arch, mm: set max_mapnr when allocating memory map for FLATMEM
max_mapnr is essentially the size of the memory map for systems that use FLATMEM. There is no reason to calculate it in each and every architecture when it's anyway calculated in alloc_node_mem_map(). Drop setting of max_mapnr from architecture code and set it once in alloc_node_mem_map(). While on it, move definition of mem_map and max_mapnr to mm/mm_init.c so there won't be two copies for MMU and !MMU variants. The various patchsets are summarized below. Plus of course many
indivudual patches which are described in their changelogs. - "Allocate and free frozen pages" from Matthew Wilcox reorganizes the page allocator so we end up with the ability to allocate and free zero-refcount pages. So that callers (ie, slab) can avoid a refcount inc & dec. - "Support large folios for tmpfs" from Baolin Wang teaches tmpfs to use large folios other than PMD-sized ones. - "Fix mm/rodata_test" from Petr Tesarik performs some maintenance and fixes for this small built-in kernel selftest. - "mas_anode_descend() related cleanup" from Wei Yang tidies up part of the mapletree code. - "mm: fix format issues and param types" from Keren Sun implements a few minor code cleanups. - "simplify split calculation" from Wei Yang provides a few fixes and a test for the mapletree code. - "mm/vma: make more mmap logic userland testable" from Lorenzo Stoakes continues the work of moving vma-related code into the (relatively) new mm/vma.c. - "mm/page_alloc: gfp flags cleanups for alloc_contig_*()" from David Hildenbrand cleans up and rationalizes handling of gfp flags in the page allocator. - "readahead: Reintroduce fix for improper RA window sizing" from Jan Kara is a second attempt at fixing a readahead window sizing issue. It should reduce the amount of unnecessary reading. - "synchronously scan and reclaim empty user PTE pages" from Qi Zheng addresses an issue where "huge" amounts of pte pagetables are accumulated (https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/cover.1718267194.git.zhengqi.arch@bytedance.com/). Qi's series addresses this windup by synchronously freeing PTE memory within the context of madvise(MADV_DONTNEED). - "selftest/mm: Remove warnings found by adding compiler flags" from Muhammad Usama Anjum fixes some build warnings in the selftests code when optional compiler warnings are enabled. - "mm: don't use __GFP_HARDWALL when migrating remote pages" from David Hildenbrand tightens the allocator's observance of __GFP_HARDWALL. - "pkeys kselftests improvements" from Kevin Brodsky implements various fixes and cleanups in the MM selftests code, mainly pertaining to the pkeys tests. - "mm/damon: add sample modules" from SeongJae Park enhances DAMON to estimate application working set size. - "memcg/hugetlb: Rework memcg hugetlb charging" from Joshua Hahn provides some cleanups to memcg's hugetlb charging logic. - "mm/swap_cgroup: remove global swap cgroup lock" from Kairui Song removes the global swap cgroup lock. A speedup of 10% for a tmpfs-based kernel build was demonstrated. - "zram: split page type read/write handling" from Sergey Senozhatsky has several fixes and cleaups for zram in the area of zram_write_page(). A watchdog softlockup warning was eliminated. - "move pagetable_*_dtor() to __tlb_remove_table()" from Kevin Brodsky cleans up the pagetable destructor implementations. A rare use-after-free race is fixed. - "mm/debug: introduce and use VM_WARN_ON_VMG()" from Lorenzo Stoakes simplifies and cleans up the debugging code in the VMA merging logic. - "Account page tables at all levels" from Kevin Brodsky cleans up and regularizes the pagetable ctor/dtor handling. mm/memblock: add memblock_alloc_or_panic interface
Before SLUB initialization, various subsystems used memblock_alloc to allocate memory. In most cases, when memory allocation fails, an immediate panic is required. To simplify this behavior and reduce repetitive checks, introduce `memblock_alloc_or_panic`. This function ensures that memory allocation failures result in a panic automatically, improving code readability and consistency across subsystems that require this behavior. [guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com: arch/s390: save_area_alloc default failure behavior changed to panic] Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20250109033136.2845676-1-guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com Link: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/Z2fknmnNtiZbCc7x@kernel.org/ Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20250102072528.650926-1-guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Guo Weikang <guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com> Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> [m68k] Reviewed-by: Alexander Gordeev <agordeev@linux.ibm.com> [s390] Acked-by: Mike Rapoport (Microsoft) <rppt@kernel.org> Cc: Alexander Gordeev <agordeev@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> |

powerpc: Split systemcfg data out of vdso data page
The systemcfg data only has minimal overlap with the vdso data. Splitting the two avoids mapping the implementation-defined vdso data into /proc/ppc64/systemcfg. It is also a preparation for the standardization of vdso data storage. The only field actually used by both systemcfg and vdso is tb_ticks_per_sec and it is only changed once during time_init(). Initialize it in both structures there. powerpc/fadump: Move fadump_cma_init to setup_arch() after initmem_init()
During early init CMA_MIN_ALIGNMENT_BYTES can be PAGE_SIZE,
since pageblock_order is still zero and it gets initialized
later during initmem_init() e.g.
