcode: Make sure boot_cpu_data.microcode is up-to-date
When preparing an MCE record for logging, boot_cpu_data.microcode is used
to read out the microcode revision on the box.

However, on systems where late microcode update has happened, the microcode
revision output in a MCE log record is wrong because
boot_cpu_data.microcode is not updated when the microcode gets updated.

But, the microcode revision saved in boot_cpu_data's microcode member
should be kept up-to-date, regardless, for consistency.

Make it so.

09e182d17e x86/microcode: Do not exit early from __reload_late()
Vitezslav reported a case where the

  "Timeout during microcode update!"

panic would hit. After a deeper look, it turned out that his .config had
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU disabled which practically made save_mc_for_early() a
no-op.

When that happened, the discovered microcode patch wasn't saved into the
cache and the late loading path wouldn't find any.

This, then, lead to early exit from __reload_late() and thus CPUs waiting
until the timeout is reached, leading to the panic.

In hindsight, that function should have been written so it does not return
before the post-synchronization. Oh well, I know better now...

save_mc_for_early() was a no-op on !CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU but the
generic_load_microcode() path saves the microcode patches it has found into
the cache of patches which is used for late loading too. Regardless of
whether CPU hotplug is used or not.

Make the saving unconditional so that late loading can find the proper
patch.

bb8c13d61a x86/microcode: Fix CPU synchronization routine
Emanuel reported an issue with a hang during microcode update because my
dumb idea to use one atomic synchronization variable for both rendezvous
- before and after update - was simply bollocks:

  microcode: microcode_reload_late: late_cpus: 4
  microcode: __reload_late: cpu 2 entered
  microcode: __reload_late: cpu 1 entered
  microcode: __reload_late: cpu 3 entered
  microcode: __reload_late: cpu 0 entered
  microcode: __reload_late: cpu 1 left
  microcode: Timeout while waiting for CPUs rendezvous, remaining: 1

CPU1 above would finish, leave and the others will still spin waiting for
it to join.

So do two synchronization atomics instead, which makes the code a lot more
straightforward.

Also, since the update is serialized and it also takes quite some time per
microcode engine, increase the exit timeout by the number of CPUs on the
system.

That's ok because the moment all CPUs are done, that timeout will be cut
short.

Furthermore, panic when some of the CPUs timeout when returning from a
microcode update: we can't allow a system with not all cores updated.

Also, as an optimization, do not do the exit sync if microcode wasn't
updated.

Avoid loading microcode if any of the CPUs are offline, and issue a

91df9fdf51 x86/microcode/intel: Writeback and invalidate caches before updating microcode
Updating microcode is less error prone when caches have been flushed and
depending on what exactly the microcode is updating. For example, some
of the issues around certain Broadwell parts can be addressed by doing a
full cache flush.

c182d2b7d0 x86/microcode/intel: Check microcode revision before updating sibling threads
After updating microcode on one of the threads of a core, the other
thread sibling automatically gets the update since the microcode
resources on a hyperthreaded core are shared between the two threads.

Check the microcode revision on the CPU before performing a microcode
update and thus save us the WRMSR 0x79 because it is a particularly
expensive operation.

Currently, x86_cache_size is of type int, which makes no sense as we
will never have a valid cache size equal or less than 0. So instead of

wrong side to resolve, leading to picking up the previous state, before

7e702d17ed x86/microcode/intel: Extend BDW late-loading further with LLC size check
Commit b94b737331 ("x86/microcode/intel: Extend BDW late-loading with a
revision check") reduced the impact of erratum BDF90 for Broadwell model
79.

The impact can be reduced further by checking the size of the last level
cache portion per core.

Tony: "The erratum says the problem only occurs on the large-cache SKUs.
So we only need to avoid the update if we are on a big cache SKU that is
also running old microcode."

b94b737331 x86/microcode/intel: Extend BDW late-loading with a revision check
Instead of blacklisting all model 79 CPUs when attempting a late
microcode loading, limit that only to CPUs with microcode revisions <
0x0b000021 because only on those late loading may cause a system hang.