setup_arch() -> initmem_init() -> sparse_init() -> set_pageblock_order()
One such use case where this causes issue is -
early_setup() -> early_init_devtree() -> fadump_reserve_mem() -> fadump_cma_init()
This causes CMA memory alignment check to be bypassed in
cma_init_reserved_mem(). Then later cma_activate_area() can hit
a VM_BUG_ON_PAGE(pfn & ((1 << order) - 1)) if the reserved memory
area was not pageblock_order aligned.
Fix it by moving the fadump_cma_init() after initmem_init(),
where other such cma reservations also gets called.

powerpc/kdump: Split KEXEC_CORE and CRASH_DUMP dependency
Remove CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP dependency on CONFIG_KEXEC. CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE was used at places where CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP or CONFIG_CRASH_RESERVE was appropriate. Replace with appropriate #ifdefs to support CONFIG_KEXEC and !CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP configuration option. powerpc/machdep: Define 'compatibles' property in ppc_md and use it
Most probe functions that do not use the 'compatible' string do nothing else than checking whether the machine is compatible with one of the strings in a NULL terminated table of strings. Define that table of strings in ppc_md structure and check it directly from probe_machine() instead of using ppc_md.probe() for that. Keep checking in ppc_md.probe() only for more complex probing. All .compatible could be replaced with a single element NULL terminated list but that's not worth the churn. Can be do incrementaly in follow-up patches. Now move the relevant codes into separate files: kernel/crash_reserve.c, include/linux/crash_reserve.h. And add config item CRASH_RESERVE to control its enabling. And also update the old ifdeffery of CONFIG_CRASH_CORE, including of <linux/crash_core.h> and config item dependency on CRASH_CORE accordingly. powerpc/smp: Remap boot CPU onto core 0 if >= nr_cpu_ids
If nr_cpu_ids is too low to include the boot CPU, remap the boot CPU onto logical core 0. This is achieved in two stages. In early_init_dt_scan_cpus() the boot CPU is renumbered to be on logical core 0, and the original boot core's hardware ID is recorded. Later in smp_setup_cpu_maps(), if the original boot core ID is set, the logical CPU numbers on the 0th core are skipped in the normal device tree search over CPU device tree nodes. Then the search is continued until the device tree node matching the boot core is found, and those CPUs are assigned the CPU numbers starting at 0. This allows kdump kernels to be booted with low values for nr_cpu_ids to conserve memory, while also allowing the crashing/boot CPU to be any CPU. Tracing updates for v6.7:
- Remove eventfs_file descriptor This is the biggest change, and the second part of making eventfs create its files dynamically. In 6.6 the first part was added, and that maintained a one to one mapping between eventfs meta descriptors and the directories and file inodes and dentries that were dynamically created. The directories were represented by a eventfs_inode and the files were represented by a eventfs_file. In v6.7 the eventfs_file is removed. As all events have the same directory make up (sched_switch has an "enable", "id", "format", etc files), the handing of what files are underneath each leaf eventfs directory is moved back to the tracing subsystem via a callback. When a event is added to the eventfs, it registers an array of evenfs_entry's. These hold the names of the files and the callbacks to call when the file is referenced. The callback gets the name so that the same callback may be used by multiple files. The callback then supplies the filesystem_operations structure needed to create this file. This has brought the memory footprint of creating multiple eventfs instances down by 2 megs each! - User events now has persistent events that are not associated to a single processes. These are privileged events that hang around even if no process is attached to them. - Clean up of seq_buf. There's talk about using seq_buf more to replace strscpy() and friends. But this also requires some minor modifications of seq_buf to be able to do this. - Expand instance ring buffers individually Currently if boot up creates an instance, and a trace event is enabled on that instance, the ring buffer for that instance and the top level ring buffer are expanded (1.4 MB per CPU). This wastes memory as this happens when nothing is using the top level instance. - Other minor clean ups and fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYIADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCZUMrBBQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6quzVAQCed/kPM7X9j2QZamJVDruMf2CmVxpu /TOvKvSKV584GgEAxLntf5VKx1Q98bc68y3Zkg+OCi8jSgORos1ROmURhws= =iIgb -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-v6.7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/trace/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: - Remove eventfs_file descriptor This is the biggest change, and the second part of making eventfs create its files dynamically. powerpc: Explicitly include correct DT includes
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. powerpc/64: Move paca allocation to early_setup()
The early paca and boot cpuid dance is complicated and currently does not quite work as expected for boot cpuid != 0 cases. early_init_devtree() currently allocates the paca_ptrs and boot cpuid paca, but until that returns and early_setup() calls setup_paca(), this thread is currently still executing with smp_processor_id() == 0. One problem this causes is the paca_ptrs[smp_processor_id()] pointer is poisoned, so valid_emergency_stack() (any backtrace) and any similar users will crash. Another is that the hardware id which is set here will not be returned by get_hard_smp_processor_id(smp_processor_id()), but it would work correctly for boot_cpuid == 0, which could lead to difficult to reproduce or find bugs. The hard id does not seem to be used by the rest of early_init_devtree(), it just looks like all this code might have been put here to allocate somewhere to store boot CPU hardware id while scanning the devtree. Rearrange things so the hwid is put in a global variable like boot_cpuid, and do all the paca allocation and boot paca setup in the 64-bit early_setup() after we have everything ready to go. The paca_ptrs[0] re-poisoning code in early_setup does not seem to have ever worked, because paca_ptrs[0] was never not-poisoned when boot_cpuid is not 0. powerpc/setup: Refactor/untangle panic notifiers
The panic notifiers infrastructure is a bit limited in the scope of the callbacks - basically every kind of functionality is dropped in a list that runs in the same point during the kernel panic path. This is not really on par with the complexities and particularities of architecture / hypervisors' needs, and a refactor is ongoing. As part of this refactor, it was observed that powerpc has 2 notifiers, with mixed goals: one is just a KASLR offset dumper, whereas the other aims to hard-disable IRQs (necessary on panic path), warn firmware of the panic event (fadump) and run low-level platform-specific machinery that might stop kernel execution and never come back. Clearly, the 2nd notifier has opposed goals: disable IRQs / fadump should run earlier while low-level platform actions should run late since it might not even return. Hence, this patch decouples the notifiers splitting them in three: - First one is responsible for hard-disable IRQs and fadump, should run early; - The kernel KASLR offset dumper is really an informative notifier, harmless and may run at any moment in the panic path; - The last notifier should run last, since it aims to perform low-level actions for specific platforms, and might never return. It is also only registered for 2 platforms, pseries and ps3. The patch better documents the notifiers and clears the code too, also removing a useless header. Currently no functionality change should be observed, but after the planned panic refactor we should expect more panic reliability with this patch. Signed-off-by: Guilherme G. kernel.h: split out panic and oops helpers
kernel.h is being used as a dump for all kinds of stuff for a long time. Here is the attempt to start cleaning it up by splitting out panic and oops helpers. There are several purposes of doing this: - dropping dependency in bug.h - dropping a loop by moving out panic_notifier.h - unload kernel.h from something which has its own domain At the same time convert users tree-wide to use new headers, although for the time being include new header back to kernel.h to avoid twisted indirected includes for existing users. powerpc: Fix section mismatch warning in smp_setup_pacas()
Section mismatch in reference from the function .smp_setup_pacas() to the function .init.text:.allocate_paca() The only caller of smp_setup_pacas() is setup_arch() which is __init, so mark smp_setup_pacas() __init.