For such processors either:

a) a BIOS update which might contain a newer microcode revision

or

b) the early microcode loading method

should be considered.

Processors with revisions 0x0b000021 or higher will not experience such
hangs.

     PAGE_PRESENT instead of checking the PTE for 0 and a cleanup of the

1f161f67a2 x86/microcode: Do the family check first
On CPUs like AMD's Geode, for example, we shouldn't even try to load
microcode because they do not support the modern microcode loading
interface.

However, we do the family check *after* the other checks whether the
loader has been disabled on the command line or whether we're running in
a guest.

So move the family checks first in order to exit early if we're being
loaded on an unsupported family.

Avoid potentially dereferencing a NULL pointer when saving a microcode

While at it, drop the IS_ERR() checking in favor of simpler, NULL-ptr

memdup_patch() to more precisely denote what it does.

No functionality change.

bd20733045 x86/microcode/intel: Save pointer to ucode patch for early AP loading
Normally, when the initrd is gone, we can't search it for microcode
blobs to apply anymore. For that we need to stash away the patch in our
own storage.

And save_microcode_in_initrd_intel() looks like the proper place to
do that from. So in order for early loading to work, invalidate the
intel_ucode_patch pointer to the patch *before* scanning the initrd one
last time.

If the scanning code finds a microcode patch, it will assign that
pointer again, this time with our own storage's address.

This way, early microcode application during resume-from-RAM works too,
even after the initrd is long gone.

a3d98c9358 x86/microcode: Look for the initrd at the correct address on 32-bit
Early during boot, the BSP finds the ramdisk's position from boot_params
but by the time the APs get to boot, the BSP has continued in the mean
time and has potentially managed to relocate that ramdisk.

And in that case, the APs need to find the ramdisk at its new position,
in *physical* memory as they're running before paging has been enabled.

Thus, get the updated physical location of the ramdisk which is in the
relocated_ramdisk variable.

5b0bc9ac2c x86/microcode/intel: Clear patch pointer before jettisoning the initrd
During early boot, load_ucode_intel_ap() uses __load_ucode_intel()
to obtain a pointer to the relevant microcode patch (embedded in the
initrd), and stores this value in 'intel_ucode_patch' to speed up the
microcode patch application for subsequent CPUs.

On resuming from suspend-to-RAM, however, load_ucode_ap() calls
load_ucode_intel_ap() for each non-boot-CPU. By then the initramfs is
long gone so the pointer stored in 'intel_ucode_patch' no longer points to
a valid microcode patch.

Clear that pointer so that we effectively fall back to the CPU hotplug
notifier callbacks to update the microcode.

Instead, convert that function parameter to a boolean which denotes
whether the patch should be saved or not, thereby avoiding the use of

69f5f98300 x86/microcode/AMD: Remove AP scanning optimization
The idea was to not scan the microcode blob on each AP (Application
Processor) during boot and thus save us some milliseconds. However, on
architectures where the microcode engine is shared between threads, this
doesn't work. Here's why:

The microcode on CPU0, i.e., the first thread, gets updated. The second
thread, i.e., CPU1, i.e., the first AP walks into load_ucode_amd_ap(),
sees that there's no container cached and goes and scans for the proper
blob.

It finds it and as a last step of apply_microcode_early_amd(), it tries
to apply the patch but that core has already the updated microcode
revision which it has received through CPU0's update. So it returns
false and we do desc->size = -1 to prevent other APs from scanning.

However, the next AP, CPU2, has a different microcode engine which
hasn't been updated yet. The desc->size == -1 test prevents it from
scanning the blob anew and we fail to update it.

The fix is much more straight-forward than it looks: the BSP
(BootStrapping Processor), i.e., CPU0, caches the microcode patch
in amd_ucode_patch. We use that on the AP and try to apply it.
In the 99.9999% of cases where we have homogeneous cores - *not*
mixed-steppings - the application will be successful and we're good to
go.

In the remaining small set of systems, we will simply rescan the blob
and find (or not, if none present) the proper patch and apply it then.

It was pretty clumsy before and the whole work of parsing the microcode
containers was spread around the functions wrongly.

Clean it up so that there's a main scan_containers() function which
iterates over the microcode blob and picks apart the containers glued
together. For each container, it calls a parse_container() helper which
concentrates on one container only: sanity-checking, parsing, counting
microcode patches in there, etc.

It makes much more sense now and it is actually very readable. Oh, and
we luvz a diffstat removing more crap than adding.

stores important info like the matching container and the patch for the
current CPU. Make it static too.

Later patches will use this and thus get rid of a double container

c26665ab5c x86/microcode/intel: Drop stashed AP patch pointer optimization
This was meant to save us the scanning of the microcode containter in
the initrd since the first AP had already done that but it can also hurt
us:

Imagine a single hyperthreaded CPU (Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270, for
example) which updates the microcode on the BSP but since the microcode
engine is shared between the two threads, the update on CPU1 doesn't
happen because it has already happened on CPU0 and we don't find a newer
microcode revision on CPU1.

Which doesn't set the intel_ucode_patch pointer and at initrd
jettisoning time we don't save the microcode patch for later
application.

Now, when we suspend to RAM, the loaded microcode gets cleared so we
need to reload but there's no patch saved in the cache.

Removing the optimization fixes this issue and all is fine and dandy.

2e86222c67 x86/microcode/intel: Use correct buffer size for saving microcode data
In generic_load_microcode(), curr_mc_size is the size of the last
allocated buffer and since we have this performance "optimization"
there to vmalloc a new buffer only when the current one is bigger,
curr_mc_size ends up becoming the size of the biggest buffer we've seen
so far.

However, we end up saving the microcode patch which matches our CPU
and its size is not curr_mc_size but the respective mc_size during the
iteration while we're staring at it.

So save that mc_size into a separate variable and use it to store the
previously found microcode buffer.

Without this fix, we could get oops like this:

f3e2a51f56 x86/microcode: Use native CPUID to tickle out microcode revision
Intel supplies the microcode revision value in MSR 0x8b
(IA32_BIOS_SIGN_ID) after CPUID(1) has been executed. Execute it each
time before reading that MSR.

It used to do sync_core() which did do CPUID but

  c198b121b1 ("x86/asm: Rewrite sync_core() to use IRET-to-self")

changed the sync_core() implementation so we better make the microcode
loading case explicit, as the SDM documents it.

When we switch to virtual addresses and, especially after
reserve_initrd()->relocate_initrd() have run, we have the updated initrd
address in initrd_start. Use initrd_start then instead of the address
which has been passed to us through boot params. (That still gets used
when we're running the very early routines on the BSP).

2b4c91569a x86/microcode/AMD: Use native_cpuid() in load_ucode_amd_bsp()
When CONFIG_PARAVIRT is selected, cpuid() becomes a call. Since
for 32-bit kernels load_ucode_amd_bsp() is executed before paging
is enabled the call cannot be completed (as kernel virtual addresses
are not reachable yet).

Use native_cpuid() instead which is an asm wrapper for the CPUID
instruction.

a15a753539 x86/microcode/AMD: Do not load when running on a hypervisor
Doing so is completely void of sense for multiple reasons so prevent
it. Set dis_ucode_ldr to true and thus disable the microcode loader by
default to address xen pv guests which execute the AP path but not the
BSP path.

By having it turned off by default, the APs won't run into the loader
either.

Also, check CPUID(1).ECX[31] which hypervisors set. Well almost, not the
xen pv one. That one gets the aforementioned "fix".

Also, improve the detection method by caching the final decision whether
to continue loading in dis_ucode_ldr and do it once on the BSP. The APs
then simply test that value.
